ES 13 – Mechanics of Materials 1stsem, A.Y.

2017-2018

Instructions: Solve the following problems independently. Answer sheets must be yellow ruled paper (8.5x13).
Start the solution to each problem on a new sheet, and always put a box on your final answers. Anything
written at the back portion of your paper will not be graded. Show
clearly all pertinent solutions and state the assumptions made, if any.

1. The three-member frame structure is subjected to a horizontal

load P = 500 lb at pin C. The pins at B, C, and D apply loads to
members BD and CD. If the stresses in members BD and CD are
σBD = 1200 psi and σCD = - 820 psi, what are the respective cross-
sectional area of the two members?

2. Knowing that 𝜃 = 40° and P = 9 kN and assuming that the string

AC will be stressed (not slacking), determine
a. The smallest allowable diameter of the pin at B if the average
shearing stress in the pin is not to exceed 120 MPa
b. The corresponding bearing stress in member AB at B
c. The corresponding average bearing stress in each of the
support brackets at B.
d. If the diameter of the hole at A is 5 mm, and the punching
stress of member AB is 250 MPa, what force was applied to
punch the hole?

3. The load P produces an axial strain in the brass

5. A square plate in has the following dimensions before
normal stresses are applied: Lx = Lz = 160 mm, t=20 mm. Its
Poisson’s ratio, ν = 0.283, and its modulus of rigidity, G = 30
GPa. It is then subjected to normal stresses on ALL its faces
and deforms.
a. If the normal stresses are σx = 444 MPa, σz = 222 MPa,
and its new length along the x-direction is 160.8437
mm, find σy. Lz
b. Find the new thickness of the plate, t’.
c. Find the new length along the z – direction.

7. Member A of the timber step joint for a truss is P FC

subjected to a compressive force P(kN) as shown.
The ultimate stress of the steel material used in the
hanger rod C is 470 MPa while the maximum shear C
A
stress in wood B is 30 MPa. Determine the maximum
allowable force P if the Factor of Safety against
failure by shearing of B is 3 and the Factor of Safety
against failure by fracture of C is 2.5. The steel rod C
has a diameter of 10 mm and the wood B has a width 60O
of 30 mm. Note: Neglect bearing of rod C on wood B.

change in temperature increase/decrease so that B barely touches wall D? Data for the bars AB and BC are
as follows:

9. Each of the two vertical steel posts (E = 200 GPa, α = 12×10-6/°C) has a
height of 300 mm and a diameter of 50 mm. If the springs each has a
stiffness of 0.5 kN/m, determine the resulting stress in the steel posts if the
temperature is raised by 70°C. Assume that springs are initially unstretched.
