Target Audience
ACLS Provider and Renewal Courses are designed for healthcare providers who either direct or
participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of hospital.
PALS Provider and Renewal Courses are designed for healthcare providers who initiate and
direct advanced life support beyond basic life support through the stabilization or transport
phases of a pediatric emergency, either in or out of hospital.
Objectives
After participating in the ACLS Provider or Renewal Course, participants should be able to:
• Recognize and initiate early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in
cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
• Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest
compressions and integrating AED use
• Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), termination of
resuscitation, or transfer of care
• Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the care of patients with acute
coronary syndromes
• Recognize other life-threatening clinical situations, such as stroke, and provide effective
initial car and transfer to reduce disability and death
• Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and
recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
After participating in the PALS Provider or Renewal Course, participants should be able to:
• Discuss the “assess-categorize-decide-act” approach
• Explain the purpose and components of the general assessment (pediatric assessment
triangle)
• Summarize the ABCDE components of the primary assessment
• Explain the implications of clinical findings during the general and primary assessments
• Evaluate respiratory or circulatory problems using the BCDE model
• Categorize the clinical condition of a seriously ill or injured child by type and severity
• Summarize the life-saving interventions you should institute if a life-threatening
condition is identified
• Recall the components of the secondary and tertiary assessments

Evaluation
Performing a post-course evaluation is part of the accreditation requirements that permit
Vanderbilt to offer CME credit for physicians. Evaluation also provides planners of this course
with information about how to improve future sessions.
Issuance of credit
a. To obtain credit for your participation, complete the Vanderbilt CME Documentation of
Attendance form.
c. You will receive email notification of online credit availability 1-2 weeks after data is submitted
to Vanderbilt CME.
d. You may access your record of participation at anytime by visiting the Division of CME web-site
at www.cme.vanderbilt.edu and following the instructions to obtain a transcript.
