QUEEN MARY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Promoting Good Campus Relations, fostering shared values and preventing violent
extremism in Universities and Higher Education Colleges

Summary

This document from the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) updates a
previous report issued in 2006. It has been reissued “to reiterate the need to promote shared
values and foster cohesion in our student populations and to highlight the clear role that
universities have in creating spaces for free and open debate to challenge violent extremism”.

SSC is asked to consider the key objectives in the document and the issues raised by each.
What further actions should the College consider taking in response to this guidance from the
DIUS?

QUEEN MARY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Promoting Good Campus Relations, fostering shared values and preventing violent
extremism in Universities and Higher Education Colleges

1. Introduction

1.1 The report attached at Appendix 1 contains a number of key objectives and the
issues raised by them. These have been drawn out from the main document and
appear in tabulated form in Appendix 2 for ease of reference.

2. Further Steps

2.1 The recent publication of the updated document has not allowed sufficient time to
coordinate a response in the College.

2.2 Members of the Committee are asked to consider their initial reaction to the
overall report and the issues being raised.

2.3 It is recommended that a consultation exercise is organised by the Director of

Student Services to draw together current policies and practices in the College
together with any recommendations for further consideration. The draft response
would be brought to the next meeting of the Committee.
