UMTYMP ROCHESTER – Algebra I/II and Geometry/Math Analysis

Course Expectations

This handout is meant as an overview. For complete information on UMTYMP policies and
expectations, please refer to the student handbook posted to www.mathcep.umn.edu.

Behavior UMTYMP students are expected to act appropriately while on the university campus.
Classrooms are used by University of Minnesota students & instructors all day long, and
many classes occur at the same time as UMTYMP. Do NOT enter any classroom until it is
empty. When waiting or taking a break in the hallways, you are expected to be quiet and
respectful of other students who are still in class. No running, littering, or property damage
will be tolerated.

Supplies Arrive prepared for class with your textbook, folder, notebook, pencils, and any necessary
calculators & drawing materials. Bring whatever items will keep you most organized and be
sure to keep all your UMTYMP assignments for future study. Classrooms do not have pencil
sharpeners, so either bring your own or choose a mechanical pencil. For graphing
calculators, any in the TI-80 series will work. (TI-83, TI-84, TI-89)

Grading Your homework assignments and exams are graded by your instructor. Your final grade will
be: 45% homework, 45% exams, 10% class participation. You can track your overall
percentage throughout the semester by visiting the Moodle website. You will be given login
and password information for Moodle on the first day of class. At the end of the semester,
you will receive:
95-100% A+
90-94.9% A
85-89.9% A-
80-84.9% B+
75-79.9% B
70-74.9% B-
Below 70% withdraw
** Grade Privacy: At the University of Minnesota, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects
your grade information from being seen by anyone else. UMTYMP is only able to give you your grades
through the secure student site (Moodle), by paper mail, or in person. UMTYMP is not allowed to give out
grades over the phone or by email. **

Class Participation Ten percent of your final grade is class participation. It is expected that you attend all
classes. It is also expected that you are actively involved and paying attention during
class time. When group work occurs, you should work as a helpful member of your
team. The majority of students will receive an 85-90 (out of 100) on class
participation.

Absence If you are sick or will be absent from UMTYMP class, you must report that to the UMTYMP
office prior to your absence. Contact Jered Bright (brigh042@r.umn.edu or 507-258-8105)
or the MathCEP Office (mathcep@umn.edu or 612-625-2861). Emailing your instructor is
also encouraged, but not required.
** Please read the homework and exam policies for further details on absence. **
Homework Homework is a major component of a student’s work in UMTYMP. Successful completion of
all assigned homework is vital to maintaining a good grade in UMTYMP. Students receive a
class syllabus at the beginning of each semester listing assigned homework. If any changes
are made to the syllabus, students are handed a revised version in class, and the new
syllabus is posted to the course Moodle website.

• All assigned homework is due at the beginning of class on its due date. Homework
handed in after class has begun will be considered late.

• If student will miss a class for a pre-approved absence, their homework is still due
according to the due date on the syllabus. Students must plan ahead. They should
submit their homework in ONE of the following ways.
1) Hand it in a week early. It should be given directly to the Instructor.
2) Send it to class on the due date with a classmate who can turn it in on their behalf.
3) Mail it to the UMTYMP Liaison. It will be considered on time as long as the
postmarked by the day after its due date. It should be mailed to:
University of Minnesota Rochester
Jered Bright
111 South Broadway Suite 300
Rochester, MN 55904
4) If the above methods are not possible, you may scan & email homework to the
UMTYMP Liaison at brigh042@r.umn.edu. Please note that this is NOT the
preferred method, as scans can be very difficult to read. It is your responsibility to
ensure that your scanned homework is complete and very legible. If it can’t be
read, it can’t be graded. Do NOT send photographs. Scanned homework is still
due by the beginning of class on its due date.
5) Please do NOT duplicate homework or send it in multiple ways. Having several
copies of a student’s homework can lead to confusion and mis-grading.

• Exceptions for late homework can be made when there is a family emergency or a
student illness accompanied by a doctor’s note. Please contact the UMTYMP office
directly if this situation occurs. (mathcep@umn.edu, 612-625-2861)

• Unexcused, late homework is subject to the following policy:

Students who turn in homework one week late, will have it graded at 50% off. Any
homework submitted more than one week late, will receive a grade value of zero. All
homework scores count towards a student’s final grade.

WeBWorK Each week, part of your homework will be submitted online through WeBWorK. To avoid
internet connectivity issues, remember to start your WeBWorK early. It is a computerized
system that will open and close at specific times. If you have technical problems with
WeBWorK (i.e. the system is not working/responding slow), click the “Get Technical Help”
button at the bottom of each WeBWorK page. If you have a question about how to do a
problem, email your instructor directly. If you have forgotten your password or will be
absent and need a session opened early, contact the UMTYMP office.

Exams Students are expected to take their exams on their scheduled days. Exam days are listed on
the class calendar you receive at the beginning of each semester. Students who will miss an
exam due to a conflict MUST take it ahead of time. Contact the UMTYMP office at least 2
weeks in advance to schedule your alternate exam time. (mathcep@umn.edu, 612-625-
2861) Exceptions can be made for family emergencies or student illness. A student who
misses an exam for illness will be required to provide a doctor’s note.

Homework Help If you would like additional help on homework, you can attend homework help days.
These occur on some Tuesdays in University Square #382. Please check your class
calendar for dates. During these sessions, a teaching assistant will be present to
assist with your questions. Come prepared with your textbook and complete most of
your assignment before arriving. These days will be most beneficial if you know
ahead of time what is unclear to you.

Contacting Your Instructors UMTYMP is unlike your traditional classes. You will only see your instructor
once a week. If you have questions regarding homework when not in class,
you will need to email them. Please allow adequate time for your instructor
and teaching assistant to respond. This may take up to a day, so ask your
questions early and be as specific as possible. (If you simply say, “I don’t
understand question #14.” It may take several emails to get you a good
answer. Instead state your specific problems and what solutions you have
attempted thus far.)

Academic Honesty The UMTYMP program adheres to the University of Minnesota’s scholastic
dishonesty policy.
“Scholastic dishonesty means plagiarizing; cheating on assignments or examinations; engaging in
unauthorized collaboration on academic work; taking, acquiring, or using test materials without
faculty permission; submitting false or incomplete records of academic achievement; acting alone or
in cooperation with another to falsify records or to obtain dishonestly grades, honors, awards, or
professional endorsement; altering, forging, or misusing a University academic record; or fabricating
or falsifying data, research procedures, or data analysis.”
We realize that our expectations are different than some students are accustomed
to, and will work with students to learn correct behavior and give second chances as
appropriate. However, students who engage in misconduct will generally receive
scores of zero on homework problems, entire homework assignments, or exams.
Students who repeatedly show this behavior will not be allowed to continue in
UMTYMP. A complete handout regarding academic honesty, including examples of
appropriate behavior, will be given to students on the first day of class.
