Having the opportunity to fill the vacant Survey Technician position offered for the
county of Salt Lake would be a great opportunity to start a career and a great learning
experience. I feel that I have the qualifications that would fit into this position. For example, I am
currently enrolled in the Surveying Program at Salt Lake Community College. (SLCC) The classes that I
have been taking are directly related to this position. For example, I have taken, AutoCAD, Public Land
Survey, Land Boundary Law, Public Records, Field Survey Techniques, Legal Descriptions and other
survey classes. I have also worked out in the field setting up equipment and I have experience working
with crew chiefs in locating old monuments and setting new ones. I have also completed a student
internship (Pathways) at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the Cadastral Surveying department,
which required office work assisting with editing field notes, scanning historical documents related to
surveying and printing out Plats in AutoCAD and I have just completed my “Certificate of Proficiency”
in land surveying with 27 credits directly related to land surveying.

I also have a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Utah. The
experience from this degree crosses over to surveying work. For example, some of the experience I
gained doing Archaeology that could cross over to surveying included operating hand held GPS units for
barricading and surveying archaeological sites, working with crew chiefs in assistant of field notes,
monitoring heavy machinery within sites, driving company vehicles on different types of terrain
throughout different times of the year, and I carried and setup heavy equipment for excavations and other
projects.

In addition to working for an Archaeology firm I have completed a summer field school at Range
Creek Canyon in Utah (June 12-August 1, 2012) that is accredited by the University of Utah. Duties
included hiking to difficult spots to record prehistoric sites using IMACS forms and logging spatial data
using Trimble GPS units and some excavation. I have volunteered (March 10-17, 2013) to work under the
direction of Jerry Spangler who is the executive director for the Colorado Plateau Archaeological alliance.
The volunteer work was in Grand Staircase Escalante Utah and Duties included scouting out Pre-Historic
Anasazi and Ancestral Pueblo Sites and filling out IMACS forms for site overviews to document them for
the BLM.

I also have experience with Student Independent Research (SIRG) which is volunteer work at the
archaeology lab inside The Natural History Museum of Utah (Jan -May 2013). My duties included
organizing photos in a data base for the Range Creek Field School as well as organizing artifacts for
storage and then cataloging them in a data base.

My current enrolment at SLCC in the Survey program, my internship, field experience, office
work, completion of my “Certificate of Proficiency” in land surveying, as well as my experience outside
of surveying, such as my Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and working for an Archaeological firm, and
The Natural History Museum has familiarized me with a broad overview of many different aspects of
experiences related to surveying. I am always seeking to expand my knowledge. These past experiences
have expanded them and tested my abilities to keep learning. Therefore, this opportunity with Salt Lake
County would be a great way for me to start my career and continue learning and gaining new
experiences.
