Name: ________________________________________ Score: ____________________

Directions: Read and answer the following items carefully. Write your COMPLETE AND
ORGANIZED SOLUTIONS either on sheets of yellow paper or typewritten on a short bond paper.

1. A researcher wants to estimate the number of hours that 6-year old children spend playing with their
tablets/iPads. A sample of 75 six-year old children was observed to have a mean playing time of
4.25 hours. The population is normally distributed with a population standard deviation of 0.8 hours.
Compute for the 98.5% confidence interval of the population mean. (6 points)

2. Arch. Miguel Soriano, admission officer of Philippine Republic University, wants to know the mean
age of all entering statistics majors. She computed a mean age of 17.65 years and a standard
deviation of 1.5 years on a random sample of 27 entering statistics majors purportedly coming from
a normally distributed population. With 98% confidence, compute for the interval estimate of the
population mean. (6 points)

3. Professor Victor Vigo Jr. conducted a final examination to all of his students enrolled in Basic
Calculus. After checking the papers, Prof. Vigo selected 125 students and obtained a mean score of
60, with a sample standard deviation of 10. Compute for 92.5% confidence interval of the population
mean. (6 points)

4. The cashier department of Dr. Felomena L. Sicuan Memorial University claims that the monthly
salary of their employees is Php 24500.00 with a standard deviation of Php 7200.00. A researcher
takes a random sample of 68 employees and found out that they have a mean salary of Php 21750.00.
Do the 68 selected employees have lower salaries than the rest? Test the claim at 5% level of
significance. (6 points)

5. A certain study claims that elementary teachers work an average of 42.5 hours per work during the
school year. A superintendent of a certain province surveyed 25 randomly selected teachers and
found that they work for an average of 44.75 hours a week with a standard deviation of 3.2 hours.
Test if the mean number of teachers' work hours recorded by the supervisor's school district is
greater than the recorded national average. Use 0.01 level of significance. (6 points)

6. The mean weight of the baggage carried into an airplane by individual passengers at J. A. J. Eugenio
International Airport is 18.25 kilograms. A statistician takes a random sample of 49 baggages and
obtains a sample mean weight of 19.75 with a sample standard deviation of 8.1 kilograms. Suppose
that Ha: "Sample mean weight is not equal to 18.25 kilograms", test the null hypothesis at 10% level
of significance. (6 points)

7. A sample of 65 observations is selected from a normal population with a sam ple mean of 4.95 and
a sample standard deviation of 0.55. Another sample of 80 observations is selected from a normal
population with a sample mean of 5.40 and a sample standard deviation 0.75. Can we say that the
first sample mean is equal to the second sample mean? Use 0.01 level of significance. (8 points)

8. Karl, an expert in agriculture, randomly selected 12 matured mango trees of one variety and
determined the mean height to be 17.8 feet with a standard deviation of 1.5 feet. He also selected
17 mango trees of another variety and found out that their mean height is 15.2 feet with a standard
deviation of 1.1 feet. Using 5% level of significance, test whether the difference between the two
sample means is significant:
a. if the population SD of the samples' parent distribution is equal. (8 points)
b. if the population SD of the samples' parent distribution is not equal. (8 points)
