Advisor Assignment
Advisors will:
! Assist student in defining and developing realistic educational goals
! Communicate the College’s degree requirements, policies, and procedures
! Listen carefully to questions and concerns
! Discuss student’s academic performance and its impact on future goals
! Provide student with accurate information and follow-up if any questions are
left unanswered
! Discuss the relationship between academic preparation and the world of work
Students will:
! Keep lines of communication open
! Follow through on suggested actions, resources, or referrals
! Accept responsibility for academic decisions and performance, and accept the
challenge that college coursework provides
! Come prepared to meetings with advising checklists, questions and some
initial research done about areas of inquiry
! Become knowledgeable about college programs, policies and procedures
! Check HAWKMail and/or D2L Brightspace on a regular basis
! Keep phone number and mailing address up-to-date
! Create short and long term DAPPS goals
Task 1: Schedule an appointment
Due: Week 3 Points: 20
1. Find your advising check sheet from New Student Orientation or print one from
hacc.edu (Program Search) and attach/include the advising check sheet to
this assignment.
If you are changing your major, you will need to print a new advising check sheet
for your desired major and attach that check sheet to this assignment.
3. Determine your timeline for graduation. This will impact the number of classes
you should take each semester, as well as whether you should consider taking
coursework in the summer.
5. Decide, in advance, what you want to talk about with your advisor. Consider
what information is most important to discuss during your meeting. If you are
not sure what to talk about, you might consider some of these questions/
discussion points. Check all that apply:
1. With your advisor, plan your classes for at least next semester. You may choose
to map out more semesters if you’d like.
2. Talk to your advisor about any questions or concerns you have from your notes
in Task 2.
Inform your advisor of any changes that would impact your academic
plans (family, work, limitation in physical abilities, criminal record, etc.).
Ask your advisor any questions you may have about your attached
advising check sheet.
3. Discuss your progress in the courses you are currently taking. Inform your
advisor if you are off course.
4. Obtain your new advising code (if applicable) and record here:

email verification that you spoke:
Prepare for registration by identifying the specific sections of the courses you will take
in the chart below and/or attach your existing plan. The schedule of classes can be
found under “Class Schedules” on hacc.edu.
If you will not be here next semester, attach a statement indicating the
reason(s) and explain what you will doing instead that will keep you on the
pathway to meeting your educational/career goals.
4. Renew your FAFSA (if applicable) by April 15 each year using your taxes from
the prior year.
5. Consult the Welcome Center for more information about the Payment Plan (if
applicable).
