Introduction
India is the second fastest growing economy in the world today, with extensive progress in all the
sectors. The construction sector in India is essential in the overall economic growth of the country.
Understanding changes in construction productivity, or site output, cannot be achieved without site
information. This information should relate both to the calculation of productivity and to the site
environment in which the productivity has been achieved. Explaining the variability in site data
requires an understanding and quantification of the major factors that affect labour output.
Construction productivity is depending on labour productivity. Labour productivity is a major part of
project scheduling and project duration.
Need of the study
Project planning requires labour productivity constant, and it is different for every region. For
Ahmedabad region, to derive labour constant is required. It will help in project planning, labour
requirement.
Objective of study
The main objective of this thesis is to analyze construction labour productivity considering influential
factors in individual situations. The primary purpose of this thesis is to analyze productivity of labour
coming from different parts of India and their work expertise. An attempt would be made to enable
project planning processes selecting appropriate construction labour teams for different activities
considering their expertise and productivity to achieve quality and cost objectives of the project.
Scope of study
The study covers framed structure building constructions in and around Ahmedabad. Site labour
productivity was investigated for major four activities Concreting, Reinforcement, Formwork and
Brickwork for framed structure buildings.
Parameters to be analyzed ‐
Labour characteristics (Origin, Age, Experience, Training, Wages)
Activity characteristics (Tools, Pre construction preparations, Quality requirements)
Site characteristics (Labour colony, Safety, Water/electricity, Quality control)
Methodology
Literature Review: Literature review will be done from the following:
a. Textbooks

Data Collection: Data will be collected through case studies identified where different region
labours are working. Work and productivity measured in formats.
Data Analysis: Analysis will focus on deriving labour constant for different activities in
Ahmedabad region and also focus on which region labour is suitable for particular activity.
Conclusion & Recommendation: After analysis of labour productivity at the areas under study,
the constants drawn from it will be presented.
Preparation of Thesis Document: Thesis report will be generated as per academic
requirements of CEPT University.
