h) Earth System Science (ESS) program
Earth System Science welcomes young inquisitive minds to join us through our Ph.D. program
in exploring and understanding the endlessly complex and interesting phenomena that
govern Earth’s systems. Earth System Science focuses on our understanding of the
interdependence and interconnectedness of Earth’s fundamental systems from the
lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and BIOsphere through to chemical, physical, and
BIOlogical systems. These systems are all viewed in the context of dynamic processes that
extend over spatial scales ranging from sub-micron to planetary, and time scales of less than
a second to billions of years. The phenomena involved are frequently not only intellectually
challenging but also socio-economically relevant and significant. At Academia Sinica, faculty
research interests are far ranging, including the evolution of Earth’s atmosphere,
anthropological effects on Earth’s climate both regionally and globally, changes to the
BIOgeochemistry of the ocean in response to increased atmospheric CO2, the effects of
atmospheric processes on ocean BIOgeochemistry, changes in fluvial input to oceans due to
climate change, the physical and chemical processes that govern the dynamic evolution of
the solid Earth, processes occurring within the lithosphere, especially those operating around
subduction zones, within orogenic belts, and in the lower part of the continental crust, the
mechanism and wave propagation of earthquakes, transport and fate of atmospheric
pollutants, and the health risks of environmental contaminants.

i) Biodiversity (BIODIV) program
Over the past two centuries, global industrialization and the explosive growth of the human
population have greatly accelerated extinction of the Earth’s species. This rapid decline in
BIOlogical diversity is a great threat to the continuing survival of the species that remain,
including humans, because it disturbs the balance of ecosystems. BIOmedical and agricultural
sciences also rely on natural products, successful exploitation and management of
BIOdiversity is directly linked to human welfare. There are a great number of government
agencies and non-governmental organizations devoted to raising public awareness and
improving policy on BIOdiversity. Society has a pressing need to increase the supply of well-
trained scientists in relevant fields who can work on these issues.

The TIGP BIOdiversity Program offers a unique opportunity for aspiring young scientists to
receive multidisciplinary training. The diverse ecosystems and the large number of endemic
species in Taiwan are invaluable resources for the study of BIOdiversity. In addition, the
strong research teams in Academia Sinica and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU)
provide students with a broad range of expertise in areas such as ecology, evolution, genetics,
statistics, and socio-economics. We expect our graduates to contribute to basic research that
improves our understanding of BIOlogical diversity in Taiwan and the surrounding areas, and
ultimately, to influence public policies for the conservation and sustainability of BIOlogical
resources.

XV. Can my referees send their letters by email or by post?

after you fill in your referees' information in your application, your referees will be

suggest that applicants and referees make use of our online system, as the electronic form
