COMPARISION OF MODQUEST-FSN & DEKOL-FBSN

Modquest- FSN & other similar products such as DEKOL-FBSN (BASF), Hoquest –
1097(Colour chem.), Sokalan- CP- 5( BASF), Acusol-479N (Rohm & Haas) are all
acrylic co-polymers of varying molecular weight designed for applications in textile
wet processing & water treatment.

Modquest-FSN / Dekol-FBSN/Sokalan-CP-5 are products of similar chemistry & has

an approximate molecular weight of 70,000. These are non-surface active in nature
& hence are non foaming, making them suitable for application on new generation
high turbulance equipments such as jets, soft flow machines, continuous process
systems amongst others.

The Modquest- FSN exhibits following properties.

 CHELATION/SEQUESTRATION
 DISPERSING/DEAGGLOMERATING
 PROTECTIVE COLLOID
 WATER SOFTENING

CHELATION/SEQUESTRATION
Modquest-FSN is a solution co-polymer in which polymerization of co-monomers is
so carried out to achieve right sequestration value suitable for chelating hardness
causing ions already present in water (Ca, Mg, Fe) & also hardness released from
cellulosic fibres during its wet processing As in all textile operations of washing,
scouring ,bleaching & dyeing the quality of water used is of great importance.

WASHING :The salt of Ca , Mg & Fe present in most water are very objectionable.
When soap is added to such water no lather is at first produced, a turbid solution is
formed and curds of sticky insoluble soaps eventually produced. The sticky insoluble
calcium and magnesium soaps, which are precipitated may deposit irregularly on
the goods and uneven dyeing is sure to follow. The effect of iron in water, used in
dyeing mordant colours on wool is to sadden or dull shade. The finishing of cotton
and rayons is often affected by the calcium and magnesium salts in water
particularly where emulsions or softeners are used. Both naturally will prevent the
precipitation of soaps, oils, finishes, sizes and dyes with the hardness forming salts
in water. It will also condition the water against attachment on pipe lines and thus
decrease the amount of iron taken up in solution.

SCOURING : The removal of waxes, oils and fats, sizes and others from textile is
important in their manufacture. In kier boiling, 3-5% of caustic soda is usually used
2
with the assistants such as soaps. The addition of MODQUEST-FSN to the
caustic soda solution will prevent precipitation of silicate, metallic soaps, pectins
etc. It will inhibit catalystic oxidation of cotton & rayon. It improves whiteness &
inhibits yellowing in storage, in white cotton processing.

BLEACHING : It can be used as bleach stable additive into silicate containing and
silicate free bleaching baths providing bleached goods of high whiteness and
quality.

REMARK: MODQUEST-FSN exhibits better chelation value at various pH &

temperature in comparision to DEKOL-FBSN

Dyeing : The manipulated chelation value of Modquest-FSN have no tendency to

sequester/demetalize metal ions present in reactive/vat/sulfur & other anionic
dyes preventing any tone changes. M-FSN is a product with an equilibrated
chelation value so that it will not extract metals from dyestuffs & does not cause
un-levelness on fabrics.

DISPERSING/DEAGGLOMERATING

Dispersing of the sequestered ions from the fibres & hardness of water

SCOURING & DISPERSING ABILITY : Modquest-FSN exerts an outstanding

dispersing effect on the impurities in raw cotton (e.g. waxes & pectinates) and on
the precipitates caused by hard water.

Modquest-FSN helps to disperse salts released from fibers and shows good iron
(Fe) & Calcium (Ca) binding properties.

CONCLUSION :
Both Modquest-FSN & Dekol-FBSN exhibits similar dispersing efficiencies with
Titanium Dioxide i.e. inorganic pigment ( Stability observed for more than 8
hrs)

Without product Titanium Dioxide dispersion is very weak. Gives immediate

sedimentation

• BLEACHING : Reduced damage to bleaching machine and improved operation

rate.

• Reduced damage to bleached good (crease marks, texture disorder, harsh

handle etc)
• For bleaching purposes water containing iron is very objectionable because it
often gives a yellowish cast to bleached materials.
• Capability to chelate & disperse heavy metal ions and anti catalyzing effect
against decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.i.e. prevention of metal ion related
process trouble. Improvement in quality of bleached goods realising reduced
strength loss & reduced possibility of pin holes.

 DYEING:
It is also responsible for the following effects if hard water is used for dyeing of raw
cotton with reactive and direct dyes.

Is a very effective dispersant for calcium carbonate thus formed and maintains
it in a finely dispersed state. As a result, opalescence of the dyeing liquor is
avoided.
It suppresses the formation of calcium salts of reactive dyes hydrolysates that
are difficult to wash out during reactive dyeing.
7
It can prevent precipitation (re-deposition) of the substances released from
the cotton in alkaline baths & of non-saponifiable accompanying impurities
during the dyeing of cotton & its blends.
Has ability to disperse & prevent agglomeration of dyestuffs during the dyeing
operation.
Will increase solubility of precipitating salts by threshold effect i.e. adsorption
on small seeds of precipitates & prevents their growth and agglomeration.
This reduces precipitation & scale formation of inorganic salts along with
hardness causing ions which could otherwise deposit on fabrics in the rinse
bath.
Employed in dyeing processes to improve solubility and dispersion of dyestuffs.
They will prevent aggregate formation, which cause un-levelness on fabrics.
Ensures consistent results in dyeing of reactive dyes & increases the colour
yield in hard water in comparison to Dekol-FBSN .(Folder enclosed for your
reference.)
Improves fastness properties of dyeings with direct dyes & promotes removal
of hydrolyzed dyes in soaping of reactive dyed fabrics.
In many cases prevents filtering off in dyeing wound packages.

PROTECTIVE COLLOID
• The hydrolyzed reactive dye- stuffs are thus dispersed into the bath and
conventionally dispersed. It prevents aggregates of insoluble vat dyes which
cause spots on dyed materials. Modquest-FSN contribute to protect dyes
against further hydrolysis and are considered as protective colloids.
• Modquest-FSN is an effective protective colloid and dispersants to prevent
precipitation of mineral salts and avoids settling and scaling on fibers and
machineries.

WATER SOFTENING
Modquest-FSN/Dekol-FBSN in general is sequestering agent for polyvalent ions of
many metals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, nickel, zinc and lead. The
polyphosphates widely used in softening water, are unstable at elevated
temperatures and incompatible with some materials, while it is suited for treatment
of water for boilers because of its stability under high pressure and high
temperature.
