BASIC GREETINGS 1.1


LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the lesson, the student is expected to:

∞ Define basic greetings.


∞ Read and understand the conversations/lessons properly.
∞ Greet each other and reply to the given basic conversation questions orally.
∞ Translate the conversations/paragraph from Filipino to English and vice versa.
∞ Distinguish the difference between possessive adjectives, possessive pronouns
and subject articles.
∞ Analyze the speaking situations presented in the materials.
∞ Write conversation chunks; and
∞ Present simple conversation chunks. (Role-playing games)
∞Provide the appropriate nouns, pronouns and articles using word pool

Basic greetings are used to communicate with people bearing the manner of
respect, proper intonation, grammar and pronunciations. Thus, it reflects how do people
understand each other’s dilemma whenever they meet along the street, office, house,
schools and the like. It supplies basic information needed by the speaker or
communicator. By having the knowledge about basic greetings, the speaker or
communicator as well as the listener or person whom the communicator is talking to will
be able to answer/reply to the certain queries easily. It is also called day to day
conversation. Here are the examples:

Maganda - Beautiful/Good Gabi - Evening


Umaga - Morning Araw - Sun/Day
Tanghali - Noon Din/Rin - Also / Too
Hapon - Afternoon

ng- no equivalent in English if it is connected to adjectives which end with


vowels to modify a noun (it serves as a connector/ligature).

As a reply to greetings presented, all you have to do is add din/rin after the last
word.
Examples:
Magandang umaga Maganding umaga rin
Magandang hapon Magandang hapon din

NOTE: Use rin if the word/words presented end/s with vowel/s and din if it ends
with consonant/s.

Oral Exercise:

1. Ask the students to read the Magandang umaga to Magandang araw


orally with proper intonation.
2. Let the student/s ask his/her/their classmates or look for his/her own
partner to greet each other and wait for the response before proceeding to
the next greetings.
3. Encourage the students to greet the teacher with response from first to
last and vice versa.

Ka/Ikaw - means you, subject pronoun (Ka-usually found in the middle or in the end
of the statements/questions but never been used in the beginning while Ikaw- is used to
begin a statement/question).

Si - is a subject article used for specific name/ 1 name only (no equivalent in
English). Ex. Si Merly

Sina -used for two or more names followed by the word at which means and.

Ex. Sina Greg at George


Sina Greg, Anna, at George

Ang – is an article the which is used for specific thing and counted as one (singular
noun i.e. common nouns- father, mother, basket etc.) Ex. ang aso (the dog)

Ang mga – same thing with ang but used in plural form of common nouns. In
here the s will be dropped once used in a plural form of common nouns except
for the word/s ending with s. Ex. Prutas(friut) - ang mga prutas (the fruits)

Mabuti – Good/Fine
Hindi Mabuti – Not good/Not fine

Mabuti siya/sila/kami. She/they, we is/are fine.

Ako (I), Siya, Sila, Kayo are used to substitute a noun.


Kayo – the person who is talking to is not included. (excluded)
Kami- We, the person who is talking to is included. (included)

The words Marami and Wala could form a complete sentence that can stand alone.

Nakatira From the Tagalog root verb tira, which means live (in a certain

Pasok is the root verb of Enter. Tuloy is the root verb of Continue. Both of these
words are used to invite someone to come into the house, the office, etc.
