XG-7000 Series

4 KEY REASONS
to use Machine Vision for 2D Code Reading
Add 2D code reading to your existing inspection
The XG-7000 includes a 2D code reader tool that can be used in conjunction with other
inspection tools. There is no need for a separate 2D code reader, which saves space, time
and money.

based on 2D code.

Solution Example 1 Flexible Working Distances

CONVENTIONAL METHOD
Fixed-type 2D code readers typically have a working distance
range of 40 mm to 100 mm and have a limited focal distance.
If your application requires the reader to be farther or closer
than the operational working distance, a conventional reader
will fail to work correctly. If the reader needs to be moved due
changes in mounting requirements, an additional reader with
a different focal distance may need to be purchased.

The XG-7000 solves these problems by providing solutions where:

1 Installation distance is limited due to conveyor systems By changing the lens, it is

possible to freely change the
2 Automation equipment needs to be protected from oil, water and coolant working distance.

3 Image processing needs to be built in as part of a robotic process

Even if the camera is not mounted

square to the target, the Calibration
tool on the XG-7000 is capable of 30 mm
correcting the image and reading the
2D code.
Solution Example 2 Easy addition of a second camera to an existing system

CONVENTIONAL METHOD
The vision system and 2D code reader are often separate, which complicates many aspects of the inspection process.
Communication set up and program creation are examples of some of the work involved to integrate the two systems together.

The XG-7000 solves these problems by providing solutions where:

+1
Having a 2D code reader and a separate vision system is
1
not ideal

2 Adding functionality is necessary without constructing a

new system

3 Costs need to be kept at a minimum

Using the camera expansion unit, the XG-7000 can connect a

maximum of 4 cameras. By adding cameras and lenses, it is
possible to perform multiple inspections with a single system.

It is easy to add 2D code reading by simply adding

Solution Example 3 OCR and 2D comparison in the same FOV

CONVENTIONAL METHOD
Typically, a vision system is installed to perform OCR and a 2D code reader was installed to read the 2D code. This often
complicates installation as both devices need to be mounted in close proximity to each other. The process is complicated
further by needing to create software or PLC program to compare the OCR string and the 2D code.

The XG-7000 solves these problems by providing solutions where:

OCR and 2D reading must be performed in the

same field of view

2 High resolution image processing is required

2D code reading needs to be performed with a

The XG-7000 series offers a high speed 5 megapixel

camera in both monochrome and color.

With the XG-7000, reading the serial number
and the 2D code can be performed with one
camera in the same FOV.

Solution Example 4 Easy management and storage of 2D code data

CONVENTIONAL METHOD
Conventionally, data from the vision system and the 2D code reader are sent to a host PC where data is collected and
organized. It takes time, effort, money and often specialized software to maintain and manage the data from these two
different sources.

The XG-7000 solves these problems by providing solutions where:

1 The vision system result data and 2D code data can be

easily accessed on one device

2 Images of the 2D code need to be saved

3 The traceability of the inspections need to be optimal

QR Code and DataMatrix Code Structure

The main 2D code features detailed below (cell size and quiet zone) serve as important elements that are
necessary for stable reading.

Q R CO D E S T RU C T U R E

CELL SIZE
The size of 1 cell is expressed in number of pixels. With the XG, it is ideal for the size of a
single cell to be 4 pixels or more.

QUIET ZONE
A border of 2 cells or more is required around the perimeter of the QR code. Caution is
required so the Quiet Zone is not covered or obstructed.

This pattern allows the 2D code reader to detect the position of the code. Using these
Location Patterns, the code is detected quickly and accurately.

C L O C K PAT T E R N
The series of dotted lines are called a Clock Pattern. This helps the 2D code reader to
understand the positioning of the cells inside the code.

The Alignment Pattern helps the 2D code reader distinguish the position of the
DataMatrix code.
