1. Introduction
General System Overview
The basic function of the full Shut-In Tool is to open and close a valve.
A Shut-In Tool (SIT) can be programmed to open and close the valve
at user determined intervals.
To program an SIT for operation requires the use of a computer. The
tool is connected to the computer serial port using an SIT Program
Interface Box. The user communicates with the tool through the use of
software designed by Spartek Systems called Shut-In Tool.
The tool records elapsed time, battery voltage, and tool current data in
an internal memory. The tool will begin recording data and start the
open/close program sequence as soon as a lithium battery pack is
connected.

The SS3100 2.375” Valve Section

This manual is for servicing of the SS3100 2.375” SIT Valve Section.
The Valve Section is available in two materials: 17-4 Stainless Steel for
Sweet applications and 718 Inconel for Sour applications.
The sealing components are different for different types of applications.
They are offered in three material types to accommodate the presence
and quantity of H2S. Maintenance procedures for the two types of
valves are the same.
The SIT Valve Section is designed to be used in conjunction with an
SS3100 2.375” SIT Drive Section. Note: The diameter of these
products is based on the measurements of the tubing in which they fit.
The dimensions are not the dimensions of the products themselves.
The complete tool requires a minimum of 10.5V to operate which can
be provided by a 3 “C” cell battery pack or a 3 “CC” cell pack.
The overall diameter of the 2.375” Valve Section is 1.75” (44.45 mm).
The overall length of the 2.375” Valve Section is 11.775” (299.085
mm).
This valve can withstand pressures up to 15 000 psi and temperatures
of 150°C although the temperature rating of a full string is dependant
on the motor of the Drive Section which can be rated to 150°C (302ºF).
The maximum differential pressure between the tubing and the
formation is 10 000 psi.

3. Maintenance Manual Overview

The following instructions show and explain the sequence of steps
necessary to maintain, service, and prepare the 2.375” Shut-In Tool
Valve Section. It is highly recommended that the following
instructions be read completely and thoroughly prior to
disassembling, assembling, and operating the Shut-in Tool (SIT).
The SIT Valve Section will require a complete redress of the
components described in this manual after each field test.

Structure
The composition of this manual consists of five major activities:
disassembly, seal removal, seal placement, lubrication, and
assembly. These processes are arranged into two main headings:
Disassembly and Assembly.

Due to the nature of the tool, seal removal is included under the
disassembly procedure and seal replacement and lubrication are
included under the assembly procedure. The manual is written in a
manner that explains the disassembly procedure then the
reassembly procedure, so that the user begins and ends with a fully
assembled valve. Figure 2 shows a fully assembled valve.

Figure 2 – A Fully Assembled Valve Section

Components
The Valve Section is made up of eight major components. Figure 3
below shows the general layout of the Valve Section and the chart
below contains the names of each of the components.

Item Description Item Description

1 Bearing Housing Adapter 5 Lock Mandrel Adapter
2 Translation Shaft 6 Valve End Piece
3 Valve Housing Shaft Adapter 7 Valve Middle Piece
4 Valve Housing 8 Valve Front Piece

4. Disassembly Procedure
The Valve will be in one of two states when the decision is made to
disassemble and redress the Valve; it will either be connected to the
Drive Section or it will not be connected to the Drive Section.
If the situation is the latter, the first step can be omitted.

4.1. Removing the Valve Section from the Drive Section

Setup
The process for removing the Valve Section from the Drive Section
requires the Valve to move. For this reason it is of utmost
importance that the valve is in the middle position when it is to be
removed, to prevent damage. The Valve is in the middle position
when the black seal is visible through the flow holes, shown in Figure
4.

Figure 4 – Valve in the Middle Position

________________________________________________________________________
Model SS3100 Shut-In Tool 2.375” Valve Section Page 8/49
Ensure that the Valve is in the middle
position when removing it from the Drive
Section to avoid damaging the Motor.
To move the Valve into the middle position, connect the Drive
Section to a computer using an SS1005 SIT Program Interface Box
and use Spartek Systems Shut-In software to move the valve. Use
the Open, Close, and Stop commands of the software.

Procedure
Removal of the Valve Section from the Drive Section requires the use
of a 1.25" to 3" spanner wrench and a 1.625” pump wrench. Both of
these components are included in the Kit Assembly.
Place the pump wrench on the wrench flats of the Drive Section and
the spanner wrench in the appropriate holes on the Valve as shown
in Figure 5.

Figure 5 – Removal of the Valve Section from the Drive Section

Once the Valve is separated, the next step is to establish the type of
Drive Section and Valve Section and their component compatibility.

5. Component Compatibility
Once the Valve is removed, there is an opportunity to determine the
characteristics of both the Valve and Drive sections. These
characteristics are important with regards to component compatibility.

Drive Sections
There are currently two brands of Drive Sections in circulation: a
Zed I type and a Spartek Systems (SPS) type both rated to 150°C.

________________________________________________________________________
Model SS3100 Shut-In Tool 2.375” Valve Section Page 9/49
The temperature rating of the Drive Section corresponds to the rating
of the Motor. The Zed I Drive Section can accommodate the 150°C
Motor and the SPS Drive Section can accommodate 150°C Motor as
well.
Drive Section Temperature Rating
Zed I 150°C
SPS 150°C

Valve Sections
Once a particular Drive Section is fitted with a particular Motor,
specific mating components for a Valve Section are required due to
the different shapes of the two Motors. The Bearing Housing Adapter
and the Translation Shaft are the two dependent components that will
require consideration when mating to a given Drive Section.

Bearing Housing Adapters

There are currently two Bearing Housing Adapters in circulation: The
extended design, and the current design.
The current design is the shorter of the two and it is compatible with
150°C Motors.
The extended design has a longer overall length than the other
Bearing Housing Adapter. This makes it compatible with only the
165°C Motor which is not available now.
The two Bearing Housing Adapter types are shown in Figure 6.

________________________________________________________________________
Model SS3100 Shut-In Tool 2.375” Valve Section Page 10/49
Figure 6 – Original and Current Bearing Housing Adapters

Translation Shafts
Currently there are two different Translation Shafts in circulation, one
compatible with only the 165°C Motor and one of which is compatible
with both the 150°C and 165°C Motors.
The longer Translation Shaft is to be used with the extended Bearing
Housing Adapter and is thus rated to 165°C only and not available
now.
The shorter version is to be used with the current Bearing Housing
Adapter only, but since the current Bearing Housing Adapter can be
used with both motor types, the shorter shaft will also work with both
motors.

Figure 7 – The Two Styles of Translation Shafts

The images above show the Sweet versions of the Translation Shaft,
hence their bronze appearance. Sour versions will look silver.
Now that compatibility issues have been addressed, the disassembly
procedure can begin.

6. Seal Removal: O-Rings and Back-Up Rings
6.1. Seal Removal Procedure
Seal removal will occur numerous times throughout the disassembly
procedure. In fact, many of the seals are identical to those on the
Bearing Housing at the end of the valve. Use the following example
of the seal removal procedure for all seal removal requirements
unless otherwise indicated.
The seal removal procedure is the same for both sweet and sour
applications. The low-cost of seals makes single use a practical and
economical alternative to reusing seals.
Spartek Systems recommends the use of new seals for every job.

6.2. Bearing Housing Seal Removal

The Bearing Housing seals are located at the top of the valve on the
end of the Bearing Housing Adapter. This procedure is easiest if the
Teflon Back-Up Rings are removed first.

Take care not to damage the O-Ring

seats during this procedure.
Back-Up Ring Removal
Locate the split in the Teflon Back-Up Rings and spread the Back-Up
Ring apart with both thumbs. Twist it off as shown in Figure 7.

Figure 7 – Back-Up Ring Removal

O-Ring Removal
Use the O-Ring Removal Tool to gently lift up the O-Ring to provide
enough room to slide the cutters underneath. Cut the O-Ring as
shown in Steps 3 and 4 of Figure 8.

Figure 8 – O-Ring Removal

6.3. Removing the Bearing Housing and the Lock Mandrel
To begin, use a 1.25" to 3" and a 2” to 4.75” spanner wrench to
remove first the Bearing Housing Adapter at the top end of the valve,
and the Lock Mandrel at the bottom end.
Under the Bearing Housing is a bearing ring placed in between two
washers. The grease on these components may cause them to stick
to the inside of the housing or they may stick to the top of the
Translation Shaft. If they are stuck inside the housing, use the
O-Ring removal tool to poke or pry them out. In either case, be
certain that all three components are accounted for.

Figure 9 – Bearing Housing and Lock Mandrel Removal Procedure

There is an internal O-Ring on the Bearing Housing to be removed.

With the Bearing Housing and the Lock Mandrel removed, the tool
will look like the image in Figure 11.

Figure 11 – Bearing Housing and Lock Mandrel Removed

The O-Rings and Back-Up Rings on the Valve Housing and the Lock
Mandrel can be removed in the exact same manner as those on the
Bearing Housing. This procedure is explained in Section 5.2.1.

6.4. Removing the Translation Shaft

Insert a slotted screwdriver into the Translation Shaft and turn it
counterclockwise for removal as shown in Figure 12.

6.5. Removing the Valve Housing Shaft Adapter
Types of Shaft Adapters
There are currently two types of Shaft Adapters in circulation:
Revision A and Revision B. The most noteworthy difference between
the two types is the seals, shown in Figure 15.

Revision A Revision B
Figure 15 – Types of Shaft Adapters

Notice that Revision A does not have external seals. Revision B is

the current version and also the most common.
It should be noted that tools using Revision A Adapters will also
require Revision A Valve Housings. These housings have internal
seals to make up for the absence of external seals on the Adapter.
Shaft Adapter and Valve Housing components are not
interchangeable, so be certain to note which version is used in
the event that either of the components require replacement.

Removal Procedure
The adapter removal procedure is the same for both types, but the
seal removal procedure is different due to the lack of external seals
on Revision A Adapters. Omit the external seal removal steps for
Revision A Adapters.
Use a 1.25” to 3” spanner wrench and a 0.75” to 2” spanner wrench
to remove the Shaft Adapter as shown is Step 1 of Figure 16. Once
removed, use the seal extraction tool, shown in Step 3, to remove the
internal seal of either type of adapter.
Use the O-Ring removal tool to remove the face seal on either type of
adapter and to remove the external O-Rings on Revision B Shaft
Adapters. This procedure is shown in Figures 16 and 17.

6.6. Removing the Inner Valve

Use the valve extraction tool to remove the Inner Valve. Hand
tighten the valve extraction tool onto the Valve Housing. Using either
a crescent wrench or a power drill, turn the shaft clockwise, to move
the valve into the closed position.
The shaft of the extraction tool acts like the Translation Shaft and
moves the Inner Valve. The difference being that the translation
shaft is threaded onto the valve to move it up or down whereas the
extraction tool does not thread onto the valve it just pushes it out.
When the extraction tool is in place, the shaft will extend outward
from the top of the tool as shown in Step 3 of Figure 19. Once it is
rotated, the shaft will extend internally, and push out the Inner Valve.
In Step 4, the Inner Valve is visible at the bottom of the Valve
Housing.

Figure 19 – Removing the Valve using the Valve Extraction Tool

The Inner Valve will fall out when it is pushed out using the extraction
tool.

Be careful not to let the Inner Valve drop out of the
housing.
With the valve removed, the tool will look like the image in Figure 20.

Figure 20 – Inner Valve Removed From the Valve Housing

6.7. Disassembling the Inner Valve

Filter Removal
Three components make up the Inner Valve: the Front, Middle and
Bottom. Inside the valve are several filtering mechanisms. The first
step is to remove these filters.
To begin, remove the filter set screw that holds all of the filters in
place. Removal of the set screw requires the use of a 5/16” (0.3125”)
Allan Key. The filters should fall out if the valve is turned upside
down. See Figure 21.

Use a 0.75” to 2” spanner wrench and the T-Bar tool to remove the
Valve Front Piece. Fit the T-Bar Tool into the slot of the Front Piece
as shown in Step 2 of Figure 22.

Figure 22 – Valve Front Piece Removal

Remove the Teflon cap by hand or use the O-Ring removal tool to
pry the Cap off to avoid damaging the surface of the Front piece.
There are two O-Rings inside each Teflon cap. These do not need to
be removed since both the O-Rings and the Teflon cap are single
use items and new caps and new O-Rings will be used for assembly.

Valve Middle Piece Removal

Use a 0.75” to 2” spanner wrench and a slotted screwdriver to
remove the Valve Middle Piece as shown in Figure 23.

________________________________________________________________________

Figure 23 - Valve Middle Piece Removal

Use the O-Ring removal tool to remove the O-Rings on the interior of
both the Valve Middle Piece and the Valve End Piece to avoid
damaging the seats.
The Teflon cap on the Valve Middle Piece can be discarded as well.
The set screw at the bottom of the Valve Front Piece can remain in
place.
The valve is now completely disassembled.
Reassembly requires replacement of all of the seals and lubrication
of those seals. The assembly procedure explains these activities in a
step by step format as components are put together.
Before beginning the assembly procedure, the seal components and
the seal configurations and will be listed.

Some of the O-Ring and Back-Up Ring seals for the SS3100 Valve
Section are available in multiple materials in order to accommodate
the different environments the tool may encounter. See Section 11
for more information.
These parts are available for purchase from Spartek Systems either
as individual items or in Redress Kits. See Section 11.2 for more
information on Redress Kits and also for Item Numbers of these
products.
The next section details the seal configuration used on this tool.

7.2. Seal Configurations

There are multiple seal configurations used on the 3.5” Valve
Section. The seal configuration is determined by the combinations of
seals used and their positions. Both sweet and sour tools use the
same arrangements for all joints.

________________________________________________________________________
Model SS3100 Shut-In Tool 2.375” Valve Section Page 23/49
Standard Seal Configuration
This arrangement consists of two O-Rings and two Back-Up Rings in
an alternating formation with the Back-Up Ring positioned closest to
the threads. This image is shown in Figure 24, using the Bearing
Housing as an example.

Figure 24 – Standard Seal Configuration

This configuration is used on the Bearing Housing (external), the

Lock Mandrel Adapter, and the Valve Housing seals. The Lock
Mandrel Adapter and the Valve Housing seals are not shown,
however the arrangement is exactly the same.

Simple Seal Configuration

The Simple Seal arrangement consists of an O-Ring without any
Back-Up Rings. This configuration is used on the Bearing Housing
(internal). See Figure 25.

Figure 25 – Simple Seal Configuration on the Bearing Housing

Double Simple Seal Configuration

Two Simple Seals combine to form a Double Simple Seal. This
configuration is used on two components of the Inner Valve: the
Middle Piece and the End Piece. See Figure 26.

The Valve Housing Shaft Adapter also uses the Single Seal
Configuration, except this time the Back-Up is closest to the threads,
shown in Figure 30.

Figure 30 – Standard Seal Configuration

Other Valve Shaft Adapter Seals

The Valve Housing Shaft Adapter has two other seals: a Face Seal
and an Internal Seal. Neither of these components have a specific
orientation; instead it is their location and design that are noteworthy.
The Face Seal is a white circle with a spring-like coil inside. The
Internal Seal is two O-Rings placed inside a cylindrical holder with a
spring. The internal seal is replaced as one piece. See Figure 31.

8. Grease and Lubrication
When installing the seals, it is necessary to clean any residue leftover
from seal removal and to lubricate the sealing area once new seals
are installed. This will prevent damage when restoring the
components. To do this, the use of two products is required.
A fast evaporating industrial degreaser is used for cleaning off seal
surfaces and high temperature/high pressure petroleum grease is to
be used to lubricate O-Ring and Back-Up surfaces.
Spartek Systems recommends ZEP ID Red industrial degreaser and
EP (Extreme Pressure) Grease for thread lubrication. These
products are both available for purchase from Spartek Systems.
Transmission fluid is the other aforementioned lubrication solution
used when redressing the valve. This acts as an inhibitor, minimizing
contact between the well fluid and the inner parts of the valve.
The chart below shows the Spartek Item Numbers for the products
mentioned above, as well as the Item Numbers for the tools
recommended for product application.
Item Quantity Part Number
ZEP ID Red Industrial Degreaser 650mL (22oz) 10001028

8.1. Safety Equipment for Greasing and Lubrication
For all of the following procedures, it is recommended that a lab coat,
safety glasses, and gloves be worn. Steel toed boots are also
recommended for protection in the event that a valve component is
dropped.
For the seal cleaning procedure, it is also recommended that this
activity be done in a well ventilated area.

8.2. Grease and Lubrication Procedure

This section gives a brief overview of the grease and lubrication
procedure. Since the greasing procedure for all of the seals cannot
be done as one step due to the nature of valve assembly, the
greasing procedure is incorporated as part of the larger Assembly
procedure.
Seals are placed on and pieces are greased as they are assembled.
There are numerous visual aides depicting the greasing procedure in
the Assembly Section (Section 8).

Cleaning
Clean the surfaces after the seals have been removed. Use ID Red
or another fast evaporating industrial degreaser to clean seal
surfaces.

Greasing
Apply Blue EP Grease to the seals using a soft bristle brush. Do not
over grease. Too much grease will attract debris that can potentially
damage the seal and cause flooding. A perfectly greased O-Ring will
look moist and shiny.

Transmission Fluid
This product is applied during the final step of the assembly
procedure. Only about 2 oz (60mL) is used per valve.
This product may leak out during application and storage of the
valve. Store the valve in the closed position to minimize leakage.
See Section 8.7 for more information on application of this product.
Any type of transmission fluid can be used for this procedure.
Spartek Systems uses Dextron ATF Transmission Fluid when valves
are shipped to a customer.
Once the tool has been disassembled and reassembled, however, the
type of transmission fluid used for the next application is variable.

9. Assembly Procedure
The Assembly Procedure is the reverse of the Disassembly procedure.
Before beginning, ensure that all of the seals have been removed.

9.1. Assembling the Inner Valve

This step includes replacing the seals on the Teflon Caps, the Valve
Front Piece, Valve Middle Piece, and the Valve End Piece before
assembling these components together to make a full inner valve. See
Figure 33.

Figure 33 – Assembling the Inner Valve

Seal Preparation and Lubrication

Begin by inserting the O-Rings inside the Teflon Caps. There are 4 O-
Rings and two caps; two O-Rings per cap. Note: Teflon Caps from a
Redress Kit may already have the O-Rings in place.
Once the O-Rings are in place, grease can be applied. Repeat this
procedure for both Teflon Caps. See Figure 34.

Figure 34 – Teflon Cap O-Ring Insertion and Greasing

Next, replace the O-Rings on the Valve Middle Piece and the Valve
End Piece. A total of 4 O-Rings are used for this step. See Figure 35.

the Valve in the Housing and press the valve in place. Use the
T-Bar tool to help align the Valve.

Figure 42 – Inserting the Valve into the Valve Housing

The valve is now inside the housing but nothing is holding it in place.
The Translation Shaft will keep the valve in place, but first the Valve
Housing Shaft Adapter must be installed.

9.3. Installing the Valve Housing Shaft Adapter

Types of Valve Housings and Shaft Adapters
As explained in the Disassembly Procedure, there are two types of
Shaft Adapters and two types of Valve Housings: Revision A and
Revision B.
For Revision A Shaft Adapters and Revision A Valve Housings, use
one 2-022 O-Ring for the internal seal on the Revision A Valve
Housing. This is the same size of O-Ring that would normally go on
a Revision B Shaft Adapter so it is already included in a Redress Kit.
See Section 11.2 for more on Redress Kits.
This procedure will be demonstrated using a Revision B Shaft
Adapter and a Revision B Valve Housing.

9.5. Valve Housing Seal Installation
The next step is to install the seals on the Valve Housing. These
seals are the same as those on the Bearing Housing and the Mandrel
Adapter. The seals on all of these components can be placed on at
this time. It is easiest to place the O-Rings first.

O-Rings
Carefully slide an O-Ring over the threads of the Valve Housing.
Pinch the O-Ring between the thumb and index finger to create a
bulge in the O-Ring as shown in Steps 2 and 4 of Figure 49. Pull the
bulge down over the seal lip and place it into position using the seal
configuration explained in Section 6.2.

Be sure to put the seals in the

correct seal configuration.

Figure 49 – Valve Housing O-Ring Installation

Back-Up Rings
Teflon is a very malleable material. This being the case, it can easily
become disfigured or stretched. Before replacing a Back-Up Ring,
bend it into the desired shape as shown in Step 1 of Figure 50. Then
slide it over the threads and into position to help it retain its shape as
shown in Steps 3 and 4. Do not spread the Back-Up apart at the split
for installation or it will protrude when it is in place.

9.6. Installing the Bearing Housing

The next step is to install the Bearing Housing and the Mandrel
Adapter as shown in Figure 52.

Figure 52 – Installing the Bearing Housing and the Mandrel Adapter

Seal Preparation and Lubrication

With the seals installed, the next step is to grease the seals on the
Valve Housing. Place the second stack of a bearing ring and two
washers
on the end of the Translation Shaft as shown in Step 2 of Figure 53.

Figure 54 – Tightening the Bearing Housing and Mandrel Adapter
The tool should look like the image in Figure 55. The only remaining
step is to fill the valve with transmission fluid, insert the filters, and seal
the tool.
Open and close the Valve once before filling the cavity with fluid
in order to lubricate the valve.

Figure 55 – Assembled Valve

9.7. Transmission Fluid Application and Filter Placement

The transmission fluid ensures that the valve stays lubricated for the
period before the tool is deployed. Filters are used to keep this fluid
clean. These filters are placed in the order shown in Figure 56.

Figure 56 – Filter Placement

Closing the Valve

To begin, close the valve to prevent fluid from leaking out of the flow
holes. Using the slotted screwdriver, turn the Translation Shaft
________________________________________________________________________
Model SS3100 Shut-In Tool 2.375” Valve Section Page 41/49
counterclockwise and close the valve. A fully closed valve will look
like the image in Figure 57.

Figure 57 – Valve in the Fully Closed Position

Applying Transmission Fluid and Placing the Filters

Stand the valve on its end and pour approximately 2 oz. (60mL) of
fluid into the hole in the bottom of the valve. Pour enough fluid so it
will be able to cover the Filter Set Screw. See Steps 1 and 2 of
Figure 58.
Put the filters inside the tiny hole in the bottom. Insert the filters in
the following order: Sintered Filter - with the hole facing downward
(1), Mesh Filter (3), Washer (1), Spring (1). Once all of the filters are
in place, insert the Filter Set Screw with the smaller end first as
shown in Step 7 of Figure 59. Use the 5/16” (0.3125”) Allan Key to
tighten the Set Screw.

H2S Content
H2S or hydrogen sulphide is an extremely destructive sour gas that
breaks down the seals of downhole tools. Some materials are more
resistant to H2S than others, so to better understand the correct O-
Ring for a specific application will require some information regarding
seal tolerances to H2S.
Seals experience stress due to heat, pressure and the presence of H2S.

Viton CANNOT withstand any H2S content but AFLAS, Chemraz

and Teflon can. These seals can withstand a higher
concentration of H2S at low temperatures but only a very low
amount of H2S at high temperatures.

The Valve Section can be sealed using either Viton (for sweet
applications) or AFLAS (for sour applications). The durable and
economical Teflon Back-Up Ring is used for both applications.
These seal components are available in prepackaged Redress Kits
or as individual parts.

11.2. Redress Kits

The SS3100 2.375” Valve Maintenance Kit is available in three
packages to accommodate any field application. Parts inside
each Kit can be ordered individually, or as a complete Redress Kit
package from Spartek Systems and replaced in the field if
necessary. Packages are differentiated based on the content of
H2S at specific temperatures.
• Sweet 0% H2S content at any temperature
• Medium Sour <7% @ >149°C or <20% @ <149°C H2S
• Sour >7% @ >149°C or >20% @ <149°C H2S

Each of the Redress Kits contains a piece of wax string to aid in

seal replacement.
