Answer all the five questions (2 x 5 = 10 marks)

1. State D alembert’s principle

It states that “ The system of forces acting on a body in motion is in dynamic equilibrium,
with the inertia force of the body”.

2. Define coefficient of restitution

The ratio of magnitude of the impulses during the restitution period and deformation
period is known coefficient of restitution.

3. Explain the difference between kinetics and Kinematics

Kinematics is the study of a body in motion without considering the forces that cause the
motion. It is dealt with the relationship between velocity, acceleration, time taken etc., of
the bodies without any reference to the cause of motion.

4. A body is dropped from rest. Determine (a) the time required for it to acquire a velocity
of 16 m/s and (b) the time needed o increase its velocity from 16 m/s to 23 m/s.
V=u+gt t = 1.63 s
(b) t = 2.344 s

5. Define coefficient of friction and angle of friction.

It is the ratio of limiting friction to normal friction.
It is the angle between the line of action of the total reaction of one body on another and
the normal to the tangent between the bodies when motion is impending.

PART B

6. (a) A rope is wrapped three and a half times around a cylinder. Determine the force T1
exerted on the free end of the rope that is required to support a 1 KN weight. The
coefficient of friction between the rope and the cylinder is 0.25.(8 marks)

(b) A body weight 100 N is placed on a rough horizontal plane, and pushed by a force of
45 N as shown, to just cause sliding over the horizontal plane. Determine the coefficient
of friction in all the three cases (i), (ii) and (iii)

P P
P

(i) θ = 00 (ii) θ = 250 (iii) θ = 250

Coeff of friction = limiting friction / normal reaction
Case (i) μ = 45/100 = .45
Case (ii) μ = 40.7/80.99 = .503
Case (iii) μ =40.783/119.1 = .342

7. (a) Water drips from a tap at the rate of four drops per second. Determine the vertical
separation between two consecutive drops after the lower drop has attained a velocity of
4 m/s.
V = 4 m/s
V = u+gt ------ t = .40775
Sb = ut+1/2 gt2 = .81551
Sa= u(.407-.25)+ 1/2 x g x (.407-.25)^2

Dist. Bet drops = Sb – Sa

OR
(b) A particle is projected in air with a velocity of 100 m/s and at an angle of 30 0 with the
horizontal find (i) Horizontal range (ii) maximum height reached by particle (iii) time of
flight

Horizontal range = u2sin2θ/g = 882.5 m

Maximum height reached by particle = u2sin2θ/2g = 127.4 m
Time of flight = 2 X (usinθ/g)= 10.19 s

8. (a) A .002 kg mass bullet has a velocity of 2 km/s as it enters a fixed block of wood. It
comes to rest .003 s after entering the block. Determine the average force that acted on
the bullet and the distance penetrated by it.
Use impulse momentum equation
Impulse = F x T
Impulse = Change in momentum = m2v2-m1v1
Work energy Principle
Work done = F x S
Workdone = Change in Kinetic energy = ½ m1v12

(b) Two bodies on of mass 30 kg, moves with a velocity of 9 m/s strikes on an another
body of mass 15 kg, moving in the opposite direction with the velocity of 9 m/s centrally.
Find the velocity of each body after impact, if the coefficient of restitution is 0.8.
Law of conservation of momentum

m1u1+m2u2 = m1v1 +m2v2

4
m1= 30 kg u1 = 9 m/s m2 = 15 kg u2 = -9m/s e= .8

30V1 +15 V2 = 135

Newtons law of collision

e = (v2-v1)/(u1-u2)

v2-v1 = 14.4m/s

V2 = 13 m/s

V1 = -1.8
