Conversation

1) Marlene: Hi Cristian, how are u? We came here because the next week we are going to be
evaluate by the geologists Erwin and… so..

2) Tejeda: And we know that you are good in this topic.. We need your help, we’ll hope that you
help us to study the paper “Basic relationship of well log interpretation” for the test.

3) Teo: Cristian, can you help us to define what are the different types of logs? We need to study
that and we missed a lot of class..

4) Cristian: Yes, come in, I’m going to help you but how can I start? Mmm, do you know that the
logs helps us to define physical rock characteristics such as…? Tejeda, what are these
characteristics?

5) Tejeda: I don’t know man, really. I don´t remember..

6) Lene: Cristian I think that these characteristics are lithology, porosity, water saturation and
permeability, are not?

7) Cristian: Of course! You have right, do you should write it guys.. Tejeda, next question what
could the word “log” refer to?

8) Teo: I know the answer! It refers to a particular curve, a suite or group of curves, a logging
tool or the process of logging.

9) Cristian: You only need refresh your knowledges. Tejeda, do you remember what are the
different types of logs?

10) Tejeda: Yeah, I know that...! These are electrical, nuclear and acoustic or sonic, these 3 are
the general types of logs.

11) Cristian: The next question refers to rock properties, how is porosity defined? Anyone?

12) Marlene: Me! Porosity could be defined as the percentage of voids to the total volume of
rock and I learn that it is measured as a percent and has the symbol Φ

13) Cristian: Teo, please define permeability..

14) Teo: Amm, is the property that the rocks has to transmit fluids and is controlled by the size
of the connecting passages between pores.

15) Tejeda: In my notebook says that permeability is measured in darcies and is represents by
symbol K.
16)Marlene: Cristian may I make you a question? I don’t understand the difference between
absolute and effective permeability

17) Cristian: Ok, Absolute permeability is when a rock transmit a single fluid when it is 100%
saturated with a that fluid.. and..

18) Tejeda: Yeah and Effective Permeability is the ability of the rock to transmit a fluid in the
presence of another fluid..

19) Teo: But is when the two fluids are immiscible..

20) Marlene: Got it guys! Cristian it is so easy to learn about logs if all of us help.. Thank you for
let us came to your house and helps us with this..

21)Tejeda: Yeah man, thanks I’m going to study really hard when I get home

22) Teo: Thanks bro, it clears to me so I think I’m done with the study.

23) Cristian: Don’t worry guys, when you need help you’re welcome to came here and study.
