Acetaldehyde
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION APPLICATIONS
Acetaldehyde, produced by catalytic oxidation from Acetaldehyde is an important precursor product
ethylene, is a readily flammable, clear, colorless liquid with for purposes including the commercial-scale
a pungent odor. Acetaldehyde is miscible in any ratio with manufacture of acetic acid, ethanol, acetic anhydride,
water and the usual organic solvents. In the presence of peracetic acid, ethyl acetate, glyoxal, crotonaldehyde,
air or oxygen, acetaldehyde tends to form peroxide and maleic acid, pentaerythritol, mono-, di- and
oxidizes to acetic acid. In the presence of mineral acids trichloroacetyl chloride and pyridine bases. It is also
(traces) it tends to polymerize and, in the presence used as an intermediate in the synthesis of dyes,
of alkalis, it is inclined to condense or resinify. pharmaceuticals, perfumes and pesticides.
