INFORMATION :

India is a very big and beautiful country . It is a part of the Asian Continent . It is the seventh
largest country in terms of area in the world . It is also the second most populous country in the
world. The land surface of India varies from place to place . It has high mountains , vast plains ,
dry deserts and thick forests .It also has many rivers and coastline, with beautiful beaches .

India is a peninsular country as it is surrounded by water on three sides. The neighbouring

countries of India are Pakistan , Afganishtan, China,Nepal , Bhutan Bangladesh and Myanmar.
India is surrounded by huge mountain ranges called the Himalayan Ranges.

India can be broadly divided into six physical divisions or geographical regions :

1.The Northern Mountains :

Very high hills with sharp tops (peaks) are called mountains . The Himalayan mountain ranges
lie in te north. There are many peaks in the mountains. Most of them remain covered with snow.
In the mountain regions it is cold throughout the year. Mount Everest . on the Nepal – China
border , is the highest peak in the himalayan mountain ranges as well as in the world . Many
rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna , Sutluj and Brahmaputra originate in these mountains and
flow down to the plains . These rivers are formed by melting the snow.

2. The Northern Plains :

Plains are flat pieces of land . The grear Northern Plains of India are located just to the south of
Himalayas . The plain is formed by the deposit of fine soil brought down by the rivers. In the
plains summers are hot and winters are cold . Rivers such as Ganga and Yamuna flow through
these plains . These rivers have made the soil fertile. Fertile land , plenty of fresh water and a
favourable climate have made the plain into very densely populated regions.

3. The Great Indian Desert/Thar desert:

A large area of land covered with sand is called a desert. In the north westen part of India lies
th Indian Desert , also called the Thar Desert . Thar dsert covers most of Rajasthan . This area
is hot and dry . It gets very little rainfall and very few plants and trees grow here. Only thorny
plants , bushes and few trees grow here . Animals such as sheep , goat and camel are reared by
the people ,as these animals can bear extreme climatic conditions .

4. The Southern Plateau:

A high land with steep sides and a flat top is called a plateau . The southern part of India is a
plateau. The southern plateau is called the Deccan plateau. It covers the largest area of our
country. It has an uneven surface . The land is hard and rocky . It is less fertile than plains .

5.The Coastal Plains :

A basic fact about coastal plains is that coastal plains are flat, low-lying pieces of land next to an
ocean or a sea coast. One of the largest coastal plains in the world is in eastern South America.

Coastal plains feature a body of water, such as an ocean, on one side and a landform, such as a
mountain or hills, on the other. The inland boundary of a coastal plain is called a fall line. .

6. The Island Regions:

A piece of land surrounded by water on all sides is called an island . There are two groups

of islands in our country – i) Andaman and Nicobar Island ii) Lakshadweep Island

All the islands are not big many small islands are there as well. Only some of the islands have

human population . These islands are known for their greeneries .
