If there’s anything better in this world than
motorcycling in West Virginia during October,
I haven’t found it. The twisty, little, forgotten road winds its way
through a stretch of gorgeous West Virginia terrain. Trees on both sides
have been standing guard for so long, that their branches have meshed
with each other, forming a perfect canopy over the road. The leaves
up there are busy doffing their summer-worn green for the reds, golds,
oranges, and yellows of autumn. Their colors are so brilliant that it almost
hurts the eye. They have begun yielding to the pull of gravity, floating gently
earthward to a soft landing on the roadway. The dusting of leaves we’re
riding through hasn’t been disturbed by a cage in more than an hour. As
my bike rolls down this stretch of solitary byway, they swirl up in my wake,
giving form to that invisible whirlpool of air that follows me everywhere I
ride. Donna’s bike slips right into this vortex of spinning leaves, giving them
yet another burst of energy. Their dance celebrates our passage even after
their image has faded from our mirrors.
The oppressive humidity of the mid-summer months is just a steamy
memory now. The chilly mornings and warm afternoons mean that riding
gear with adjustable venting will be comfortable all day. Our bike engines
run their best in this cooler, drier air. They will be more than happy to power
us along this amazing piece of highway.
Cresting the ridge, the trees part just enough to provide a glimpse of the
massive valley below. A gravel pull-off provides an opportunity to park the
ponies, and take a peek. As we step through the last of the fire-engine-
red underbrush lining the ridge, a breath-taking landscape of enormous
magnitude stretches before us. Mountains pile on top of each other, WEST VIRGINIA

Letters To
The Editor

Gary,
We rode from Iaeger, in McDowell County, to Moorefield this past
weekend. I picked up a copy of Thunder Roads West Virginia at the
motel, and I really enjoyed reading it. We had a great ride, except for the
fog at Snowshoe. I have ridden the Blue Ridge Parkway and The Skyline
Drive, and our ride was more exciting and beautiful than those. I love it!!
Charlie R. Lambert

Charlie,
Welcome to the Thunder Roads West Virginia family. I’m glad you like
the magazine. I couldn’t agree with you more about the beauty of riding
in West Virginia. This state was made for bikers, and there really is
no reason to ride anywhere else. Yes, you can find cool roads in other
places, but no state can match ours for its amazing concentration of great
biking roads.
Gary

Greetings to All,
Awesome! That is how Betty and I felt when we read the articles produced
and printed in the August issue of Thunder Roads West Virginia magazine.
We were present and took part in the Motorcycle Crash Scene Reenactment
(MCCSR), but still found that it had a sobering effect on us as we read the
article and noted the writer’s observations.
In June, at the West Virginia Convention, the District Staff led by Director, Buz
Mowrer and Senior District Educator, Don Henrey decided to conduct another
Motorcycle Crash Scene Reenactment. They had presented one the previous
year and it was so well received that they wanted to do another with a few
surprise twists.
Please take a few moments to look at the articles and photos that are in
the magazine. The first article is on page 09, and is very complimentary of
GWRRA and the machines we ride. Then move to page 17, where you will
find the story of how the District of West Virginia went over and above to bring
a world class education to its members, as it relates to accident response.
It is noteworthy that at Wing Ding 32, Don Henrey, the Senior District
Educator from West Virginia was selected as the “International Educator of
the Year!” Congratulations from all of your fellow Educators and Members.
Gene and Betty Knutson
International Directors, Rider Education Gold Wing Road Riders Association

Gene and Betty,
Thank you for appreciating our efforts to report the story of this important
seminar, put on by the West Virginia Chapter of GWRRA. Mr. Henrey and the
rest of his team did an outstanding job of presenting an extremely realistic
crash scenario. They armed the attendees with knowledge that will save lives.
It is our hope that enough of that information found its way through our story
to help other bikers know what to do when a crash occurs.
As for Mr. Henrey, let me offer my congratulations for receipt of an honor
that is well deserved. For more about the award, see the story on page
17 of this issue.

Mountaineer Pride Worldwide is the motto of the 167th Airlift

Wing of the West Virginia National Guard. That pride was on display
when the wing hosted the Thunder Over the Blue Ridge air show
at Shepherd Field in Martinsburg. For two beautiful days, tens of
thousands of visitors were treated to a free air show, which included
tours of the massive C-5 Galaxy aircraft that this unit flies in support
of military missions all over the world. In the skies overhead,
breath-taking aerobatic performances were delivered by the U.S.
Army Golden Knights parachute team, the U.S. Navy F/A 18 Super
Hornet, the A-10 Thunderbolt (a close air support jet nicknamed the
“Warthog”), and were topped off by the precision demonstrations of
the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flying the F-16C.
As if this incredible display of raw power and speed isn’t enough
reason for Thunder Roads West Virginia to be here, most of the men
and women who serve at this airfield are bikers, too. And just to put
a final note on whether this is an event for a motorcycle magazine to
cover, there was even a bike on display alongside its matching bi-plane.

precedes the first vehicle I’ve seen yet. A truck,

I’m nearing the line between Doddridge County, where I am now,
and Tyler County. As I round yet another of these deceptively sharp
turns, a plot of land on the outside of the curve catches my eye. Here,
in the middle of a forgotten road, in a forgotten valley – (that may
not even exist) – is a forgotten cemetery. It’s a small plot. Perhaps a
family cemetery. But it beckons me back, so I turn around and park in
the ditch by this little knoll covered with crumbling tombstones. By the
roadside is an almost new sign, proclaiming this to be the “Underwood
Cemetery.” But the spiffy sign doesn’t look right, because the stones
are old, and deteriorating. The sign is brand new, yet the tombstones
date to the 1800’s. Things are just not fitting together today, and I’m
getting dizzy from trying to connect the dots.
Many of the markers, predictably, bear the name “Underwood.”

in Charleston
by Gary Westphalen
photos by Moe Vetter and Gary Westphalen
It is a few ticks before 6 P.M. on a Wednesday evening in
September. Humid air, made even more pungent by a full day of
blazing heat from the sun, wraps its influence around every building,
every tree, every thing on the grounds of the State Capitol in
Charleston, West Virginia. The activities of the day – policy, politics,
governing the State – have given way to lengthening shadows cast
by the huge trees, monuments, and the gold dome that adorns the
Capitol itself.
This space is surrounded on all sides by the large stone buildings
that house the mechanisms of state government. They block out the
sounds of the surrounding city. Things here are almost quiet. Almost.
On a landing a dozen steps above the circular driveway in front of
the Capitol, stands a podium flanked by a dozen chairs. Several
people scurry about, making last minute preparations. Their muted
conversations are lost to the slight breeze in this huge amphitheater.
In a heartbeat, everything changes. A deep, rumbling noise
that began so quietly and far away that it wasn’t even noticed at
first, breaks through between two of those buildings, erupting into
a thunderous cacophony that shakes the senses, as well as the
ground beneath my feet. Someone shouts, “They’re coming!” This
is what I came for.
It takes several minutes for the parade of about two-hundred Harley-
Davidson motorcycles to make their way onto the circular driveway,
where they will stand a silent vigil to the opening ceremonies of the
annual West Virginia HOG Rally. Their riders make up the Harley
Owners Group (HOG), and they have come from all over the region
to celebrate riding a Harley in West Virginia. For the next four days,
they will participate in group rides, fund raising activities, motorcycle
exhibitions, and endless story-telling about riding the most celebrated
brand of motorcycles in the world. I hesitate to use the well-worn

Bikers Ride for
Babies in Flatwoods
“Everybody cares about babies, so it really is actually a very good connection,”
says Mindy Smith, as she reflects on the concept of bikers gathering to raise funds
for the Bikers for Babies program. Mindy is the West Virginia Director for March of
Dimes, the parent organization behind Bikers for Babies. She points out that, “The
motorcycle community has the most generous hearts. It’s just a great group of
folks, and many of these folks are fathers or mothers.”
That generosity is on display during this weekend in Flatwoods, West Virginia,
where the Braxton County Convention and Visitors Bureau is sponsoring two days
of activities under the Bikers for Babies banner. A Friday evening of music, a pig
roast, and camaraderie is followed by a Saturday ride on some of the best roads
West Virginia has to offer. As the bikes were lining up for the run, a National Guard
Blackhawk Helicopter landed near the parking lot, where it would be on display for
the bikers throughout the day.
Close to 200 bikes rolled out of the parking lot of the Braxton County Middle
School for what would be a ride of about 120 miles in length. Construction pushed
the opening leg of the run onto I-79 for a short burst up to Burnsville. From there,
the ride grabbed hold of beautiful back roads for the run to its lunch stop, at the
Stonewall Jackson State Park. From here, the ride headed southeast to Rock
Cave, where it rolled onto Highway 20 south for a gorgeous run to the second stop
at the Holly River State Park.
The day started under beautiful blue skies, but clouds gradually rolled in as the
day went on. By the time the bikes made it to Holly River, it looked as though rain
clouds might change the character of the remainder of the ride. Some raindrops did
eventually make their presence known, but the bikers who held out for a while at
Holly River managed to avoid the sprinkles. The after ride party included more food,
as well as music by the Davisson Brothers and Crossroads.
“We wanted to do something unique and good for the March of Dimes, and
also for the community,” says Tammy Dickens, of the Braxton County Convention
and Visitors Bureau. The March of Dimes has been promoting Bikers for Babies
events for fifteen years now. This is the second year for this particular run. “It was
pretty good last year,” says Tammy, “This year it is much bigger. I would say we’ve
probably doubled our numbers this year. So we plan to keep doing it, and watch
our numbers grow each year.”

TIMBERLINE
RALLY

What do Downhill Skiing and

Motorcycling have in common?
At first glance, you’re likely to say,
“Nothing.” But the more you think
about it, the more the parallels
become obvious. Wind in your
face? Check. Adrenaline rush?
Check. A love of speed? Oh, yeah.
Addiction to the twists and turns
of a good mountainside? Bring it
on! Winter? Whoah. Hold on there.
That last one isn’t working for me.
18 THUNDER ROADS WEST VIRGINIA OCTOBER 2010
Okay, so the two sports draw the line at sharing a favorite season. But that just means they
can at least share a facility. The Timberline Ski Resort, south of Davis, WV, in this instance.
This is just the second year for the Timberline Rally, and some 700 bikers found their way to
the Canaan Valley facility for three days of great roads, music, bike games, ski lift rides to the
top of the mountain, and to ride, ride, ride.
Timberline sits at the northern end of the Monongahela National Forest, in Tucker County.
Reaching the resort requires a biker to travel Highway 32, which is such a great road that
you won’t want to stop. But the bikes pulled in anyway, only to gather up into ever-changing
clutches of riders, and take off again. A weekend of beautiful sunshine, with warm days and
cool nights, made life on two wheels as good as it gets.
Between rides, bikers had the opportunity to slow down and hang out on the back deck at
the ski lodge, where several bands kept things jumping. There was pro wrestling, bike games,
vendors, a bike and car show, and those vertigo-inducing lift rides to the top of the mountain.
Organizers Jeff and Kim Davis said they are very happy with this year’s turnout, and are
looking forward to Timberline III next year. Mark the last weekend of August on your calendar
and plan to ride to a ski resort.

BIKE OF THE
MONTH

Seasoned followers of our Bike of the Month series know that we don’t
always look for the high dollar custom jobs that are beyond the average
biker’s reach. In fact, we’re more likely to spotlight that strange second
cousin who sleeps in the shed behind Uncle Matthew’s house. You know the
one. It ain’t quite right. It is, you might say, a little Twisted.
Frankly, we can’t think of a better month for this bike, than the one that
harbors the most twisted of all celebrations. For your spooky Halloween
pleasure, we present Mr. Yuk. Uncle Matthew is actually Matt Reel. He’s
a Clarksburg Fire Fighter, as well as one of the mechanics at The Twisted
Spoke, just down the street.
“It was to the point of, ‘Hey, I’ve got enough parts lying around in the
basement. I can actually put a motorcycle together,’” says Matt. Mr. Yuk’s
pedigree is a lot like that of Frankenstein: a little bit of this, and a little bit of
that. “It’s a 1979 Ironhead Sportster frame with a v-twin hard tail. It has a
2001 Buell Lightning engine, and a 2005 Harley Super Glide front end. The
rear wheel is off a 2004 Deuce. We fabbed up the oil tank, the exhaust and
the intake systems ourselves at the shop, and twisted up the rear fender
struts. It has the front brakes of a Honda CBR sport bike, and the rear brakes
off a Hyabusa sport bike. Biltwell Clubman handlebars. The seat was done
by Phillip Anderson of Clarksburg, West Virginia.”
Talking with Matt, one gets the vision of him stitching together dug-up
parts in the lab at the top of a castle tower, as thunder cracks and lightning
flashes all around him. When one particularly powerful bolt strikes the
pinnacle of the tower, the cobbled together beasty sputters a bit, then
rumbles steadily as its slightly maniacal creator turns his eyes upward to the
storm, shouting, “It’s alive!!!”

The Evel Door
Swings Open

PHOTOS BY JIM HOTTLE

If at first you succeed, do it again and again, and
it will get bigger and bigger. That was the philosophy
at work at the Evel Speed Custom Machine & Motor
Sick’l Shop in Inwood, WV, where the third annual
Open House drew hundreds of bikers. It was a fine
Saturday for riding around in a pasture, participating
in all sorts of biker games. Dwain “Evel Speed” Myers
says that at one point he counted about three hundred
bikes in the parking area. More than 40 bikes were
entered in the show.
“Our primary reason is just to give back to the
customers,” says Dwain, in explaining why he puts
this event on every year. “There’s nothing else that
goes on around here, I don’t think, as far as an event
like we put on.” No admission is charged for entry
to the all-day affair. The free music line-up was also
expanded from one band last year to two this time
around. Freak Show was the lead-off band, followed
by J Factor. Another addition this year was a beer
garden, sponsored by Nan and Pop’s Place. There
were also a variety of vendors serving everything
from food to pin striping.
Myers opens the doors one other time each year.
His Customer Appreciation Day is scheduled for
December 4.

EURO-RIDING

The bikes carry badges with names

like Triumph, KTM, and BMW. These
machines are lean, powerful bikes
with angular shapes. Many have
their roots in the dual sport world.
Some have borrowed designs
from the race tracks of Europe.
There are horizontally opposed
twin engines, and three-cylinder in-
lines. They sound different. Many
have twin headlights that look, well,
odd. Large mirrors sit high atop the
handlebars, giving these bikes a
bug-like appearance from the front.
Most of these brands have little or
no dealer representation in West
Virginia, so when you spot one, the
odds are that it carries an out-of-state
license plate. Although their numbers
here are small, they are formidable
combatants when attacking the
twisties of West Virginia.

24 THUNDER ROADS WEST VIRGINIA OCTOBER 2010

I think everybody
in this group up
here, the sort of
folks that come,
just like to ride.

The men and women who pilot these nimble bikes are different, too. Just like bikers
everywhere, they are friendly, happy people who understand the psychological
benefits of motorcycling. But they’re not sporting tattoos, beanie helmets and leather
vests. They wear serious safety gear – full coverage helmets, armored jackets,
head-to-toe riding suits. Their get-togethers don’t revolve around music festivals,
vendor displays, bike shows, and the like. They call themselves EuroRiders, and
their focus is on devouring great roads in huge helpings.
“It’s a 300-mile loop,” says Garry Simmons at a ride briefing the evening before
one of the weekend’s runs will take place. Garry, who lives in Pittsburgh, PA, is
one of the volunteer event coordinators of this weekend, and will be leading this
particular ride. “That should be six hours moving, plus a couple hours, maybe two-
and-a-half, for breaks and lunch. That’s like fifteen minutes at the gas station every
two hours. That’s the break.”
The sixteen riders that make up this West Virginia EuroRiders Rendezvous
are staying at the North Bend State Park, East of Parkersburg. Pennsylvania and
Kentucky have the highest representations in this group. They come to West Virginia
because, frankly, our roads are the best anywhere.
The Friday night briefing outlined the rides
that would take off early the next morning. “Kentucky has great roads, but I would say West Virginia’s are even better,” is how
Mark Hawkins puts it. Hawkster hails from Frankfort, KY. “It’s pretty close for us to
get over here, and we just enjoy the state. It’s been very good for us. We’ve been
coming over for a few years.” In addition to great roads, he says traffic is lighter here,
making for better riding.
“I think everybody in this group up here, the sort of folks that come, just like to
ride,” says Gerry Hagen. Gerry is from Anderson, South Carolina, but, “I actually do
travel once in a while, up North,” he says, punctuating his southern humor with a
hearty laugh. This is the second time that he’s been to this particular gathering. It’s
early in the morning of that 300-mile-day that Gerry will be riding. The parking lot at
the North Bend Lodge is still draped in morning fog. He is wiping his bike down, and
jawing away with EuroRiders from other states. The sun is about to rise over the hill,
so by the time they hit the road, the air will be crystal clear, and the roads dry and
ready to yield to these roadmasters.
“I think it’s a good, all-around general bike,” says Gerry Hagen, when assessing his
Triumph Tiger 1050. “I can sit upright on it.” Gerry’s scoot calls upon a liquid-cooled,
in-line triple to churn out 111 bhp at the crank. The ponies romp through a six-speed
gearbox, held under control by a frame that’s quite sport-bike-like. The result is a Grin-
ometer that will show big numbers in a hurry. “As it proved yesterday, I can go just
as fast on the interstate as on my FJR, so that’s good,” he says, clearly re-living the
moment. The FJR he mentions is the other bike he owns. This Super-Sport Touring
bike, built by Yamaha, likes the upside of 150 mph. The Tiger is clearly no slouch.
“The engines are torquey, but revvy,” adds Hawkster. He also rides a Triumph
Tiger. “They’re street oriented power,” he explains, “They handle good and the
power is oriented, not for the race track, and not for putting around town, but just
for general riding.” He adds the machines are well-built, and bulletproof. “I’ve got
over 150-thousand miles on Triumphs,” he says, “I’ve only had one repair outside of
warranty, that I can remember, and it cost me $80.”
Gerry Hagen (left) and Mark Hawkins (right)

Megan's
Angels
A dark and spooky sky met bikers as they assembled at the VFW
Post in Terra Alta, WV. Some 60 bikes gathered to take part in the
Fourth Annual Megan’s Angels Run. Each year the run benefits a
different child who is battling illness, and this year it was Brayden
Ringer’s turn. Jamie and Kammie Lantz, who organize the ride,
chose Brayden as the benefactor. They say he is in remission from
Burkin’s Lymphoma since January. Following his chemotherapy,
Brayden’s hair has returned and is back to normal activity.
Just as Brayden has seen improvement, so did the weather on
the day of this run. The sun came out and riding conditions were
perfect. Although the bikes did roll over some wet pavement here
and there, the bikers never took any rain. The ride went from Terra
Alta to Kingwood on Highway 7, then down 72 to U.S. 50, where the
ride briefly touched Maryland before returning to Terra Alta.

38 THUNDER ROADS WEST VIRGINIA OCTOBER 2010
God says you are valuable By Jim “Jammer” Marcum
You have been bought and paid for by Christ, so you belong to Him--be free now from all these earthly prides and fears. 1 Cor. 7:23.
You have been bought and paid for by Christ. You belong to Jesus. How much does that make you worth? God says not only
are you accepted; you’re valuable. How much do you think you’re worth? I’m not talking about your net worth; I’m talking about
your self worth. You can be rich or poor, but it has nothing to do with your value as a person.
There are two things that determine value in life: 1 - It depends on what someone is willing to pay for it.
How much is your bike worth? Not as much as you think it is, and probably not as much as it was a year ago. Your bike is worth what
somebody is willing to pay for it. No more.
2 - It depends on who owned it in the past. Sometimes something is valuable because of who used to own it.
For example, a bike owned by Arlen Ness would be more valuable than my Softail. Based on these two things, what’s your
value? Ask yourself, ‘Who owns me?’ ‘What was paid for me?’ You have been bought and paid for by Christ, so you
belong to him. You belong to Jesus. How much does that make you worth? Now ask yourself, ‘Who do I belong to?’
The Bible says you belong to God. God exchanged His own Son for you! The Cross proves your value. Jesus didn’t
die for junk. You are incredibly valuable.Nobody has ever paid a greater price than God paid for you.
You are acceptable and you are valuable!
Jim “Jammer” Marcum resides in Charleston and has been involved in motorcycle ministry for
nearly 15 years and serves as Clergy within Highways and Hedges Motorcycle Ministry.

CMA
STATE RALLY
BY DONNA JONES
One hundred, forty-six members of the Christian Motorcyclist
Association gathered in Ripley, WV, for a state rally at the Parchment
Valley Conference Center. All of the Area Representatives, the State
Coordinator, and Evangelist were also present. Attendees enjoyed
great fellowship and renewed friendships, while networking with
those from Chapters across the state. There was a service each
night and morning, that added to a renewed sense of purpose and
mission for these evangelists, with a heart for the biker world. The
main message for the CMA member was to simply carry the love of
God to all people, and be a source of help and encouragement to
those that cross their paths at rallies, poker runs, memorial rides and
other charitable riding events. Meeting people and building rapport
through shared time and conversation is the best evangelistic tool.
Riding motorcycles is probably one of the most enjoyable ways
to pass a day, but riding with God’s purposes in mind is beyond
mere personal pleasure. Participants enjoyed a talent show, Jeff
Foxworthy impersonator, a ride, water games, an ice cream social
in the dark (after a lightening storm killed the power) and collective
praise and worship. It was like spending the weekend with family.
Rick Burkey, one of the Area Reps, shared the salvation message
through the paintings on his bike. The pictures defined the crucifixion,
the resurrection, the unconditional love of God, and our commission
to be the light of the world. Even though the literal lights went out
for several hours during this rally, the spiritual light of attendees
was beaming. Rick’s personalized license plate really said it all,
MTTOMB (“EMPTY TOMB”). Jesus rose from the dead and walked
out of that empty tomb to be a guide and source of comfort and
peace to us all. If you would like to fellowship with bikers who have
a true revelation of this life giving reality, please contact the CMA at
http://www.cmausa.org/.
