of rumours circulating around town, making it
difficult for units to sell, placing added finan-
cial strain on seniors, and costing nearly half-

tions – all for a clean bill of health.
The rumour claims the 30-year-old Lambert
Village building is covered in mould, which
was the real reason for last year’s construction.
As a result, realtors say the rumour is making
it difficult to sell seven units currently on the
market, some of which have been listed for a
couple years.
“The market’s not wonderful but those units

mour has a lot to do with it,” said Carol Wara-
wa, with CIR Realty who’s been trying to sell
one of the units for two years.
“As far as I’m concerned they went above
and beyond to make sure everything was OK.
Unfortunately, I think, that rumour has played

what the answer is.”

Community gem recognized for years

of dedication and devotion

For the past 22 years, May Rostecki-
Budzey has preferred working tirelessly
behind the scenes in providing oppor-
tunities and support for all members of
society. Unwilling to let her labour go
unnoticed publicly, Strathmore’s Par-
ent Link Centre nominated her among
a record-breaking 49 nominees worthy
of the 2018 Aspen Family & Commu-
nity Network Society’s Hope Award.
As one of 10 recipients to accept the
award, Rostecki-Budzey – who’d rather
avoid the spotlight – was able to draw
attention to various community-based
programs often overlooked, and dedi-
cated the award to the late Jeanette
MacKay; a visionary, Rostecki-Budzey
said, brought understanding and pas-
sion for the community to Strathmore
with the introduction of the Parent Link
Centre in 2011.
“I’m not crazy about other people
knowing what I do; I know what I do
is good for the community and I don’t
need to brag about it or share it. I can
go to sleep every night knowing that
I changed a family’s life, but it’s hum-
bling because there are so many pro-
grams that could’ve received it,” said
Rostecki-Budzey, executive manager
for Growing Families Society.
“I’m privileged because there are so
many people who do this work. To be
chosen is welcoming to the point that
early childhood is being recognized and
how important it is in different ways.”
As one of 12 children raised in ru-
ral Manitoba and attending a country
school with one teacher educating
eight grades at once, Rostecki-Budzey
knows her upbringing had a direct im-
pact on her career path. Yet she credit-
ed her staff, volunteers, board and part-

the first employee of Growing Oppor-
tunities when it launched in Strathmore
22 years ago, Rostecki-Budzey has seen
family dynamics change and the soci-
ety’s focus shift from nutritional health
to social and societal issues. The orga-
nization soon evolved into the Growing
Families Society and Rostecki-Budzey
started establishing roughly 25 partner-
ships with organizations in Strathmore,
Wheatland County and Drumheller.
“I think back then families supported
one another to a different degree than
they do now … when we went to events
it was all about you respected your el-
ders and everyone disciplined you,” she
said. “I think my passion comes from
knowing how much change and impact
we can have on every person in a posi-
tive way. There’s that phrase, ‘it takes a
village to raise a child’ and I’m truly a
believer in that and that’s why you have
partnerships.”

The event provided the public a chance to see
the pasture-raised hogs first-hand and to meet
some of the litters that were born a few weeks
ago.
In comparison to typical breeds that head to
the butcher after six months, Mangalitsa pigs are
raised for 24 months before leaving the farm. The
meat differs in colour and texture – a dark red
meat that’s rich in flavour with lots of omega 3,
6 and 9 fatty acids, that can cure for three years
rather than six months.
Breeding of the Mangalitsa pigs began in 1800
in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and was offi-
cially recognized in Europe in 1927. With the end
of the Second World War, farmers who used the
pigs for lard turned to oils, and in 1990 fewer
than 200 Mangalitsa pigs remained in Hungary
and Austria. Animal geneticist, Peter Toth, was
credited for saving the breed from the brink of
extinction nearly 30 years ago, with gilts and
boars being exported to the United States, Aus-
tralia, the Netherlands and to a handful of farm-
ers in Canada. Mangalitsa pigs grow thick hair,
dividing the pigs into three breeds: the blonde,
the swallow-bellied that are black and white, and
the reds.
Stender said when she found out no one in
Canada was raising the red – the breed used to
serve the Hungarian Empire – she veered from
her original plan of just raising typical pigs to the
Mangalitsa reds.
Her hands-on approach means Stender sets up
her chair, blanket and pillow, and sleeps in the
barn with a sow and her new litter until the ba-
bies are three days old and the risk of the mother
squishing her babies has reduced. She’s also no-
ticed her hands have turned into farm hands with
hours spent rubbing the bellies of over 50 pigs.
Her decision to feed by hand means it takes her
over an hour to do the chores that normally re-
quire 20 minutes.
The family was overwhelmed at first with the
rate at which their stock grew. They are plan-
ning to have their meat be a staple in various
restaurants and hopefully become a local feature
in Strathmore’s establishments.
With the success of PigStock2018, the Hun-
garian Canadian Cultural Association of Calgary,
which bused nearly 200 people to the event from
Calgary, has already voiced their interest in at-
tending the event again next year.

Why Alberta needs the
Freedom Conservative Party

On July 20, we founded the
new Freedom Conservative Par-
ty of Alberta. Please allow me to
introduce our party to you in the
space of this (relatively) short
column, and then answer some
questions that you are surely al-
ready asking.
The Freedom Conservative
Party (FCP) is a party of grass-
roots conservatives, libertarians
and Alberta patriots. We will
give Albertans a principled alter-
native to the NDP in constituen-
cies where there is no risk of the
NDP getting elected.
Conservatives and libertarians
are natural allies. They overlap
on 95 per cent of the issues, and
that five per cent of disagree-
ment can be settled by returning
the right of MLAs to vote freely.
We want the government out
of your wallet, your bedroom,
your church and your school. In
short, if you are not hurting any-
one else, it’s none of the govern-
ment’s business.
While other parties supported
or ran away from NDP bills this
spring, we are the only party
that voted against race and
gender quotas, anti-free speech
laws and government pipeline
ownership. We are the only par-
ty that voted for a five per cent
MLA pay cut, and we are the
only party to propose a detailed
plan to balance the budget in
two years.
We are Alberta patriots. That
is, we believe in an Alberta that
is strong and free. The federal
government is more often than
not hostile to Alberta, and we
are generally lucky just to be
ignored. The fact is that Alber-
ta will not get a fair shake out
of confederation in its current
configuration. Therefore, the ob-
jective of Alberta’s next govern-
ment should be to make Ottawa
matter less.
While establishment parties
are content to either roll over
for Ottawa or complain about
its overreach, we are done with
talk. We are committed to re-
turning more decision making
and money back to Alberta, and
Albertans.
All provinces (with the partial
exception of Quebec) have pow-
ers under the constitution that
they do not exercise, but instead
delegate to Ottawa. The FCP
will take back control over these
powers, including: EI, CPP, tax
collection, administration of the
Firearms Act and immigration

of Alberta taxpayers and allow
us to make our own decisions
here at home.
The FCP will establish an Al-
berta constitution that limits
the power of its government,
enshrines freedoms left out of
the federal charter like property
rights, and gives its citizens the
right to recall MLAs and initiate
referendums.
Beyond this, it is time that Al-
berta held a referendum to give
its government a mandate to re-
negotiate our constitutional re-
lationship with the federal gov-
ernment to end the institutional
discriminations that Alberta and
the west face. To borrow a pas-
sage from our past, “The West
Wants In.”
Alberta desperately needs
democratic reform that includes
both recall and referenda, but
also accountability for MLAs and
party nominees. MLAs in both
establishment parties are now
whipped on every single vote
in the legislature. We will en-
tirely abolish the office of “party
whip,” and allow our MLAs to
vote freely.
Most importantly, we will en-
sure that the grassroots mem-
bers of our party select their
candidates and policies without
undue influence from leaders
and backroom party operatives.
This is no idle “grassroots guar-
antee” to be discarded at the first
sign of non-conformist decisions
by our members.
While the NDP (and Trudeau
Liberals) appoint candidates and
cabinet ministers on the basis of
sex, race and religion, the Tories
have succumbed to the forces
of political correctness and are
also doing so through more sub-
tle means. More than a dozen
nomination races across Alberta
(so far) have involved backroom
party operatives rigging nomi-
nations using a toolbox of dirty
tricks. In conservative constitu-
encies, if the local members are
deprived of the right to select
their own candidate in an open,
free and fair nomination, they
will effectively have an MLA ap-
pointed for them. That is, they
will have no other conservative
choice. MLAs that owe their jobs
to their leader will inevitably
represent the government to the
people, and not the people to
the government.
And now for the answer to the
question that you’ve probably
been asking yourself since you

per cent, and since then, the
NDP have never exceeded five
per cent in all local polls. That
means that even if the NDP re-
ceived the same number of votes
as in 2015 (however unlikely),
they could not win, even if there
were four different conserva-
tives with roughly equal support
on the ballot.
Our policy in defeating the
NDP is simple: if there is any
chance that the NDP could win
in a constituency, we will not
field a candidate there. In con-
stituencies where the NDP stand
no chance, we will give voters a
choice to select an unapologetic
conservative that will vote for,
speak for and serve them, not
party interests.
If we are honoured by Alber-
tans to elect a strong caucus of
Freedom Conservative MLAs, we
will be willing to work with the
Tories to not just tear down the
ruinous legacy of the NDP, but
also that of Alison Redford and
Ed Stelmach. A new government
that includes Freedom Conser-
vative MLAs will be more con-
servative than one composed
only of Tories.
For my own part, I have my
faults. I’ve made mistakes –
some real, some less so – but I
chose to take responsibility for
them and learn from them. I
don’t pretend to be a shiny, per-
fect career politician. I just do
what I think is right for my con-
stituents, for Alberta and for my
family. I speak my mind, even
when it’s not politically correct
to do so, and I frankly don’t care
what the pundits, socialists or
old Tory establishment says.
Our party is new, but it has
fight in it. It is growing aggres-
sively. We are building a com-
mitted, strong team of grass-
roots conservatives, libertarians
and patriots from across Alberta.
I want you to join this fight.

ing last weekend’s Indian Rodeo Cow-
boys Association tour stop in Siksika
Nation.
Junior and senior Native American
contestants from all over descended to
the Siksika Rodeo Arena for two days
of competition as part of the annual
Siksika Nation Fair.
Travis Maguire was the big winner
in bull riding – his score of 65 held
throughout the weekend and he took
home $708.76. Maguire is now one
spot back for the automatic bid into the
Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR)
with $6,034.71 in winnings this sea-
son. Noah Wolf narrowly lost out on
the first-place money with a ride of 64.
Wolf still managed to pocket $586.56.
Marty Young Bear captured the sad-
dle bronc with a ride of 68 that earned
him $654. Cory Fox covered his horse
for 66 points and $541.
In the bareback riding, Cam Bruised-
head set the bar high with a 72 and
walked away with $654. He also occu-
pies the second spot in the INFR stand-
ings, a little less than $5,000 behind
the season leader Steven DeWolfe.
Chad Randle rode his horse to a
64 and won $541, while Jacoby John
placed third with a 60 and walked
away with $428.
Sterling Small was the big winner in
the steer wrestling, as his incredibly
quick time of 4.4 earned him $1,226.
Nolan Conway was second with a time
of 4.68, which paid out $1,015. Otys

days with a 5.19 and $803.

spent on conditioning and meeting new teammates. The Badgers will get into full contact practices

The 21st season of the Strathmore
Community Football Association Bad-
gers is a few weeks away and feel-
ing closer every day now that training
camp has started.
The biggest change to the organi-
zation comes at the bantam level, as
Gregg Zaugg takes over as head coach
for Mike Hopp.
Hopp was at the helm for one season,
as the Badgers missed the playoffs.
According to the Badgers website,
Hopp resigned due to “employment
workload.”
The Badgers went with a familiar face
in Zaugg, as he spent the past four sea-
sons working as an assistant coach with
the successful peewee programs.
“I’ve known these kids for a few
years now and I know how these boys
work and what they need to operate at
the highest level,” said Zaugg. “Hope-
fully we have a great year.”
Observing last year’s bantams from
afar, as Zaugg’s oldest son Brigham
was a member of the winless unit, the
new head coach thinks the team lost
the drive in the second half of early in
the year after a few tough losses. Zaugg
thinks boosting their motivation will
help nip that in the bud.
The bantams will welcome a large
crop of players graduating from the
peewee program this year. The pee-
wees, formerly under Zaugg, captured
the Central Peewee Football League
(CPWFL) title two years ago and lost in
the championship game last fall.
There are no major coaching changes
at the senior level, but Head Coach Sean
Seafoot is hoping to get an injection of
players from outside the program.

this season, Seafoot hopes to attract
players from that program during train-
ing camp.
“It’s still early for numbers, so it’s
tough to say what kind of team we will
be this year. But with HCC program not
running this year, hopefully a bunch
of their kids don’t transfer to the high
school, which would allow them to
come out and play with us,” said Sea-
foot, who is entering his third season
behind the bench of the senior unit.
Reinforcements could take the Bad-
gers from a young, up-and-coming
team, to one with experience and a
shot at giving the powerful Innisfail
Cyclones a run at the Mountain View
Football Conference title.
“We’ve been competitive and we
made the playoffs last year, but we are
always looking to get better and get
back into the league championship
game,” said Seafoot.
Last year, the Badgers went 3-2 in the
regular season, before getting bounced
from the playoffs by Didsbury Drag-
ons.
For Zaugg’s old squad, the peewees,
it’s business as usual.

work teaching the basics of football to
a group of kids that are strapping on
the pads for the first time.
Last year, the Badgers went 6-0
through the regular season, but were
blanked 14-0 by the Stettler Panthers
in a bone-chilling championship game.
All three Badger programs will go
through three weeks of practicing five
times a week for the rest of the month,
and will move to four days a week in
September when the regular season
rolls around.

Krebs captures gold with Canada

Krebs couldn’t have started one of the most im-
portant years of his life any better.
The 17-year-old, who is entering the season
with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey
League, was recently named to Team Canada for
the rebranded Hlinka Gretzky Cup following the
National Men’s Summer Under-18 Selection camp,
which ran July 27 to Aug. 1 at WinSport’s Markin
MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
“It’s amazing; anytime you get the chance to
represent your country at a high level is pretty
special,” said Krebs, who was one of 22 players
named to Canada’s final roster at the conclusion
of camp Aug. 1. “There are so many great players
at this camp; every time I leave, I am more moti-
vated to get better like them.”
For the first time since 1996, the tournament
was played on Canadian soil, with Red Deer and
Edmonton hosting the festivities. Historically, the
tournament is typically held in the Czech Repub-
lic and Slovakia. From now on, the tournament
will rotate each year between Canada and Europe.
Canada opened the tourney by blasting Team
Switzerland 10-0 Aug. 6 at Rogers Place. In the
shellacking, Krebs led Canada with two goals and
one helper.
Krebs factored in Canada’s 4-2 victory over
Team Slovakia the next day, when he assisted on
the opening goal by the eventual tournament-
leading scorer Alexis Lafreniere.
The Okotoks product was held off the score
sheet in Canada’s 4-3 win over Team Sweden in
the round robin finale, but was centre stage for
one of the most controversial goals in the tourna-
ment’s 27-year history.
Instant replay was never used in previous instal-
ments of the tournament, because there wasn’t
proper technology in place in Europe.
Even this year, Red Deer and the Down-
town Community Arena in Edmonton were not
equipped with the proper technology.
Canada surrendered a pair of goals in the third

Wolf at the buzzer. When the TV feed showed the
replay, it appeared as if the puck crossed the goal
line slightly after time expired. But since instant
replay was never used before in previous years

The goal stood, and Canada had a second life
in overtime.
That’s when the former Alberta Midget Hockey

da to the final.

Krebs in the finale, as they dumped Sweden 6-2
Aug. 11 to capture their 22nd U18 gold medal.

Hill headed to
water polo west coast

Juliana Hill has constantly been on the move for the past
few years, chasing her dream of becoming the best water
polo player possible. So, a move to Victoria is nothing new
for the former Strathmore High School student.
“We decided as a family that Victoria would be a pretty
cool place to live,” said Hill. “It also helps that they have
some water polo in the area.”
Moving to Vancouver Island feels like just another week-
end for Hill, who has been shipped all over North America
the past few months competing in as many water polo tour-
naments as possible.
After her U16 Edmonton Tsunami bowed out early in the
National Championship League Western Finals, she turned
her attention to the Junior Olympics in the United States.
The Junior Olympics are the pinnacle for youth water polo,
as teams from across the United States recruit players from
all over the world to participate in the event.
“The Junior Olympics are a great opportunity for scouting
and exposure, as you compete against the top teams from
America,” said Hill. “Most of the teams were full, but I got in
contact with a couple of teams that needed players, so I had
my choice of who to play with.”
Hill had her pick from the Miami Riptides from Florida
and the Chelsea Piers from Connecticut.
Ultimately, she landed with the Riptides and won the
qualification tournament while playing for the U16 and U18
programs June 7 to 10 in the U.S. Southeast Zone, which
featured teams from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
The trip with the Riptides interfered with her schedule
with Team Alberta and she missed out on tournaments in
New Zealand and California.
“I play in a lot of tournaments. Sometimes, there is sched-
uling conflicts where tournaments overlap one another or
are booked for the same weekend,” said Hill. “If they do, I
make sure to call both coaches and figure out which tourna-
ment would be the best fit for myself. I always want to play
on the best teams and against the best players out there. It
just sucks sometimes to have to turn down games with some
teams.”
The Riptides appreciated her commitment and her skills
as a whole set that they invited her to a tournament in No-
vember and the International Tournament next February,
both in Miami.
Until then, Hill has mixed in some cross training into her
workout regime, as she played some volleyball and worked
out with the Calgary Rowing Club this past summer.
Now on the Island, Victoria was supposed to have its own
NCL team, but the club out of Saanich couldn’t get enough
commitment from other players, and will now be a high per-
formance club that hosted at the end of June and will host

Obituary
DAYE, R. Wayne
R. Wayne Daye passed away peace-
fully at the age of 76 on July 28, 2018
at home near Strathmore, Alberta.
Wayne was born Dec. 24, 1941 in
Cornwall, Ont., an early and blessed Christmas gift
for his parents Dorothy and R. Earl Daye. Wayne spent
much of his childhood hunting and fishing with his
idol, his grandfather, who taught him the best ways to
humanely bag a deer and land a fish. After graduating
high school, Wayne entered RCMP depot in Regina,
and was posted in various communities in Alberta,
including Coutts, Lethbridge, Cardston, Medicine Hat,
Red Deer, Edmonton and lastly Strathmore, where
he retired in 1983. Wayne loved the cowboy and
ranching way of life, and he quickly joined on with
Livestock Identification Services as a brand inspector
and field supervisor. Upon retiring for a second time,
Wayne and his wife Carol, who he married in 1964 in
Lethbridge, enjoyed camping and visiting friends and
troop mates all around Canada and into the U.S. in
their fifth-wheel trailer. Wayne was an accomplished
leatherworker, building saddles and saddlebags, and
other leather products for the ranching industry.
Wayne is survived by the love of his life, wife Carol
(nee Popp); his daughter Andrea and her twins Elijah
and Atticus and their father Paul Toutant; and his son
R. Mark, wife Kerri and son Ben. He is also survived
by his mother Dorothy, his brother Brian (Ann) and
his sister Linda, his sister-in-law June, and numerous
nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his
father R. Earl, two brothers-in-law and one nephew.
A private service and interment was held August
9, 2018. Friends are invited to join the family at a
