A tradition since 1939 ...
The 2010 Red Flannel Queen, Tinsley
Nulph and her Court, Kayla Ovokitys and
Samantha McGahan were selected from 10
wonderful candidates at the scholarship
pageant. The Pageant, held at the historic
Kent Theatre in downtown Cedar Springs,
was sold out. What a fantastic showcase of
the young women in Cedar Springs, all vying
for the thousands of dollars in scholarship
monies awarded. More than $60,000 has
been awarded in the past 20 years with the
scholarship program created by Patricia Ca-
pek and Dorothy Bishop.
Local American Idol talent, Jake Mel-
lema performed with the 2009 Red Flannel
Queen, Jenna Johnson, and Dancing Plus
provided a very talented dancing duo, Zack
Carlstrom and Olivia Esquivel.
Pageant Directors, Sheila Patterson and
Patsy Baar, created an elegant evening and
Dr. Dave Weinandy, communications pro-
fessor at Aquinas College, did emceed.

Queen was beautiful in her stunning red
dress as Pageant Hostess, coming all of the
way from California to co-host the Pageant.

Tramper finishes season with championship run

Brandon Tramper, 16, of Cedar Springs has taken the
2010 Championship in the four cylinder class at Winston
Speedway in Rothbury.
When Tramper was 6 years old, he began racing go-karts
at the kart track in Ravenna. Then at 14, he began racing cars
at Winston Speedway in the mini-stock class with a four-cyl-
inder Mustang. His first year was finished out becoming the
Rookie of the Year. In Tramper’s second year of racing he
took the 2009 Championship by only 1 point. He just com-
pleted his third year of racing with 93 point lead, earning
him the 2010 Championship. He has been practicing with an
8-cylinder 600 HP modified and will be moving up to modi-
fied class next year.
A special “thank you” to the sponsors of Tramper’s “#21”

Hometown Heroes
Staff Sgt. Landon K.
Mull
Air Force Staff Sgt. Landon K. Mull has
graduated from Airman Leadership School
at Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Ha-
waii.
The five-week course is designed to train
senior airmen to understand their positions
in the Air Force organizational structure,
combat leadership, supervisory communi-
cations skills, and profession of arms, which
are needed for professional development to
be effective noncommissioned officers. Air-
men are prepared and better equipped to
serve as supervisors, managers and rating
officials as they progress in their enlisted
military careers.
The school is the first of three levels of
professional military education programs
used to develop and cultivate leadership and
supervisory skills. The course is required for
airmen to complete prior to being promoted
to the rank of staff sergeant.
Mull, an imagery analyst assigned to the
15th Airlift Wing, has served in the military
for five years.
He is the son of John and Trish Mull of
Cedar Springs.
Pvt. Joseph A. Van
Dreumel
Army Pvt. Joseph A. Van Dreumel has
graduated from the H-8 Tracked Vehicle Re-
covery Specialist Course at Fort Knox, Ky.
The course is designed to train students
in the skills and knowledge needed to per-
form recovery operations using the M88A1/
A2 tracked recovery vehicle. The course in-
cludes field and classroom training in the
proper use of tools, equipment, technical
data, and applicable references needed to
determine recovery methods, locate recov-
ery sites, operate tactical communications
equipment, and maintain recovery vehicle
armament systems.
Students drive, maintain, and perform
preventive maintenance on recovery ve-
hicles; receive operating instructions in re-
covery vehicle component equipment, auxil-
iary power units, and use of proper recovery
safety procedures when rigging, recovering
and towing tracked vehicles.
Van Dreumel is the son of Dennis G. Van
Dreumel, and Karen A. Van Dreumel, both
of Raleigh, N.C.
His wife, Sarah, is the daughter of Allen
J. Greiner of Grand Rapids and Deborah
Wilson of Cedar Springs.
The private is a 1997 graduate of Jenison
High School.
‘Bull in a China Shop’ to
begin Oct. 14
The Cedar Springs Community Players
will be presenting the Comedy/Mystery “Bull
in a China Shop” by C.B. Gilford Thursday,
Oct. 14; Friday, Oct. 15 and Saturday, Oct.
16. Performances will be at the Kent Theatre
starting at 7:30 p.m.
The action starts when a houseful of
sweet little old ladies discover that a hand-
some bachelor lives across the street. Need-
less to say, they are delighted. When they
learn that he is none other than Detective
Dennis O’Finn, of homicide, they are faced
with the problem of how to attract his at-
tention. The answer is simplicity itself: a
nice, genteel homicide with a cup of tea as
the murder weapon. When a brash young
woman reporter begins to suspect the truth,
she becomes the next target. O’Finn is ter-
ribly embarrassed when at last he discovers
that he himself is the motive for these mad-
cap goings-on, and, in desperation, manages
to solve the case. But the dear old ladies are
too fond of him and in the end they turn the
tables on him.

Oct. 5. The meeting will be held at the Unit-
ed Church of Christ Youth Building. The
candidates for the State Senate, the House
of Representatives, and also the Lakeview
Village Council will be present to introduce
themselves and give a brief rundown on
their platform. There will be snacks, bever-
ages, cards and other games beginning at 1
p.m. Meet and greet the candidates will be-
gin at 1:30. Bring a friend, come and meet

Lakeview Area Seniors is a non-de-
nominational group gathering on the first
Tuesday of each month. The purpose of the
group is to provide meaningful information

VFW holding Swiss
steak dinner; flu shots
The monthly Swiss steak dinner at the
Sheridan V.F.W. Post will be held Satur-
day Oct. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. In addition to
the Swiss steak, the dinner will include
mashed potatoes and gravy, a vegetable,
salad and dessert plus a beverage. The
cost is $7 per serving. Children 10 and
under are $4 per serving. Take outs are

celebrates Constitution
Week
On Monday, Sept. 20, Scouts and adult
leaders of Morley-Stanwood Boy Scout 123
were helping celebrate Constitution Week.
By order of the governor of Michigan, the
week of Sept. 17-23, was proclaimed as
Constitution Week. The Daughters of the
American Revolution (DAR) started the
tradition of celebrating the Constitution
many years ago. Congress was petitioned
by DAR in 1955 to set aside a week in Sep-
tember annually to be dedicated for the ob-
servance of the U.S. Constitution.
President Eisenhower signed into Pub-
lic Law Act 915 on Aug. 2, 1956, declaring
Constitution Week to be held annually in
the month of September. The aims of the
week long celebration are to 1) emphasize
citizens responsibilities for protecting and
defending the Constitution, preserving
it for posterity; 2) inform the people that
the Constitution is the basis for America’s
great heritage and the foundation for our
way of life; and 3) encourage the study of
the historical events that led to the framing
of the Constitution in Sept. 1787.

The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors proudly named Cedar
Springs residents Fred and Carollee Gunnell as the 2010 Grand Marshal
for the 71st Annual Celebration, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010.
“The Festival is extremely proud and thankful for the many years
of outstanding dedication of both Fred and Carollee to the entire Cedar
Springs community,” said Michele Tracy Andres, President of the Fes-
tival. “Their fabulous community service in several organizations, and
their strong support of the Festival are very impressive and just what
we look for in a Red Flannel Grand Marshal. It’s very obvious Fred and
Carollee love Cedar Springs and the Red Flannel Festival.”
Fred has been a prominent leader in the community, volunteering

The cool, damp weather did not stop the 8th
annual Harvest Festival activities. The morning
started for Queen Sarah Vuillemot, First Runner Up
Ronna Kilts, Second Runner Up Daytona Niles and
Princess Melea Neely with the Queen’s Tea at Mac-
Naughton Elementary. There were 27 visiting royal-
ty members from Coral, Sand Lake, Cedar Springs,
Trufant, and Greenville who enjoyed finger foods,
cake and good conversation with our queen and
court. The grand parade started at 1pm and the girls
had a great time waving to community members
and visitors who were enjoying the day’s activities.
They also rode in the Parade of Lights later that eve-
ning when fire trucks from Howard City and nearby
towns circled the village twice, once with flashing
lights and the second time with flashing lights and
horns.
The day before the festival, Queen Sarah and her
court judged the area businesses’ scarecrow con-
test. Independent Bank had the winning entry with
a crafty game of Monopoly.
Ronna Kilts and Daytona Niles took part in the
pizza pie eating contest sponsored by Pizza Tyme.
Ronna proved how much she likes pizza by win-
ning the first heat of the competition. She received
a Kindel gift basket for her efforts. Ronna’s brother,
Ricky, also participated and he only ate a half slice
more than she did. Good job, Ronna and Daytona.

“I’m a miracle. I should not be doing what I’m doing,”
said math teacher Kim Thomsen. In January of this year she
was in a car accident that broke her neck. The doctors gave
her a 10 percent chance that she would ever walk again and
six months later told her the percentage dropped to two.
“From the beginning I set out to prove them wrong,” said
Kim, who has been an inspiration to many with her positive
attitude. Last week she returned to her teaching position at
the middle school and is working everyday for half the day.
Kim gets around in a motorized wheel chair, but through
intensive physical therapy she is beginning to walk.
Kim was in the hospital for 17 weeks after the accident.
When she was discharged in May she began living at Mary
Free Bed where she’s undergoing physical therapy. Tracy
Oostema, her physical therapist since the accident, said,
“What has been particularly unique about Kim is the way
she has handled herself in the difficult times. She has grieved
the accident and injury and there have been many tears, but
she has not allowed it to steal her joy for life. Throughout the
process she has stayed focused on her goals, has continued to
think of others, and has used the accident and her experience
to encourage others.”
Kim’s day begins at 4 a.m. After working three hours at
the school, she has physical therapy from 1 to 4 p.m. In the
evening she grades papers and prepares for the next day.
Currently her older farm home is under construction to
make it accessible for her to get around in a wheelchair. Kim
plans on moving back into her home in Stanton by November.
Since last week Kim began driving using hand controls. After
hours of training to make this possible, she has gained a little
more independence.
“Kim is a remarkable woman and it has been a privilege to
work and walk along side her in this process. She has made
remarkable improvements and many times exceeded my own
expectations and hopes for her,” said Tracy.
Kim said she’s grateful for the support of family and friends.
She pinpointed her mother for around-the-clock care. “My
mom has been there for me everyday since my accident,” she
said tearfully.

He is residing with Dean and Carla
Busse. Mizuki looks forward to learning
our culture and says he wants to hunt,
play football, and cook.
He says there are a lot of differences
between America and Japan. Mizuki’s
home is miles away from his school so
he lives in a dormitory with 50 other
boys within walking distance from his
school. Mizuki said the students stay in
one classroom while the teachers move
between subjects. In Japan, his school day begins at 9 a.m.
and ends at 4 p.m. He plays basketball and looks forward to
participating in American sports.
Lena Beuscher is from Germany. She
has been staying with the Kranz family
since August. Lena said, “American
people are more open-hearted and
friendly.” However, she has had a hard
time getting used to the food. “The food
is more unhealthy here.”
Lena said she lives in the city where
everything is within walking distance.
“You don’t need your parents to drive
you. You can take the bus, subway, or
bike.” Lena said there are no school
buses and they eat lunch, the biggest meal of the day, at home
with family.
Erik Einum is residing with Jorge
and Cindy Ballivian. He is from Norway.
Erik said school is very different in his
country. “We have one subject for one
whole day. It begins with a lecture (on
the subject) and then students receive
an assignment this is due at the end of
the day. In addition to that, every high
school student has their own laptop
provided by the school,” said Erik.
He said the subjects are math, foreign
language, Norwegian, social studies,
geography, and English.
Erik said American food is greasy and little on taste. He
says he’s glad he has a host mother who’s a good cook, making
the transition to American food easier.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.

Stop Texting, Start Driving BIG BEN’S

(NAPSI) — The urge to text while
driving has become a common-
place in the United States. In fact,
more than 25 states have signed or
implemented texting-while-driv-
ing laws. That’s good news, since
a distraction of any type--whether
you are taking your eyes off the
road, your hands off the wheel or
your mind off your driving--can
have very serious consequences.
According to the National High-
way Traffic Safety Administration,
as recently as 2008, nearly 6,000
people died in crashes involving
a distracted driver, and more than
half a million were injured.
Although the spotlight’s on cell
phones and texting, distracted
driving encompasses many other
activities--from tuning the radio,
eating, putting on makeup, read-
ing, looking for something on the
floor or in the glove box, and talk-
ing or refereeing disagreements in
the car. You can do a number of
things to break the habit and cut
down on your own distracted driv-
ing incidents, such as:
• Be prepared before you start your
car – If you put on makeup, eat, or
program your GPS before you hit
the road, you’ll cut down on some
distractions. If you organize what
you need for your final destination
before you leave, you won’t need
to search while driving.
• Go hands free – If you must use
the cell phone when driving, in-
vest in technology that will help
you keep your eyes on the road.
Several installation-free kits are
available that can help you go
hands free for less than the cost of
a ticket.
• Take a break – Even with a
hands-free device, the best idea
is to pull over if you must make
calls, answer texts or deal with is-
sues involving other passengers.
Remember ... Michigan has imple-
mented a texting-while-driving
law.

(NAPSI) — When dog owners are behind
the wheel of a car, their dog can drive
them to distraction. And that, it appears,
can lead to dangerous situations for both.
That’s one of the key findings of a recent
survey that examined what happens when
dog owners take their dog with them when
they hit the road.
Doggie Distractions
The survey was conducted by North Amer-
ica’s largest motoring and leisure travel
organization - AAA - and Kurgo, which
makes products specifically designed for
traveling with your dog. The survey found
that 31 percent of respondents admit to be-
ing distracted by their dog while driving,
while 59 percent say they have partici-
pated in at least one distracting behavior
while driving with their dog.
More than half - 55 percent - have petted
their dog while driving, and one in five
- 21 percent - allowed their dog to sit in
their lap.
Other distracting behaviors that drivers
admitted to include giving food and water
to their dog (7 percent) and playing with

BIG BUCK CONTEST
Mecosta County’s Oldest Big Buck Contest
Contest Rules
The contest for 2010 is a two category event, both archers and rifle hunters can participate. Archers harvesting a buck (only)
may enter by bringing the entire (no capes or heads) buck to our Pioneer Office, 115 N. Michigan Ave., Big Rapids, October
1st through the end of the archery season December 31, 2010. The buck will be measured and photographed during the hours
of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Rifle hunters begin their phase of the contest on November 15, 2010 and run
through the end of black-powder season. The same requirements and times apply.
Winners will be determined by a point system combining a measurement at the widest spread on the main beams
(outside spread) and the number of points (a point must be at least an inch in length). For Example: 8 points + 20 inch
outside width = 28 points.
Only bucks with four points or more or hunters with their first buck will be photographed. The photo will be published in
the Pioneer as soon as possible to the time of entry.
No entries from privately owned sanctuaries will be accepted.
Only whitetail deer qualify for the contest.
Only one entry per hunter unless the second buck is a contest prize contender in which case only one prize will be
awarded.
Prizes will be awarded at the Big Buck Award Dinner which will be announced at a later date.
Any entry that is suspected of being illegally taken will be referred to the Michigan Department of Natural resources.
The immediate families of Pioneer Group employees are not eligible to compete in the contest.
In case of a tie, the winner will be determined by the first Pioneer recorded entry.
