in Indonesia - Minimising harm, maximising benefits" Conference program and
abstract book. Community mining in Indonesia is a hidden industry. It is estimated
more than 2 million people are involved directly in small mining activities across
the nation producing gold, manganese, tin, coal, building materials and many other
materials we use in of daily lives. Currently community mining in Indonesia is
largely informal and unregulated. This is a complex issue with clear positive
social and economic befits for many communities in Indonesia, supporting the
livelihoods of millions. There are however also often significant detrimental
public health and long term environmental impacts.

This conference provides an opportunity to discuss the impacts of community mining

and to explore strategies to minimise harm and maximise the benefits in Indonesia.
The conference will bring together national and international experts from
Government, University and NGO sectors to share their understanding of Community
mining in Indonesia.

Conference aims:

The primary purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for knowledge exchange,
to facilitate sharing between a broad range of people with local, national and
international experience in community mining. The conference aims to:

1) Increase awareness and understanding of community mining activities across

Indonesia and place this form of mining in Indonesia in an international context.
2) Share research about community mining, impacts both positive and negative.
3) Promote discussion about the future of community mining activities in Indonesia.
4) Raise the profile in Indonesia of this hugely significant but poorly understood
livelihood issue.

This conference is being supported by the Australian Government (DFAT) through the
Government partnerships for Development Artisanal and small-scale mining in eastern
Indonesia project . this project is a collaboration between Charles Darwin
University (CDU), Australian National University (ANU), Universitas Haluoleo (UHO –
South East Sulawesi), Universitas Nusa Cendana (Undana – West Timor), Balai
Lingkungan Hidup Nusa Tenggara Timur (BLHD – Nusa Tenggara Timor) and the
Association for Community Miners Indonesia (APRI). This conference is the
culmination of the activities supported by the project over the last three years.
