Wheeling ECHL)LEMIEUX GROUP TAKES OVER PENGUINS ON SEPTEMBER 3, 1999
Mario Lomieux’s bid to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy received final approval from Judge
Bernard Markovitz on Sept. 3, 1999 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Lemieux and his group of investors had filed a plan of reorganization in March. That plan was con-
firmed by Markovitz on June 24, leading to several more months of negotiations with partners and
creditors,
“The puck is now on Mr. Lemieux’s stick,” Markovitz said at the final hearing on Sept. 3. “And we
all know what he's been able to do with that in the past.”
The Penguins, under previous co-owners Roger Marino and Howard Baldwin, fled for bankruptcy
on Oct. 13, 1998, reporting more than $100 milion in debts.
The franchise continued to operate last season under the specter of bankruptcy, although GM
Craig Patrick, Coach Kevin Constantine and the Penguins players did a remarkable job of tuning out
the distractions,
Infact, the Penguins posted their ninth straight winning season, going 38-30-14, and earned their
ninth straight Stanley Cup playot berth.
They then upset top-seeded New Jersey in the first round of the playoffs before falling to Toronto
in six games in the second round
But the team’s future was in doubt until Lemieux’s reorganization plan received the blessing of both
the court and the NHL. Two days before Markovitz’final approval, the NHL's Board of Governors
voted unanimously to approve Lemieux’s ownership bid
Lemieux received a standing ovation from the board when that decision was announced
| haven't seen anything like that here, anything quite that spontaneous,” said Edmonton Oilers
president and GM Glen Sather - himself a former Penguins player. “Mario has always been a player
who has demanded a lot of respect just by his presence. He has an aura about him. He's polite,
respectful and intelligent, the same way he played the game. I'm happy for Mario and I'm happy for
Pittsburgh. It's a great hockey city.”
