E GABION RETAINING WALL WORKS

GABION FILLING MATERIAL

1. Grading of fill:

Rock must be clean, sufficiently durable, hard, non friable and not show
any signs of weathering .Gabion fill is normally a graded fill of between
100 to 200mm in diameter with a nominal 6% smaller or larger. The
grading can be tightened to 80 to 150mm providing the control of the
grading is tight. Stones smaller than the mesh will not be contained by it.
The grading is important to ensure that voids within the unit are
minimized otherwise settlements can occur.

2. Angularity of fill: CUM 10450

E-1
The more angular the fill, the better interlock and the less deformation
of the face occurs. Rounded stone has little interlock and results in
greater deformation of the face. Quarried stone which is normally
angular is the preferable fill as the interlock is very good. Ideally, all
gabions should be fair faced (hand packed on the exposed faces).

3. Density of considerable rock types: (Locally available material

conforming to density specified in detail drawing):
GABION MESH BOX MATERIAL

1. Mechanical Properties:

a. Tensile Strength : The tensile strength of wire used for

mechanically woven, double twisted hexagonal shaped mesh,
lacing wire and stiffener, when tested shall be in accordance
with the requirements of specification IS 280:2006 (350 -
500MPa) at a minimum elongation of 10%.

b. Tensile Strength of Mesh Panel: The minimum tensile strength of

the mesh panel must be 50.0kN/m in the parallel to twist direction
and 25.5kN/m in the perpendicular to twist direction in accordance
with the requirements of IS 16014: 2012.

2. Physical Properties:

a. Zinc Coating: The coating weight shall be heavily coated and soft
type conforming to the requirements of specification IS 4826:1972.

Adhesion of Zinc Coating: The zinc coating shall remain adherent to

the steel wire and conform to IS 4826 such that zinc coating does not SQM -
E-2 flake off, nor crack to such an extent that there is possibility of
removing any zinc by rubbing with bare fingers, the use of finger nails
being not allowed.

b. PVC Coating: The initial properties of PVC coating material shall

conform to the following requirements:

a) Specific gravity — In the range from 1.30 to 1.35 when tested in

accordance with IS 13360 (Part 3/Sec 1).

b) Tensile strength — Not less than 20.6MPa when tested in

accordance with IS 13360 (Part 5/Sec 1).

c) Hardness — Shore ‘D’ between 50 and 60, when tested in

accordance with IS 13360 (Part 5/Sec 11).

d) Resistance of PVC coating to sodium chloride solution — When PVC

coated wire is tested in accordance with 12.4 there shall be no loss of
mass.

e) Salt spray exposure — The PVC shall show no effect after 3 000 h of
salt spray exposure in accordance with IS 13360 (Part 8/Sec 14).
