ABSTRACT

EXISTING-SINGLE STORIED STEEL SHEDS FOR CANTEEN & GARBAGE for VANCOT LIMITED is used for
production purpose. The factory was visited by ACCORD and the report was published in 17th June, 2014.

We performed engineering assessment and the following observations have been found.

1. As built drawing has been prepared by site investigations of various members.

2. Several members of Steel sheds are inadequate. Inadequate members are proposed to
strengthen.
3. Retrofitting drawing has been provided.

A detailed calculation and analysis has been described in the rest of the report.

1.0) INTRODUCTION
The existing single-storied steel sheds for VANCOT LIMITED located at Chittagong has been
re-analyzed for different loading conditions & different load combinations according to Accord
code. This report summarizes the analysis and design related data which indicates whether the
shed is safe or not in current loading condition. In addition to these, the report recommends the
remedial measures and actions (if required) for the structural defects.

2.0) SCOPE OF WORK

The design work of this Project has been carried out following the design criteria and
ACCORD Code. The scope of the work is as follows-

 Prepare As-Built Drawing.

 Analysis & comments on existing structure
 Prepare retrofitting drawing if required.

3.0) WORK METHEDOLOGY

Based on the supplied Architectural & as-built Drawing, field measurement we, DESIGN &
DEVELOPMENT SOLUTION (DDS)” developed a computer analysis model and carried out
complete analysis of the structure incorporating various design data as per Accord Code. Loading
values is considered as prescribed in ACCORD. Strength parameter of steel is considered 36ksi.
The results obtained from computer model analysis were checked against relevant specifications
and hand calculations. Finally, the design data is compared with the As Built drawing of this
structure. If it is satisfied then the structure is safe and sound, otherwise additional treatment is
provided for further uses.

4.0) STRUCTURAL DESIGN CONCEPT & CRITERIA

The structural element has been designed and considering the following criteria.

4.1) CODES AND STANDARDS

1) Accord Bangladesh Ltd.

2) American Institute of steel construction (AISC)
3) American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM)

4.2) GENERAL LOAD DATA

Dead Load:
Dead load is the vertical load due to the self-weight of the permanent structural and non-
structural component of a building, e.g. Foundation, column, rafters, deck, steel joists,
purlins, walls, ceilings, permanent partitions and fixed service equipment.

Unit weight of materials and the calculation of design dead loads are according to section-
2.2, Chapter-2, part-6, BNBC-Page6-22

Live Load:
Live load is the load superimposed by the use or occupancy of the building not including the
environmental loads such as wind load, rain load, earthquake load or dead load. (Ref. BNBC,
Part-6, Chapter-2, Sec-2.3.2)

But it should be not less than the minimum floor live load. (Ref. BNBC, Part-6, Chapter-2,
Sec-2.3.3)

Wind Load:
The calculation of wind load confirms the sub-clause 2.4, Chapter 2, Part-6 of BNBC. The
following equation has been used to calculate sustained wind pressure of the structure.

Pz=CgCpCcCiCzVb2 [BNBC, 2.4.6.2, 2.4.6.3 Page-6-33, 6-34]

Wind load was applied in two orthogonal directions X and Y.

Earth quake Load:

As per specifications of BNBC, Part-6, Chapter-2, section-2.5.51, Equivalent Static Force
Method can be applied to calculate the earth quake force of this structure.
Design Base Shear, V=ZICW/R (Ref. Sec2.5.6.1, Chapter-2, Part-6, BNBC)

Where,
Z=Seismic Zone coefficient factor,
I=Importance factor,
C=Numerical Co-efficient,
R=Response Modification factor,

4.3) LOAD APPLIED ON STRUCTURE

Dead Load:
i. Self-weight of structure.

Live Load:
i. Live load on roof=20 psf
Wind Load:
i. Basic wind speed, Vb=260 Km/h
ii. Exposure Type=A
iii. Importance factor, I=1.0

Wind load was applied in two orthogonal directions X and Z.

Seismic Load:
i. Seismic Zone coefficient factor, Z=0.15( Zone-02)
ii. Importance factor, I = 1.0
iii. Response Modification factor, R=6
iv. Site co-efficient, S=1.5

Earth quake load was applied in two orthogonal directions X & Z.

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS & WORKER SAFETY DURING

RETROFITTING.

Precautions before and during retrofitting shall be as follows:

1. Precautions must be taken before and during retrofitting in accordance with a 2601-2001, 'the
retrofitting of structures'.

2. The retrofitting shall not be commenced until precautionary measures have been inspected
and approved. it is advisable to inform adjoining neighbors prior to the retrofitting so that they may
close windows or take other measures.

3. Before retrofitting is commenced and also during the progress of such work, all electric cables or
apparatus which are liable to be a source of danger, other than a cable or apparatus used for the
retrofitting works shall be disconnected.

4. During the progress of retrofitting, the work shall be under the continuous supervision of
engineer or of an experienced foreman.

5. All practicable precautions shall be taken to avoid danger from collapse of a building when
any part of a framed or partly framed building is removed.

6. Any asbestos present on the site should be removed in accordance with the occupational
health and safety (asbestos) regulations.

7. When the retrofitting site adjoins a street or public walkway, a 2.4 meter high solid hoarding
shall be erected on the street boundary unless the building is setback at least twice its height
from the street boundary, in which case a security fence having a minimum height of 1.5 meters
may be utilized. notices lettered in accordance with as1319, displaying the words “warning
retrofitting in progress” to be fixed to the hoarding or security fence.

8. When the site adjoins a footpath or public thoroughfare in addition to hoarding required by clause
1.5.1.5 of as2601-2001, the footpath shall be covered by an overhead protective structure unless
the vertical height above the footpath is less than four meters or the least horizontal distance
between footpath and the nearest part of the structure is greater than half the height of the
structure. (it should be noted that regulation 604(4) requires the consent and report of the
relevant council be obtained before a building permit is issued which requires the erection of
safety precautions over the road reserve).

9. Demolished material shall not be allowed to remain on any floor or structure if the weight of the
material exceeds the safe carrying capacity of the floor or structure and such material shall be so
piled or stacked that it will not endanger workmen or other persons, and shall be removed as
soon as practicable from the site unless otherwise authorized by the building surveyor.

10. Dust creating material, unless thoroughly dampened shall not be thrown or dropped from
the building but shall be lowered by hoisting apparatus or removed by material chutes.

11. Chutes shall be completely enclosed and a danger sign shall be placed at the discharge
end of every chute.

12. No part of any external wall on or within three meters of a street alignment shall be pulled
down except during the hours of 7.00am-6.00pm official days or 9.00am-6.00pm weekends and
public holidays, unless directed by the building surveyor.

13. Protective outriggers shall be installed where necessary to guard against danger to life or property
or when required by the building surveyor.

14. Upon completion of the work, notification shall be given to the building surveyor that the
work has been completed satisfactorily.

before starting work and the engineer/ architect shall be immediately notified, in writing,
of any discrepancies. in no case shall dimensions be scaled from plans, sections, or details on
the structural drawings.

2). The contractor shall determine the location of utility services in the area to
be excavated, before beginning excavation

3). The contractor shall assume sole & complete responsibility for job site
conditions during the course of construction of this project, including safety of all persons and
property. this requirement shall apply continuously & not be limited to normal working
