Coverage Planning
The number of sites is based on the coverage requirement.
We here at Hytera are in possession of computer software that can predict the
coverage from known sites. This method would be used in our evaluation to provide
customer with a reasonably good appreciation of coverage of proposed sites,
however, the result of coverage prediction is for reference purpose and a coverage
test on site will be carried out after completion of system installation as per the
requirement of tender document.
Take an example of coverage evaluation by software simulation.
The map above is customers’ required coverage area for a multi‐site DMR trunking
system.
The base station is required to be 50W. The trunking terminal is 5W portable radio.

This is the related elevation map which is the theoretical foundation for the software
simulation. In this case, the trunking system is for the Fire Brigade so that all the sites
are located in high altitude which is very good for the RF coverage.

DMR Trunking System Coverage & Traffic Capacity Planning
From all the available location of sites, we select necessary 7 sites for covering the
required area.
The MAX RF output power of DMR trunking base station is 50w, which is much larger
than portable radios (MAX 5w). As a result, the limitation for the RF communication
direction is up‐link. In order to ensure reliable communication coverage, the
coverage simulation is for portable radio up‐link.
The simulated coverage is assumed to be at street level, in light building areas. No
guarantee is given for areas densely populated with building structures.
The areas coloured Green in the coverage prediction plots indicate the portion of the
mobile radio service area that is predicted to have a level of ‐95dBm or better at 95%
area reliability, which is thought to be acceptable for voice communication.

Traffic Capacity Planning
For each site (base station), the number of channel is configured according to the
traffic capacity.
And the traffic capacity is related with the number and usage of customers.
In order to calculate the traffic load, the following information is needed:
Number Item
1 Acceptable subscriber queuing time
2 Mean Talking Time For Each Call
3 Max numbers of subscribers for each base station
4 How many calls per user per hour in the system
After knowing of these information, we can plan the number of channels for the
users.
For example, if the user number and usage is as below:
2 Mean Talking Time For Each Call 10 seconds
3 Max numbers of subscribers for each base station 400
4 How many calls per user per hour in the system 2
5 Erl 3.33
We could calculate that the total Erl for this base station is 3.33.
In this case, for this base station, the figure which describes the relationship between
the call rejection rate (queuing time>7s) and Number of traffic channels shows as
below:

From our experience of communication system, 5‐10% of call rejection rate is
normally acceptable. And the figure shows that the required traffic channel is about
5 to 6 when 5% of call rejection rate.
As a result, for each base station, we recommend to use 3‐carrier system (5 traffic
channels) for this base station.
