Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Publish your Creative Story

Content Area: English Language Arts- Writing
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE2W3: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event
or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to
signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

Technology Standard Addressed: Digital Citizen: c. Demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the
rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Students will be able to organize,

create, and publish their narrative to KidPub

URL(s) to support the lesson: https://www.kidpub.com/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
Students will be working throughout the year to create narratives that recount short or long sequence
events. We will work together more towards the middle-ending of the year to create a piece they will be
publishing to KidsPub. They will be creating a narrative about a sequence of events. I am going to provide
them with a writing topic which will be over what was the most fun thing they did over the summer. We will
work together to go over the instructions of the narrative and then as a class create a graphic organizer. The
students will then write their paper over the course of a few weeks and edit it themselves. After all of the
students are dome writing their pieces and publishing them, I will have them read some of their classmate’s
papers and give them constructive feedback. This will allow the students an opportunity to interact with each
other and also read other classmates papers.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Classroom Laptops or a classroom visit to the computer lab

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors’ outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students are collaborating with their peers by reading some of their published work and then
providing feedback.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The students are taking their original writing pieces,
editing them, and then publishing them all on their own.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will be providing constructive feedback to some of their classmates
which will involve higher order thinking. They can compare their own life to whatever the student’s
narrative is about, or they can just tell them why they liked their paper.

d. Students’ publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: I will use
the writing piece they have published to grade and put into their report cards for opinion piece writing.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

When we publish students work, we have to make sure that we are abiding by all of the safety and
privacy laws that we have. All of the different school distracts have their own policies and procedures for
publishing students work. I am going to send home release forms at the beginning of the year to assure they
each have approval on posting their work to the KidPub website. I will also assure the parents that our class
will be the only ones having access to make comments on the post. The students will enjoy not only creating
their own narratives about their life, but also reading and commenting on their classmates posts.

Reflective Practice:

This will be just the start of my students using KidPub. At the end of the year, they will post another piece
reflecting on what they enjoyed most about their 2nd grade school year that I will be printing and sending
home with the students to their parents. The students will have plenty of practice for this since we have
already published one of their pieces before. This site will give students the opportunity to be apart of
monthly writing contests, prizes, discussion forums, and information/support on how to publish that they
