Some of you are aware that we have an active garden on the

Nurse’s Notes
Mindfulness: It is not what
you might think it is (or
isn’t).
To many folks meditation
practice is rarely thought of or
Nurse’s Notes even less, actually done.
Many might think of it as
some strange practice as
lying face down on a rug chanting in Sanskrit. No,
meditation is as simple as sitting still for just a few
minutes, and with calming breath, allowing the mind to
rest in quiet and awareness.
Mindfulness is an ancient practice. Often it is associated
with Buddhism but its importance has nothing to do with
Buddhism. It has everything to do with waking up and
living in harmony with oneself and with the world. It has
to do with examining who we are, with questioning our
view of the world and our place in it, and with cultivating
appreciation for the fullness of each moment we are
alive.
Meditation helps us wake up from the sleep of
automaticity and unconsciousness. Think of mindfulness
as the art of conscious living. The most important point
is to be yourself and not try to become anything that you
are not already.
Mindfulness practice will not conflict with any religious
beliefs or practice or any scientific understandings, nor is
it trying to sell anything, especially not a new belief
system or ideology. In fact mindfulness practice can
enhance contemplation or prayer time and can be a way
for deeper insight into faith practice. Mindfulness is a
way to quiet the mind so as to make it work better toward
problem solving, decision making, mental health and

physical health. It is grounded in medical and scientific
facts that have shown that mindfulness stress reduction
practice lowers blood pressure, harmful stress
hormones, and enhances the built in calming and
healing mechanisms of the body.
Mindfulness practice has to do with stopping: stopping
the mind-cluttering busyness of daily life. Mindfulness
asks us to simply stop and be present. So often we run
around Doing; mindfulness asks us to stop long enough
to simply Be; to connect with our true self.
Try this: Sit down. Allow yourself to settle comfortably in
your chair. With deep calming breath open yourself to
this moment. Let go into full awareness of this present
moment. For one minute, for five or twenty-five minutes
for as long as you can, with breath focus on this one
moment allowing your mind to relax into calmness.
Allow this moment to be exactly as it is, and allow
yourself to be exactly as you are. Breathe and go into
the next moment, into the next breath. Notice how you
feel. Notice what awareness comes to you mind.
As you sit in awareness bring your attention to the
Source of Life, the sacred universal breath of God.
Psalm 46: 10 asks us “ to be still and know God”; so
with breath be still; be still and know; be still.
Prayer: Breath of God, open us to Sacred Presence. As
we focus on the wonder of our physical breath let us also
feel the wave of Sacred Breath as it nourishes our souls.
May it inspire us to acts of compassion, loving-kindness
and care toward ourselves and toward others. Amen

Daily Dying: The Gateway to Living Well

The Palliative Care Institute is partnering with the Turtle Haven Community to bring Dr. Ravi
Ranvindra to Bellingham.
Dr. Ravi Ravindra marries deep studies in both science and comparative religions to explore
important questions of our age. In this community conversation, he will help us explore how holding
an understanding of our own mortality can enrich our living.
Dr. Ravindra’s spiritual search has led him to the teachings of J. Krishnamurti, G. I. Gurdjieff, Zen, Yoga, and a deep
immersion in the mystical teachings of the Indian and Christian classical traditions. He is the author of several books on
religion, science, mysticism, and spirituality, including Whispers from the Other Shore: Spiritual Search--East and West,
and Science and the Sacred: Eternal Wisdom in a Changing World.
Using these lenses, Dr. Ravindra will help us explore the questions that facing our own mortality brings to the surface,
both personally and culturally.  Mainstream American culture has a paradoxical relationship with dying.

Brigade is Still at
Work
Our dedicated quilters,
sewers, crocheters,
and knitters are still
hard at work, making blankets for local
children in transitional situations. (e.g.
they are in the foster care program, either
awaiting placement or settling into their
“new” home)
We have learned that it is a great comfort
to children in such a situation to have
something that is theirs to have, hold,
and take with them as they move from
one location to the next. A blanket not
only fills that need, it provides warmth on
our cool nights.
If you would like to participate in this
ministry, we need blankets for children
newborn to age 18, quilts, fleece, or
flannel. Depending upon size and warmth
factor, they will either be delivered to
Skookum Kids (younger children and all
blanket types) or Blues Skies for children
(all ages and warmer blankets).
Help kids in the community succeed in
their school year by donating backpacks!
Many school districts in the area now provide
students with
supplies so we are
focusing on
providing
backpacks to all
the school districts
for children in
need. Supplies will
still be accepted
and welcome, as
are monetary
donations which will be used to pay activity fees for
students and purchase any supplies that are still
needed.
Most needed supplies include larger sized and
sturdy backpacks, wide-tipped markers, colored
pencils, wide-ruled notebook paper, scissors, pencil
sharpeners, and scientific calculators.
Donate to Opportunity Council today!
A box for supplies is also available in the fellowship
hall. Donations will be delivered to Opportunity
Council in early September.

World Outreach Community Outreach

A Family Promise Update

The first week of hosting our Family Promise guests blossomed into a
grand adventure. When another church in the community found they
were unable to host, Family Promise facilitators scrambled to find
accommodations and approached First Christian with their plea:
“Could you possibly host for two weeks, rather than one?”
So, we scrambled. With our huge rummage sale taking place the day
before, we quickly emptied our “bedrooms,” hauled away unsold
merchandise, and set up a living room wherein families can relax,
study, play, and watch movies.
Thanks to all of you who helped in the necessary cleaning, repairing, furniture moving that was required prior to the
families’ arrival. Thanks to all of you who helped in providing dinner and company for them in the evenings, security
detail for them each night, breakfast each morning, and helped with their lunch prep for the following days. Thank you to
those of you who have provided bedding and a warm, welcoming place for these families to stay. Thank you for being
the church that you are and extending God’s love to those in need.

A Report from Pride

Many thanks go to Bruce Radtke, Linda Heyne, and Blair Whitney for setting up and hosting our church table at this
year’s Pride Festival. It is not an easy task to haul, arrange, and set up all that stuff (or to clean it all up and bring it
“home” when all is said and done), so kudos to this faithful crew for doing so.
Thank you, also, to Bruce, who straightened out the seemingly inevitable confusion festival coordinators had between
our congregation and First Congregational and for sharing the following:
“I brought some Hershey's kisses (who could say no to a kiss?) which were well-received, and then I also handed out
(pro-actively) the candy in wrappers you provided. Two things struck me: Several people stopped by to thank us for the
message "God loves everybody," a contrast to what we were told was the message of some folks on sidewalks
denouncing sinful living. Those who thanked us may well be church members or not, maybe never visiting our
congregation, but at least our message resonated with them. Linda commented on how she heard that comment
frequently, too.  Secondly, it struck me that many of the folks walking by our table seemed to be satisfied with their
bodies, not buying the ads that promote only good-looking, slim people.  They seemed happy either to be LGBTQ folks
at various stages of their evolving lives or supporters not afraid to speak up.”
May God bless each of these volunteers and the people whose lives they touched that day. God loves EVERYONE!

We Continue to Work for Justice

Bruce Radtke also reports that the effort to get signatures on 29 April 2018 was worthwhile:
17 signatures on petition asking released Palestinian unjustly detained; 17 signatures on petition for 10 Turkish students
unjustly detained; 15 signatures for 2 Ukranians sentenced by Russian military courts;
15 signatures for 4 Central American undocumented fathers separated from their children and detained;
15 signatures in opposition to the Muslim ban. Signatures opposing hunger and its causes were as follows: 17 for 
Senator Murray, 16 for Senator Cantwell, 16 for Rep. Larsen, and 16 for Rep. DelBene.

moving toward death from the moment of our birth, we turn away from the intimacy of considering our own dying or the
death of those we love.

Beginning Sunday, September 9, we’ll be starting a new thing
in Children’s Church. We’re going to read the WHOLE Bible!
The Spark Story Bible, that is. We’ll start with the story of
creation, in Genesis and work our way through the Hebrew
Scriptures. Adapting our journey to accommodate Easter, Advent,
Christmas and all Holy Days, we will continue on until we reach
the final story, with Paul writing to the church in Philippi.
There are 46 Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) stories and
104 New Testament stories in the Spark Story Bible, so this
journey will take us a good, long while. But, we know it will be
a good journey for our children. Please pray with us. Learn
with us. And, if you like, read along with us. But, you get to use
your grown-up Bible!
May God’s Spirit of Wisdom be with you,

Rescuers!
After a plea for $2,200.00 to pay for repairs to our
riding mower, we’ve had some Valiant Rescuers
come forward to pay all but $400 of the balance
owing. And in case you haven’t noticed, our lawn
and landscape, though brown from the weather,
are in the best shape ever! Thanks to ALL who
help in the best ways they can. Keep up the
good work; I don’t know what our church would
do without you!
Hot Diggity Dog!
The end of August marks a milestone in the
ending of Part I in a long journey. That’s the
Page Family’s journey with Darleen’s
chemotherapy in Seattle. It all began with a
diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in March, and has
meant a trip every two weeks for treatment. So
many of you faithful friends have prayed, sent
cards, or called to support us that we want to
show a token of our thanks to all of you in just a
small way.
Sunday, Sept. 2, fellowship time after worship will
feature hot dogs, baked beans, and salad,
provided for your “dining pleasure”, (as they say
in the hospitality business).
The next step in the journey for us is surgery to
remove the now-shrunken tumor, probably in late
Sept. or early Oct. We take things one day at a
time, but are surely looking forward to “moving
on” from where we’ve been on this journey so far.
We can’t thank you enough for all your prayers
and good wishes!
