Moves To Providence
The nationally recognized and prestigious Bay Colony
Dog Show is moving to Providence! In its 98th year,
the American Kennel Club show, as a result of the
closing of the Bayside Exposition Center, has
chosen the Rhode Island Convention Center as its
new venue. “We are very excited about moving the
Bay Colony Dog Show to Providence... to this world-
class facility in the center of this very vital city,
surrounded by restaurants, shopping, and entertain-
ment,” stated Theodore Hollander, Show Chair and
member of the Eastern Dog Club.
The Bay Colony Dog Show, one of the largest in the
country, presents about “2,500 dogs coming from all
over the country to compete” including “many of the
top dogs competing at Westminster,” said Hollander.
Volunteers from AKC dog clubs the Eastern Dog
Club, the Ladies’ Dog Club, the Middlesex County
Kennel Club, and the Yankee Golden Retriever Club
organize and present four spectacular days of agil-
ity trials and conformation trials as well as obedience
competitions and competitions for “Best of Breed”
and “Best in Group.”

Next year’s show at the Rhode Island Convention
Center in Providence is scheduled to be held Decem-
ber 3-6 and will feature the professional and majestic
presentation of 155 breeds and, as always, a diverse
array of activities including festive holiday shopping,
hands-on demonstrations, and a variety of educa-
tional and entertainment exhibits. The show is in-
tended for dog lovers young and old and Providence
is delighted to expect more than 8,000 competitors
and over 20,000 dog enthusiasts, vendors and
attendees.

The show is very family oriented, especially in

its most recent event this past December 4-7
at the Bayside Exposition Center, during which
adults and children took part in interactive demonstra-
tions including a “Meet the Breeds” event, and were
delighted by police and working dog demonstrations,
and a rescue parade. There were also educational
exhibits for anyone interested in taking part in dog
shows, or other such volunteer and career opportuni-
ties, as well as rescue and adoption programs. More
than 100 vendors exhibited dog-related holiday and
specialty items for purchase including hand-knitted

Guess who got
a puppy!
Sorry, no. Not the Obamas. It was Vice
President-elect Joe Biden, who picked out a
German Shepherd puppy from a breeder in
Chester County, Pa., last weekend.
The story was first reported by the Local
Daily News in West Chester. Biden’s wife
Jill had promised her husband he could
have a new puppy if he and Barack Obama
won the election. She even taped photos
of various dog breeds on Biden’s campaign
plane.
The Bidens won’t take delivery of the new
dog until after the inauguration next month
-- and after he’s undergone some training
by the breeder. Biden’s granddaughters
will pick a name.

In the spring of 2009 the Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club Inc. will host its first
“The Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club Inc. Presents: The Dog Trainers Depot”

Dogs prove more
effective than pills!
Research shows that dog owners make
fewer visits to the doctor and have a more
active lifestyle. UBC professor and author
Stanley Coren says dogs work better than
Prozac, a prescription antidepressant -- and
that’s no exaggeration.
According to a study published recently in
the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, the
positive effects of having a familiar, friendly
dog close by include lowered blood pressure,
slowed heart beat and more relaxed muscles
-- all signs of reduced stress.
Unlike prescription medications, the positive
effects of having a beloved canine close by
are also achieved much faster than pills. It
took only five to 24 minutes for people to ex-
hibit signs of reduced stress when they were
with their dog, compared with the days
or weeks it can take before people benefit
from the effects anit-depresants, according

photo crew. Of course we were no match for what he was really there for, a

They Do
That?
Why do dogs walk in
a circle before they
lie down?
This is probably an evolutionary
behavior left over from wolf
ancestors. Wolves instinctively circle
to create a nest in brush, snow, grass,
or other bedding. Some believe the
circling also allows them to scan for
danger, but since wolves will not curl up
and sleep soundly if they sense danger, this
theory is not likely. Your dog is essentially flattening
an evolutionary nest in brush that isn’t really there.
Why do cats breathe with their
mouth slightly open after smelling
certain smells?
This is called a Flehmen response (I call it smell
tasting!). Many animals do it, including horses and
elephants. The animal is curling back their upper lip
to transfer molecules from the chemical signal they
have detected, like urine, to their vomeronasal organ
(VNO) or Jacobson’s organ. The VNO is a chemical
receptor that provides certain information about the
animal who left behind the chemical signal, such as
estrus, physiological state of an animal, how long ago
the animal passed by, etc. You can try this yourself,
but you’ll just look really odd because humans do not
have a VNO.
You may be sitting around this holiday
season…with a few days off…avoiding
holiday shopping. In your procrastina-
tion, you may notice your pet doing weird
things. Or maybe you’ve always seen these
things and have just wondered “why do
they do that?”
Well, this article is intended to provide you
some quick answers so you can get out
there and buy your pet some new toys for
under the tree.
Why do dogs kick out behind
them after they urinate
or defecate?
There are a few thoughts behind this
one. One is that the dog is trying to
spread around the chemical message
they just deposited, for maximum
communication possibility to anyone who
may come upon the location. Whether it’s
feces or urine, excrement contains a lot of
information. Another thought is that the animal
is leaving a visual marker on the ground with all that
disrupted earth that will signal others to come over and
check out this spot. A third thought is that the kick-
ing is a visual signal to anyone who might be looking.
Many dogs will kick out and hold their legs out and
head high and look around as if to say: “Everybody see
that? I just crapped on the grass! Yeah, that’s right, it’s
my grass now! You see that?” Personally, I believe it’s
all of the above.
Why do pets lick themselves?
Pets don’t typically use toilet tissue after they relieve
themselves, so they may just be cleaning up. The other
answer? Because they can! Yes, animals masturbate
– they just aren’t very private about it. I had a client
whose female dog would get excited whenever guests
came over and she would sit in the dining room and lick
herself (the dog would, not the owner).
They called it dinner and a show!

Why do dogs howl at sirens
or music?
Dogs and wolves howl as a form of long-distance com-
munication to gather as a group, identify the group, or
indicate loneliness. When one howls, the others often
instinctively join in. When dogs hear sirens or music
(particularly from reed instruments), the sounds may
contain certain characteristics similar to a howl that
triggers the dog to howl along. Some dogs are more
prone to this, while others will never do it. It is inter-
esting to note, that you can always hear a dog when
it howls along with a siren or singing or music. Why?
Dogs purposefully change the pitch or tone of their howl
to be different from that which they are howling along
with. This is probably to allow others to identify mul-
tiple participants within the group howl.
Why do dogs roll in dead things?
Dogs are predators, and predators instinctively do not
want to be detected. What prey animal would be afraid
of a dead bird? Or a pile of horse manure? Dogs love
to roll in stinky things to cover up their own scent. This
is especially true of hunting dogs, and even more so
after they have just returned from the groomer. There’s
nothing worse than seeing your dog an hour after
getting back from the groomer, covered in poo, bows

and all. Powder smells great to us; rotten squirrel
smells great to a dog.
Why do cats knead soft things?
Kittens instinctively knead their mommy’s belly to
stimulate milk production during nursing. This behavior
is often retained into adulthood, and when a cat steps
on something soft they may automatically start knead-
ing. No, they aren’t waiting for milk to come out of the
couch – it’s more like a comforting feeling. “Ahhhh,
yeeeeessss, that’s nice….” I especially enjoy it when
my cat kneads on my stomach…makes me think about
joining a gym…
Our pets display many odd behaviors that captivate
and intrigue humans. Pay special attention to your pet
this holiday season and watch out of interesting behav-
iors. You may just be seeing evolutionary behaviors in
action. Or your pet may just be really odd…Either way,
happy holidays to all, and to all (circle, circle, circle) a
good night.

Feral cats spend their whole lives outside. They can be
found all over the country, from cities to farmland and New
England is no exception. They are members of the domestic
cat species, but are not socialized to humans, and so they
live amongst their own in “colonies.”
While these hardy felines are accustomed to the outdoors,
Americans still care about them. My organization, Alley Cat
Allies, estimates that millions of people help these cats, by
setting out food or water or organizing Trap-Neuter-Return
programs to improve their lives and stop the breeding cycle.
With the cold weather upon us, there are a few simple steps you can
take for the outdoor cats in your neighborhood to ensure a safer and
warmer winter this year.
Step one:
Build an outdoor shelter.
Shelters built specifically for feral cats guarantee a warm spot to
escape the harsh winter weather and help deter the cats from places
they are not wanted. Shelters are easy and inexpensive to build. You
can use the plans available at www.alleycat.org, or modify a pre-built
dog-house.

food during winter months.
Keep water from freezing by using bowls that are deep not wide and placed in a
sunny spot. If possible, refill the bowls with hot or warm water. A pinch of sugar

Try to keep to a regular feeding schedule every day. The cats will come to expect
you, and the food and water will spend less time in the cold before it is consume

Get educated.
Educate your family and your neighbors about the habits of outdoor cats during
the winter. Check under the car before starting it, as cats will sometimes crawl into
the engine or hide underneath for warmth. Remember that antifreeze is lethal to
cats and other animals, so keep it out of reach.
Prevent another “kitten season” by getting the cats neutered now. Cats have a
63-day gestation period and usually mate in winter. A local volunteer group
practicing Trap-Neuter-Return may be able to help. Or visit our web site, www.

W hen it comes to striking at the root, I believe that chang-
ing the laws in Rhode Island is the most significant step
that we can take to help the plight of animals in our state.
For example, Sen. John J. Tassoni Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield,
North Smithfield), a longtime champion of animal rights in
the Senate, has re-introduced a bill relating to the matter of
tethering dogs outside, penned, or caged for extended periods
of time in temperatures that are beyond the standard as
defined by the Tufts Animal Care and Condition Scale. Senator
Tassoni recently stated, “It amounts to nothing short of cruelty
when someone tethers a dog outside for long periods of time,
unsheltered, in extreme temperatures.”

During the last General Assembly session, the Senator’s bill
passed unanimously in a Senate committee and on the Sen-
ate floor; however, the bill, along with many other bills, was
stalled in the House of Representatives.
Nonetheless, in spite of political roadblocks, there has been
meaningful legislation introduced and important animal pro-
tection laws brought to the forefront in recent years in Rhode
Island, including the gas chamber ban in RI, which made RI
only one of a half dozen states to place a ban on that barbaric
method of euthanization as well as a law making spaying/
neutering cats mandatory in RI. Rhode Island is the first state
to have a mandatory spay/neuter law.
Now, we have a tethering bill also called the 24/7 bill that
will be re-introduced this year. Senator Tassoni’s bill will have
a significant impact on how dogs are treated in bad weather
in particular.
Defenders of Animals’ efforts, I believe, follow the sentiments
of what Samuel Adams said years ago: “...it does not require a
majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen
to set brushfires in people’s minds.”
We can continue to save one animal at a time and that’s
admirable, but we must utilize our resources for actions that
will have the most significant positive impact on animals in
our state; namely, changing the laws regarding the welfare of
animals, and the best way to accomplish this is to have people
testify at the committee hearings on legislation; having large
turnouts at hearings has been, without a doubt, the most ef-
fective way to convince legislators to vote favorably on
animal bills.
Furthermore, legislators know that the number one complaint
via phone calls and emails has been dogs left outside 24/7
without adequate shelter, food, and water. Animal control and
law enforcement officers have been hampered by a lack of
strong laws that focus on this issue.

urges pet owners to take extra precautions
this winter to ensure the safety of their
companion animals. Here are a few tips
to help you do just that! 
 

Don’t Leave Pets Outdoors Keep Away From Antifreeze

When The Temperature Drops.
Dogs and cats are safer indoors, except when taken out for
supervised exercise.
1. Regardless of the season, shorthaired, very young, or old dogs
and all cats should never be left outside without supervision.
2. Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the
winter because keeping warm depletes energy.
3. You might also want to put a sweater on your older or short
haired pup - and it’s not just a fashion statement...they can get
cold too
4. Routinely check your pet’s water dish to make certain the water
is fresh and unfrozen.
5. Use plastic food and water bowls rather than metal; when the
temperature is low, your pet’s tongue can stick and freeze to metal.
Check Your Car.
Warm engines in parked cars attract cats and small wildlife, who
may crawl up under the hood. To avoid injuring any hidden animals,
bang on your car’s hood to scare them away before starting your
engine.
Wipe Those Paws.
The salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate
the pads of your pet’s feet and may be harmful if ingested. Wipe the
feet with a damp towel before your pet licks them to remove snow
packed between your pet’s paws. Pet-friendly ice melts are available
at many pet supply stores across the nation or online.
Antifreeze is a deadly poison, but it has a sweet taste that can at-
tract animals and children. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze (and
all household chemicals) out of reach. Better yet, use antifreeze-
coolant made with propylene glycol, which is less toxic in small
amounts than traditional ethylene glycol antifreeze.
Provide A Dry Dog House.
No matter what the temperature, wind chill can threaten a pet’s
life. A dog or cat is happiest and healthiest when kept indoors. If
your dog spends significant time outdoors, however, he/she must
be protected by a dry, draft-free doghouse that is large enough to
allow the dog to sit and lie down comfortably, but small enough to
hold in his/her body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches
off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The
house should be turned to face away from the wind, and the door-
way should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.
The best prescription for winter’s woes is to keep your dog or cat
inside with you and your family. The happiest dogs are those who
are taken out frequently for walks and exercise but kept inside
the rest of the time. Dogs and cats are social animals who crave
human companionship. Your animal companions deserve to live
indoors with you and your family.

haunted by a horse
M y phantom album includes
canaries and rabbits, doves
and dogs, parakeets and
goldfish, mice and things rescued
from the biology lab. But this
story is about a pet horse that I
met only in ghostly form. As a
family memory. As a story told by
the fireside, and written and illus-
trated in an article due to appear in
a magazine dedicated to gentle care
for horses of all kinds. My tale
begins in wintry Montreal.
My grandfather had moved to
Quebec from a village in Rumania,
near the border of Russia. He
depended upon his pet horse for
his work as a coal merchant. But
the faithful beast added warmth
and character to the house as well.
Through the long Canadian win-
ters, a horse can pull a wagon over
the snow, and its friendship can
add spiritual companionship and
physical heat to the dwelling shared
by man and animal.
This grandfather had daughters and illustration by herbert l. fink
one son, his lastborn, charged with the job of feeding the
oats and hay to the large creature by the stove. “Now,
don’t just throw the grasses at him. Hand them politely,
courteously. He helps us and we must respect him and
treat him with affection.” My only maternal uncle often
reminded me of that boyhood theme of his recall. And
he was a fine narrator of such yarns, patient and quiet in
the delivery. He learned his personality from the horse.
In a way.
Now, my mother (her name was Betty, in its American
version) moved to Rhode Island when she married. Like
so many in our state who spoke some French from the
provinces, mixed with the proverbs and old sayings. And
she missed the horse. And so, she drew and painted the

pet pony. She inscribed it on her
tea-cup, as her
personal logo. She identified with
its will to work, no matter the
weather, with blinders on, within
a routine of service. She crafted a
large mosaic table to stand by the
hearth, the way her childhood horse
had stood by the open fire at the
stove on long, bitter nights. Her
character, like her younger brother,
was deeply influenced by that mild
but mammoth ally from the north-
land. Betty never, ever, complained
about the winter, she strode through
the snow with zest and zing, like
that beloved being from her
girlhood.
Do I exaggerate? Or am I exploring
the spirit of the proud but patient
steed? Ah, what have we lost in sur-
rending what is natural to all things
mechanical, technical, convenient
without responsibility, disposable
without regret? In the bible, and
in folklore, the horse can speak
and give good counsel. And so, that
breathing hot-blooded but kindly creature from a frigid
space says out of its time to me, “Remember how close
we were, once upon a time, thou and I, and be proper and
thoughtful to all who share your places upon this planet.”
I welcome the pets I have shared with my children and
cared for as best I could. I learned how to save the life of
a goldfish or a squirrel. How to grieve for the victims of
cruelty or neglect, or just the speed of passing cars
on a busy road. I have rescued cats abandoned on a
major highway.
But my grandfather’s horse haunts me privately, with regal
dignity above them all and with nostalgia, and I pen these
phrases to bring back its soul, to inspire me through the
cold months and in the dark moments before us.

The Magic of Animal
Telepathy
Whether you know it or not, your animals are communicating
with you all the time. You may not be “hearing” them, because
their language is a silent one. It’s the language of telepathy, and
though it doesn’t necessarily express itself in familiar words, it’s
our animals’ native tongue.
As a professional animal communicator, my role is to translate
animals’ telepathic messages into everyday language, and to
open a window into their minds and hearts so their human
companions can better understand how profoundly their pets
understand them. By listening to the silence of the animals,
I am almost like their therapist: someone who can really hear
their thoughts and sometimes, literally feel their pain.
The stories they tell me can be funny or amazing, but they
always demonstrate that animals have a sensitivity and sensibil-
ity that exceeds anything we might have imagined.
A few months ago, during a session with a black cat named
Manny, who has cancer, I perceived that he was showing me
an image of a bridge. I assumed that perhaps he might be able
to see a bridge from the window of his urban apartment, and
mentioned that to his person, Lisa.
“No,” Lisa said, “we can’t see a bridge from our window, but
I have been reading the poem, ‘The Rainbow Bridge,’ to him,
to let him know that it’s okay with me if he needs to go there.”
Even though Manny had never actually observed an actual
bridge, he “saw” the bridge that Lisa had described in this poi-
gnant poem, and let me know that he understood her message.
All I knew about another cat, Marcie, was that she had been
diagnosed with a terminal illness. Her person, Sandy, had not
shared with me the nature of her cat’s physical ailment, but as
soon as I connected with Marcie, she showed me that she was
receiving subcutaneous fluids. I was astonished when Sandy
confirmed that in fact, Marcie was suffering from Chronic
Renal Failure, and that she received the sub-q fluids
every other day!
But Marcie wasn’t feeling sorry for herself, not one bit. She
had a lot of other things to say, including the fact that she
liked pizza! I honestly thought that I must have misinterpreted
this part of Marcie’s message, and was hesitant to share it with
Sandy. But I always try to accurately convey the information I
receive from an animal, even if it doesn’t always seem to make
sense, so I told Sandy about Marcie’s pizza vision. She laughed,
and said that at her house, Friday is “pizza night,” and as soon
as the steaming pie is served, Marcie jumps into the warm pizza
box and luxuriates there, while everyone else is eating!
My conversations with animals have taught me that it’s virtually
impossible to keep a secret from them, and conversely, that they
will confide your secrets if given the opportunity!
A few years ago, a young couple, John and Carol, asked me to
communicate with their two cats, Joe and Vito. Joe was very
sick, and the couple wanted to get his, and Vito’s, perspective on
what was happening in the household.
During my session with Vito, he told me that he was worried,
because he knew that John and Carol were thinking about
getting another cat. When I told them about it, John and
Carol were in disbelief. They acknowledged that they wanted
to introduce another cat into the family, but told me that they
had been extremely careful never to talk about their intention in
front of Joe or Vito! In fact, they had only discussed it on the
phone, from their respective offices, or when they were outside
the house.
I explained to them that it didn’t matter one iota that they had
never actually talked about the new cat out loud, because Vito
had done what cats are so good at: he had read their minds.
He was completely aware of their plans, in spite of their efforts
at secrecy!
When it comes to keeping your own secrets safe, I’ve learned
that animals won’t necessary cooperate. We all know that ani-
mals have incredible memories, but what most people may not

realize is that animals can describe, in very vivid terms, situations in which they
were abused or badly treated, even when the mistreatment happened months or
years in the past. The perpetrator who hits a dog in the privacy of his own home
or yard may assume that no one will ever know anything about it, but given a
chance, the dog will tell all.

One of my canine clients, a feisty Scottie named “Freddy,” told me that he wanted
desperately to play with his human “brother,” Chad, and his friends, but he
showed me that when he tried to join their games, the boys smacked him on the

nose or on the side of his head, in the hopes that it would make Freddy so away. deliciously

I realized that this was a potentially dangerous situation for all concerned, and I

knew that I had to share Teddy’s story with Chad’s mother. When she received rsel

the transcript of my session with Teddy, she printed it out and showed it to Chad,
who seemed very surprised at being “caught in the act,” and exclaimed, “I’m

Chad had never stopped to think that he might really be hurting his dog, but
when he read Teddy’s uncannily accurate description what had been happening, it
touched his heart. By revealing their “secret,” Teddy had helped Chad realize that
he deserved to be treated with respect and kindness, just like any other member of at
