M4009 Advanced Materials for Manufacturing

Homework #1
Due date: Aug/16/ 2018

1. Briefly cite the main differences among ionic and covalent bonding.

2. What type(s) of bonding would be expected for each of the following materials: solid
xenon, calcium fluoride (CaF2), bronze, cadmium telluride (CdTe), rubber, and
tungsten?

3. Describe the covalent bonding process between a pair of hydrogen atoms. What is the
driving energy for the formation o a diatomic molecule.

4. List the number of atoms bonded to a C atom that exhibits sp3, sp2 and sp
hybridization. For each, give the geometrical arrangement of the atoms in the
molecule.

5. Which of these elements are unlikely to form covalent bonds: S, H, K, Ar, Si? Explain
your choices.
