Course Information
 Course Title: Introduction to Hospitality & Resort Tourism Management (HRTM 101), 3 hours.
 Catalog Description: Provide an introduction to various careers in the hospitality and
tourism industry in the context of resort destination areas. Through both classroom
lectures and off-campus industry site visits students are introduced to internship and
career opportunities in hospitality and tourism industry in the context of resort areas.
 Prerequisites: None

Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes


Course Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to expose the students to the breadth
of the hospitality industry including Tourism, Lodging, Restaurants, Managed Services,
Recreation, Attractions and Event Management. Students will be immersed (both in-person and
electronically) in the hospitality industry to illustrate the inter-relatedness of the components
within the broader industry.

Student Learning Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Identify multiple career paths available in the hospitality and tourism industry in a
resort destination area.
2. Develop and expand on a network of personal business contacts with hospitality-
related organizations.
3. Describe how basic theory in functional business disciplines is applied in multiple
segments of the hospitality and tourism industry (Travel, Lodging, Restaurants,
Recreation and Amusements, Managed Services and Events/Events Management).
4. Describe the functional responsibilities of various service roles in the hospitality
industry.

Course Readings and Technological Support


 Required Text: Walker, John E. (2017), Introduction to Hospitality Management (5 th Edition),
Pearson.
 Other Materials: A review of Hospitality-related current events will further enhance
students learning and expand upon text coverage of course material.
 MOODLE: A Moodle site has been created, including instructional material for each
chapter. And, there are Quizzes to be completed for each chapter.

The CCU Catalog and Student Handbook will serve as the standard for evaluating student
behaviors and actions. Students are encouraged to interact with their classmates. However, this
collaboration has its limits, as students must submit individual work for grading.

Assessments and Evaluations


The graded work for this course will consist of the following components:
1. We will have a Syllabus Quiz delivered in MOODLE.
2. We will have a 15 question Per Chapter Quiz administered in MOODLE.
3. We will have 5 Apply Your Knowledge Assignments throughout the semester on current
events/research.
4. We will have a Group Project and Presentation.
5. We will have a Final Exam.
6. We will have 2 Field Trips, In-class Assignments and Discussions.
7. We will have a strict class attendance and participation component.
8. Due dates have been established, NO Late Submissions allowed.

Grading Policy and Procedures


As noted above, we will have 6 graded components to your Introduction to Resort Tourism
Management course: (1) Complete an online quiz regarding the contents of the syllabus, (2)
Complete 13 chapter quizzes by their assigned Check Point dates; (3) Complete 5 Apply Your
Knowledge assignments, (4) Complete a Group Project and Presentation; (5) Participate in class
discussions and class field trips; (6) Complete in-class assignments; and (7) Attend class regularly
to earn the attendance points.

Policies and Procedures


A. Instructor’s Expectations for Students – Students will commit to the timely completion of all
work assignments. Students will act professionally in all interaction with their student peers
and instructors. Students will abide by the Coastal Carolina University Statement of

B. What Students Can Expect From the Instructor – Instructor will commit to the timely
response to all student inquiries. Instructor will commit to facilitate student learning of the
subject matter. Instructor will abide by the Coastal Carolina University Statement of
Community Expectations presented elsewhere.
C. Communication Policy – Email (rharvey@coastal.edu) will be the primary communication
tool supporting the delivery of this course. Instructor will attempt to respond to all inquiries
(barring unforeseen circumstances) within 24 hours Monday thru Friday. For weekend
inquires, the instructor will respond to all inquiries by the end of Monday. Technical support
will be provided by the Student Computing Services.
D. Contingency Instruction - In the event of hazardous weather, faculty, staff, and students are
requested to listen to local radio and television stations or visit the Coastal Carolina
University website for official University closing announcements. Announcements about
hazardous weather are also posted on the University’s homepage. If class is cancelled,
instructor will post information for assignments in Moodle.

H. Attendance / Participation – Effective teaching is a joint responsibility of the student and

engagement will return in missed points earned in assignments and discussion questions.
I. Make-up Work Policy – Our deadlines have been established. We will deviate from the plan
only under extreme circumstances.
J. Late Assignments – Punctuality is a skill or ability demanded by employer’s fast-paced
marketplace. We seek to develop this commitment to on-time performance here at Coastal
Carolina University. Students enrolled in HRTM 101 must accept this commitment to on-
time performance of all assigned materials.
