reflection.!!This!past!year!has!been!a!good!year.!!We!had!some!
deputy
minor!achievements,!and!some!promising!gains.! message:
The!new!Online!initiative!that!was!launched!here!in!New!York,!
has!been!very!successful.!!At!the!June!meeting!of!State!Deputies,! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I!was!informed!that!we!were!in!4th!Place!Order!wide!in!Online! !
members,!and!that!all!4!States!ahead!of!us!had!all!launched! !
before!us.!!I!am!very!excited!about!the!potential!of!this!excellent!

recruitment!tool!and!look!forward!to!bringing!even!more!
members!into!our!Honored!order.! !

the!only!highlight,!though!we!should!be!proud!to!have!a!new! !

council!in!the!seat!of!the!Brooklyn!Diocese.!!What!makes!me! !!!!!!!!!!!!
most!proud!is!that!this!council!will!bear!the!name!of!our!beloved! !
Former!Supreme!Chaplain,!and!a!true!friend!of!the!Knights!of!
Columbus,!Bishop!Thomas!V.!Daily.!!There!is!one!other!
distinction!with!this!council.!!It!will!also!bear!the!Number!17000!a!
!!!!!!!!!!!!
truly!landmark!number!in!our!order.!!So,!I!applaud!our!newest!
council,!The!Thomas!V.!Daily!Council!#!17000,!and!welcome!them! !!!!!!
to!our!order.!

Another!exciting!happening!is!the!roll!out!of!our!new!program!model,!“Faith!in!Action”.!!While!all!
the!details!are!not!yet!readily!available,!I!can!assure!you!that!this!will!be!good!for!the!local!
councils,!and!I!believe!it!will!be!easier!for!councils!to!attain!the!Columbian!Award.!There!will!be!
more!details!to!follow.!

On!a!personal!note,!I!would!like!to!take!this!moment!to!thank!everyone!who!reached!out!to!me,!
and!my!family!as!we!mourned!the!loss!of!one!of!my!younger!brothers,!Danny!Latham.!!Dan!was!
not!a!member,!but!he!was!always!there!helping!at!fundraisers!and!helping!us!do!our!great!
works.!!So!again,!thank!you!to!all!who!reached!out.!!

In!closing,!let!us!remember!that!THIS!is!the!beginning!of!a!new!Columbian!year.!!We!must!always!
remember!that!we!are!Knights!12!MONTHS!of!the!year,!and!not!just!10.!!We!can!not!afford!to!

Special! Olympics,! membership! and! degrees,! food! drives! and! church! drives,! Toys! for! Tots,!
giving! a! witness! to! the! gift! of! life! and! support! of! the! Sisters! of! Life,! support! of! Catholic!
Education,!and!the!list!goes!on.!!!

However,!while!we!have!looked!to!an!end,!we!also!look!to!new!beginnings!!!We!begin!a!new!
fraternal!year!and!we!once!again!hit!the!ground!running!to!achieve!all!we!have!done!in!the!

I'am'pleased'to'announce!that!over!the!last!year:!
• The!NY'State'Council'recruited'2634'new'members'for'2017T18,'which!was!85.0%!of!
our!state!recruitment!goal!for!the!year!and!a!12%'increase.!'
• Northern,'WestchesterTPutnam'and'Kings'Conferences!each!exceeded'their'
recruitment'goals!
• Hudson'Valley,'Finger'Lakes'and'Nassau'Conferences!each!exceeded'80'%'of'their'
recruitment'goals
• The!NY'State'Council'had'1215'members'withdraw'or'suspended,'which!is!a!15%!
reduction'
• The!NY'State'Council'had'1419'net'increase'in'membership,'which!is!a!whopping!
54%'increase'
• 84 councils met their Membership Goal for Star Council
• up 17% from the 72 doing so last year!
• 38 of!these!councils!also!met!their!Insurance'Goal!for!Star!Council!!''
• 49!councils!met!their!10%!Membership!Growth!Goal!for!NYS!Circle!of!Honor!!!!

 MEMBERSHIP RETENTION
It!was!an!interesting!fraternal!year!for!a!lot!of!reasons.!Online!enrollment!is!probably!the!
major!initiative!started!in!New!York!State!and!it!is!wonderful!tool!towards!helping!us!get!
more!members!into!our!councils.!

This!year,!we!started!to!be!advised!of!members!who!wish!to!withdraw!from!the!Order.!
Some!of!them!are!fairly!non!descript!while!others!are!quite!specific,!or!seem!to!be.!By!that!I!
mean,!we!have!seen!a!few!times,!“The!Knights!is!not!what!I!thought!it!would!be”.!Hmm.!My!
first!reaction!was!“!I!wonder!what!he!thought!it!was?”!I!never!really!get!an!answer!to!that.!!
So,!I!wonder!if!the!member!thought!it!was!more!of!a!social!club!and!when!he!saw!the!
religious!activities!it!made!him!uncomfortable,!or!did!he!think!it!was!just!the!opposite?!!Or!
was!something!else!bothering!him?!I!have!a!few!examples!of!reasons!given!and!what!I!
suspect!the!real!reasons!were.!

Whatever!the!reasons,!it!should!be!no!surprise!to!a!council!when!such!a!request!comes!!

through.!!In!some!cases,!it!is!clear!that!the!members!are!being!directed!to!withdraw.!It!is!
evident!when!multiple!withdrawal!requests!come!from!the!same!council,!which!is!often!the!
case.!When!I!see!these!situations,!I!hope!that!every!effort!was!made!to!determine!the!real!
reason!a!member!wants!to!quit!and!something!was!done!to!try!to!retain!him.!

Even!before!that,!I!hope!that!each!member!or!at!least!each!new!member!has!a!‘buddy’!in!
his!council!to!help!him!understand!some!of!the!things!we!do!and!why!we!do!them.!That!
‘buddy’!can!also!serve!as!a!sounding!board!for!issues…,!That’s!my!year!end!sermon.!

I!will!take!this!opportunity!to!thank!the!minor!conference!coordinators!who!helped!me!
during!the!year!as!well!as!the!district!deputies!I!was!able!to!interact!with.!I!look!forward!to!
the!second!year!as!well.!

SAFE ENVIRONMENT COMPLIANCE
Worthy Grand Knight,
This letter addresses Safe Environment Program requirements for the 2018-2019
Fraternal Year. Compliance with the requirements of the Knights of Columbus Safe
Environment Program in your jurisdiction must be driven from the top down and
depends on your dedication as State Deputy. The point of the program is to ensure
that brother Knights are trained to safeguard children and other vulnerable persons
by recognizing the signs of possible abuse. Here are the requirements for the 2018-
2019 Fraternal Year. All members holding these roles are required to become
compliant within thirty (30) days of email notification from Praesidium.

FORM SUBMISSION DEADLINES

To ensure that all members holding these roles receive their email invitations to
complete the requirements, it is
critical that each of the required forms are completed and submitted according to the
following deadlines:
July 1 - Report of Officers Chosen for Term
August 1 - Service Program Personnel Report
August 1 - Columbian Squires Officers and Chairmen

NOTIFICATIONS
Praesidium, the Order's safe environment partner, uses member email addresses to
send notifications. For members to receive their email invitations, email addresses

must be provided and accurate. If members do not receive an email from Praesidium

by September 1st, it may be that they either do not have an email on file with the
Knights of Columbus or their council has not yet updated its officer report forms to
indicate members' new role assignments. Members should not forget to look for
email notifications from Praesidium in their inbox or spam folder.

The email invitations provide usernames and passwords necessary to complete the
required training and the link to provide background check authorization (when
applicable). Email notifications are unique to each recipient and cannot be forwarded
or used by another member. The time-sensitive notifications require the
recipient to complete training and background check authorization within
30 days of receipt of the email. There are no costs to members to comply
with these requirements. For more information, please visit www.kofc.org/safe or
the Officer Desk Reference in Officers Online.
CONSEQUENCES:
COUNCIL DIRECTORS - If members in Director roles have not satisfied their
requirements within 30 days of notification, they will be removed from their position.

Grand Knights will be required to appoint a different member who will go through the
same process.

COUNSELORS- If members in Chief Counselor and Adult Counselor roles

have not satisfied their requirements within 30 days of notification they will
also be removed. Grand Knights will be required to appoint a different
member who will go through the same process.

IMPORTANT: Any Columbian Squires Circles not fully compliant by

September 30, 2018 will be permanently dissolved.

To maintain a compliant Columbian Squires Circle the following conditions must be

met:
• Maintain a minimum of ten {10) squires in the program throughout the entire
fraternal year
• Maintain a minimum of two fully compliant counselors throughout the entire
fraternal year
• Maintain a minimum ratio of one compliant counselor per ten (10) squires
throughout the entire fraternal year

Catholic Education is very important for the future of the Catholic
Church. Our NYS Knights of Columbus Council is having a Fundraiser for
Catholic Education with the NY Mets on Friday night September 7, 2018 at Citi
Field.
1) The NY Mets will be presenting the NY Knights of Columbus with their
Spirit Award at home plate right before the game.
2) There will be a PSA before the Spirit Award about the Knights of
Columbus and the 3 recipients of our fundraiser; Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation,
Futures in Education and the Inner-City Scholarship Fund.!
3) We will have a Honorary 1st Pitch right before the Ceremonial 1st Pitch of
the game. !
4) The 4th Degree will present the Colors during the National Anthem. !
5) Also, there will be an informational table by our seats so that we can
handout information about our organizations.
6) Every ticket that is purchased from the NYS Knights of Columbus for this
game will receive a voucher for a NY Mets Hat that is displayed on the
flyer. !
7) September 7 is a Mets FREE SHIRT Friday promotion, so everyone
attending will receive a FREE SHIRT.

Most importantly for every ticket purchased from the Knights of Columbus
$10 will be donated to Catholic Education and shared by Tomorrow's Hope
Foundation (Diocese of Rockville Centre ), Futures in Education Diocese
of(Brooklyn) and Inner-City Scholarship Fund (Archdiocese of New York

and!we!did!a!Coat!Drive!and!a!40!cans!for!Lent!

On!Sunday,!July!22,!Knights!of!Columbus!from!through!out!the!Diocese!of!
Ogdensburg!participated!in!the!organization's!70th!annual!pilgrimage!to!St.!
Anne's!Shrine!in!Isle!!
LaMotte,!Vermont.!Bishop!Terry!R.!LaValley!celebrated!the!Mass!and!later!joined!
the!Knights!and!their!families!for!a!picnic!lunch.!Many!attended!Benediction!of!
the!Blessed!Sacrament!as!part!of!the!event.!
!
Dedicated!to!St.!Anne,!the!mother!of!Mary,!the!Shrine's!religious!history!dates!to!
1666!when!the!French!erected!a!fort!and!chapel!on!the!beautiful!site!bordering!
Lake!Champlain.!The!chapel!was!blessed!in!1893!and!a!beautiful!statue!of!
St.!Anne!was!erected.!Later!in!1893!nearly!2,000!people!attended!the!Shrine's!
first!organized!pilgrimage!with!several!people!traveling!to!the!pilgrimage!by!
steamboat.!
Late!Past!Grand!Knight!Earl!Carter!of!Danemora!Council!#!2166!originated!the!
pilgrimage!as!a!Council!program!in!1949.!It!was!sponsored!as!!a!New!York!State!
Council!event!in!1958.!

Traditionally! this! night! is! set! aside! for! all! the! Clergy! in! the! area! to! get! together! with! the!
Council,!and!the!community.!Members!of!the!Clergy!give!some!background!information!on!
themselves!and!the!Parish/Church!they!represent.!!

The!Council!presents!each!of!the!Clergy!with!a!gift!and!refreshments!are!served.!

A Village of Clayton lady was evicted from The French Elder Cottages senior
housing while she was in the hospital. All of her belonging were placed on the
curb. Fortunately, as she sat with her belongings, a member of Council # 350
drove by, and stopped to find out what happened. After some phone calls a
number of Knights responded. A U-Haul Truck was rented, and her belongings
were placed inside.
One of the Knights took her into his home, getting her off the street.
A storage unit was rented, and 10 Knights along with 4 additional Community
Members unloaded the truck into the storage unit. Members of the Knights of
Columbus Thousand Islands Council # 350 came together, loaded and unloaded
all her belongings. They have provided her with a place to stay, financial
assistance, and most importantly they have prayed for her, showing her dignity
and respect.

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney
God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan,
You called Your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian
family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor.
Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow Your Son, Jesus Christ,
more closely, fulfilling His commandment of charity and building up His Body,
which is the Church. Let the inspiration of Your servant prompt us to greater
confidence in Your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy
and the outcast.
We humbly ask that you glorify Your servant, Father Michael J. McGivney, on
earth according to the design of Your holy will. Through his intercession, grant
the favor I now present (here make your request), through Christ our Lord. Amen.
