60x60 Secs
Opens London June 2008
Available for exhibition July 2008 onwards
“motiroti actively engages individuals and communities with place and context. Translating these
engagements into works of beauty, created as a result of the agency of the participants…. a form of radical
art for the modern consumer age”. Zayd Minty, Cultural Producer and Curator
60x60 Secs is the first project of motiroti’s new three-year arts programme 360°Britain India Pakistan.
60x60 Secs comprises sixty one-minute films from sixty artists – 20 each from Britain, India and Pakistan.
Both established and emerging artists, working in a variety of mediums and spanning a wide age range
present their unique views on identity in an age of globalisation.
60x60 Secs looks beyond media, political or religious definitions to unravel complex identities and stories,
and in the telling to contribute and redefine cultures that are evolving.
The sixty films are available as an immersive installation consisting of eight 42-inch screens.
Fee: negotiable
“motiroti is one of the few arts organisations truly to stretch between international cutting edge work and
the lives of people in their own communities…. If only more arts had this breadth of vision.” Jenny Edwards,
CEO Homeless Link

360° Britain India Pakistan
A three-year programme of cultural explorations: 2007 - 2010
Award winning arts organisation motiroti launches a pioneering arts programme that crosses
geographical, linguistic, racial and religious divides to explore notions of ‘home and beyond’ in
partnership with local, national and international cultural institutions.
“Born in India, raised in Pakistan and now living in Britain, I refute singular and simplistic definitions. I
learn from the creative plenitude offered by displacement. By inviting others to explore commonality and
difference through art, we open new spaces for engagement.”
Ali Zaidi, Artistic Director motiroti
Nila Madhab Panda and Shalalae Jamil - producer/artists specialising in new media from India and
Pakistan - are appointed as Creative Associates to act as collaborators, curators and mentors.
Sixty films, several international artists’ residencies and a new collaborative work will bring artists together,
to excite imaginations and explore the role that art can play in shaping communication and insight, across
boundaries of culture and geography.
60x60 Secs
Production 2007/8
Opening Britain - June 2008;
Launch in Pakistan & India September 2008
Touring June 2008 - end 2009
The first project of this programme consists of sixty one-minute films commissioned by motiroti via open
submission. Established and emerging artists from the South Asian Diaspora - sixty artists, 20 each from
Britain, India and Pakistan - present sixty unique views on identity in an age of globalisation. 60x60 Secs
looks beyond media, political or religious definitions to unravel complex identities and stories, and in the
telling, contributes to redefine cultures that are evolving.
60x60 Secs will be launched in Britain, published on the web and premiered in India and Pakistan
simultaneously. Pushing the boundaries of where work can be seen, audiences will encounter these films
in conventional as well as unconventional settings: TV, digital arts and film festivals, art galleries, cinemas,
public spaces and in-flight entertainment. In India and Pakistan we are also targeting the young new
audiences found within the burgeoning urban café culture, by screening the works within shopping malls,
cafes and restaurants.
360°ARL Arts-Residency Lab
The second project of the programme consists of three dynamic residencies which will bring artists from
Britain, India and Pakistan together - with academics, sociologists, economists and other communities of
interest - to illuminate themes of ‘home and beyond’. Hosted in all three countries, these ARL exchanges
will encourage the participants to push the boundaries of their practice by questioning, challenging and
learning from each other’s visions, beliefs and methodologies.
New Collaboration
Opening Winter 2010
During the third project of the programme motiroti will harness the ideas generated through ARL to
create a new collaborative work combining digital technology, new media and live interventions. The final
works will tour internationally and become a catalyst to further connectivity between artists, communities,
countries and continents. The tour will be accompanied by a publication charting the development of 360°.

Creative Team
Zaidi leads the artistic vision of motiroti, which he co-founded with Keith Khan in 1996.
Apart from producing films and experimenting with techniques within the medium of audio-visual, the
periphery of Madhab’s career extends to sharing knowledge and experience with fellow and aspiring
filmmakers. He is actively involved as an advisor and advocates the role of audio-visual communication by
developing media strategies with organisations like the UN, Ministry of Home Affairs, The World Bank, and
the Governments of Rajasthan and Orissa.
Shalalae graduated from Bennington College, Vermont and School of the Art Institute of Chicago,
concentrating on photography, film, video and new media. While in the USA, she curated screenings
and exhibitions that focused primarily on the South Asian diasporic experience. Following completion of
her M.F.A and return to Pakistan, she is currently teaching at Karachi University, Beaconhouse National
University, and has been one of the central organisers of Shanaakht (The Identity Project) launched by the
newly formed Citizens Archive of Pakistan.
