regularly checking, testing, cleaning the devices and backing up the data.

Thus, you can take proper measures to avoid faults.

3 Maintenance
Items and
Operations

3.1 Dustproof Maintenance of the Device

3.1.1 Context

The fan modules are part of a device. The fan modules help in heat dissipation and ventilation of the entire system.

During the running of a device, the fans and the Fan Control Board (FCB) of the fan modules absorb dust. When a lot
of dust is accumulated, the stable running of the fan modules is affected and the dust becomes the pollution source of
the chassis, which poses a latent hazard to stable system running.

To ensure the long-term stability of a device, it is recommended to remove dust from each fan module once a year as
follows:

3.1.2 Procedure
1. Remove dust from a spare fan module.

Remove dust from the fans and the FCB of a spare fan module with the clean gauze, antistatic soft brush, or the
vacuum cleaner.

2. Replace the fan module to be cleaned with the spare one.

For detailed operations, refer to the" EquipmentParts Replacement ".

-5-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN
950BMulti-service Access Equipment

CAUTION:

Maintainers must spend no more than five minutes to replace a fan frame. Otherwise, the security and stability
of the device is severely affected.

3. Remove dust from the replaced fan module.

Remove dust from the fans and the FCB of the replaced fan module with the clean gauze, antistatic soft brush,
or the vacuum cleaner. The fan module cleaned is used as a spare one.

3.2 Removing Dust from Boards

3.2.1 Context

DANGER:
 Use antistatic measures in the whole process. For example, you have to operate at an antistatic table and wear
antistatic clothes and wrist straps.
 Choose the qualified detergent; otherwise, the board will be damaged.

CAUTION:

Removing boards may significantly affect the running of services. Therefore, you should remove dust from boards
during a period when the service traffic is light, for example, between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m.

During the running of a device, dust accumulates on the boards due to cross ventilation in the process of heat
dissipation. The lower the air cleanliness and relative humidity are, the higher the accumulation of dust is. The worse
the air cleanness is and the lower the relative humidity is, the more dust is absorbed. When a certain amount of dust is
accumulated, it affects the heat dissipation and the electric insulation of boards. It thus threatens the stable running of
the device.

You are recommended to clean dust for all boards once in every two years.

The steps are described as follows.

3.2.2 Procedure
1. Prepare spare boards.

To clean dust for all boards, you need to prepare a spare board for each board.

2. Replace boards.

Replace a board with the spare board first. You cannot remove dust from the board until the spare one is in
position and runs normally.

-6-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN
950BMulti-service Access Equipment

3. Remove dust.

You can carry out dust cleaning in many ways. Two ways for dust cleaning are as follows.

 With vacuum cleaner

Brush dust from board surface with a clean and dry antistatic soft brush and align the dust intake of a
vacuum cleaner with the brush. In this case, dust is absorbed immediately when it is brushed off.

This method features simple operation and low cost. It is hard to remove the dust that is absorbed on
board surface such as harmful gas.

 With detergent

Use dedicated anhydrous, erosion-free, non-conductive and highly volatile detergent such as Isopropyl
Alcohol (IPA) to remove dust from boards.

This method helps to remove dust completely, even those harmful gases that are adsorbed on board
surface. It, however, features complicated operation and high cost.

4. Reuse boards.

Due to the amount limit of spare boards, it is not possible to replace all the boards with spare boards
simultaneously.

You can repeatedly use the cleaned board to replace other boards the types of which are the same for secure
maintenance.

3.3 Removing Dust from Optical Interfaces and Connectors

3.3.1 Context

After a device has run for a period of time, you need to remove dust from optical interfaces on boards and connectors
of fibers.

CAUTION:

3.3.2 Protection Against Laser

DANGER:

The optical interface emits laser, which may cause injuries to eyes.

WARNING:
-7-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN
950BMulti-service Access Equipment

Do not use unqualified cleaning tools or materials. This may damage the optical connectors and interfaces.

When performing an operation on optical connectors, wearing infrared filter glasses is recommended so that your eyes
can be protected from being hurt. If you do not wear such glasses, do not look directly into the optical connector of an
optical interface.

3.3.3 Capping Optical Interfaces and Connectors

Cover the unused optical interfaces on boards and connectors of fibers with dust caps. After you remove the fiber from
an optical interface, cover dust caps on the interface and the connector of the fiber.

This helps to:

 Protect eyes from being hurt by laser.

 Prevent dust from being accumulated on optical interfaces and connectors.

Do as follows to clean optical interfaces and connectors:

3.3.4 Procedure
1. Clean the optical interfaces and connectors with dedicated tools and materials.

The tools and materials can be purchased from fiber suppliers.

For large-power optical interfaces and connectors, you must use special tools and materials to clean them.

For small-power optical interfaces and connectors, you can use clean, dry antistatic brushes, if dedicated tools
and materials are unavailable.

3.3.5 Loopback Test on Optical Interfaces

Add an optical attenuator when conducting a loopback test on an optical interface when the transmission distance is
more than 40km. In this manner, the optical module can be protected from being overloaded and damaged due to high
optical power that is received.

3.4 Backing Up the Configuration File

3.4.1 Context

A configuration file can be backed up using the following methods:

3.4.2 Procedure
 Directly Copying the File

-8-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN

card memory of the ATN equipment.

3.6 Checking the Grounding System

To maintain the grounding system, check the following:

 The electrical contact between the metallic parts and the cabinet body. The metallic parts and the cabinet
body must be well contacted. The contact points such as screw holes, guide lanes, and lifting ears must not be
painted. Otherwise, bad electrical contact may occur.

 The grounding terminals at the front and back doors and the side doors. These terminals must be well
connected with the grounding wires.

 The grounding buses of combined neighboring cabinets. If cabinets are combined, the neighboring cabinets
must be connected by a grounding bus.

 The yellow and green protecting grounding cables. One end of a grounding cable should connect the PGND
grounding bus of the power distribution cabinet in the equipment room, and the other end connects the
grounding terminal of the cabinet. The screws that fix the grounding cable should not be loose.

-11-

3.7 Measuring the Grounding Resistance

NOTE:

The grounding resistance of a comprehensive communication building should be no more than 1 Ω; that of a common
communication station, no more than 5 Ω; that of the place with high earth resistibility, no more than 10 Ω.

To measure the grounding resistance, use an earth resistance tester. Figure 1 shows the arrangement of the probes of an
earth resistance tester.
Figure 1 Arrangement of probes of an earth resistance tester

NOTE:

 Position the current probe and the voltage probe in a manner that is perpendicular to the wires of a grounding
net or underground metallic pipes.

 Do not measure the grounding resistance right after a rain.

 If the distance between the current probe and the rim of the grounding net is d1 and the length of the maximum
diagonal line of the grounding net is D: d1 is normally four to five times as much as D.

 If the distance between the probe and the side of the grounding net is d2, then d2 is 50% to 60% of d1.

 In measurement, move the voltage probe along the line connecting the grounding net and the current probe for
three times; each movement is about 5% of d1. If the three resistance values are similar, it means that the
grounding resistance is normal.

NOTE:

If you feel difficult to measure d1, you can take 2D instead of d1, D instead of d2, in a place where the earth resistibility
is uniform. In a place where the resistibility is not uniform, you can take 3D instead of d1, 1.7D instead of d2 as the data.

This section describes replacement of the chassis in terms of impact on system, precautions, tools, and operation
procedure.

4.1 Basic Operation Process

This section describes the basic operation process of replacing parts.

 Context

CAUTION:

 When you take a board from a place with low temperature to a place with high temperature, there is
condensation on the board. In this case, if you power on the board, the board is short-circuited. Therefore, you need
to place the board in the new place for a period of time and remove the condensation on the board.
 Before replacing boards or other parts, obtain the telephone number of the local office. Therefore, you can
contact the local office as soon as possible when an exception occurs during operations, or a problem that you
cannot locate or solve occurs.
 Huawei engineers need to obtain the telephone number of the GTAC so as to contact Huawei headquarters as
soon as possible when an exception occurs during operations, or a problem that Huawei engineers cannot locate or
solve occurs.

To ensure that the ATN 950B provides uninterrupted communication services for users in networks, parts of a device are
replaced mostly when the power is on. Therefore, to ensure safe operation of a device and to minimize the impact of parts
replacement on services, maintenance personnel must strictly abide by the basic operation process regulated in the
manual, as shown in Figure 1.

-14-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN
950BMulti-service Access Equipment

Figure 1 Basic operation process of replacing parts

 Procedure

1. Assess the feasibility of the operation.

During the process of troubleshooting or repairing a device, maintenance personnel must assess whether the
operation is feasible before replacing a certain part.

a. Whether the needed spare parts are available in the depot.

b. Whether the maintenance personnel is qualified for carrying out the operation. Parts replacement can
be carried out only by maintenance personnel who are professionally trained. That is, maintenance
personnel must familiarize themselves with the functions of each part of theATN 950B know the basic
operation process of parts replacement, and master the basic skills of parts replacement.

c. Whether the risks of the operation can be controlled. Parts replacement is risky to a certain extent.
Hence, improper operation may cause abnormal running of the device, service interruption, or injuries to
the personnel. Therefore, before replacing parts, maintenance personnel must comprehensively evaluate
the risks of the operation, that is, whether the risks can be controlled through certain measures if the
system remains active. Maintenance personnel can replace the parts only when the risks can be controlled.
Otherwise, contact a Huawei local office for timely technical support.

-15-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN
950BMulti-service Access Equipment

2. Prepare tools and spare parts.

After determining that the operation is feasible, maintenance personnel need to prepare tools and spare parts.

a. Prepare spare parts.

b. The common tools include the multimeter, cable tester, ESD wrist strap, Phillips screwdriver, flathead
screwdriver, sharp-nose pliers, cutter, and pliers.

3. Take protective measures.

Although parts replacement is risky, in most cases, however, maintenance personnel can prevent the risks by
taking protective measures. For example, before replacing a master board, maintenance personnel can switch
services on the master board to the slave board. After the slave board runs properly, maintenance personnel can
replace the master board. In this manner, interruption of services is prevented.

Therefore, to ensure safe operation of a device and to minimize the impact of parts replacement on services,
maintenance personnel must take related protective measures.

4. Replace parts.

After checking that the protective measures are available, maintenance personnel can carry out parts replacement
according to the regulations specified in the manual, such as removing and inserting a board and setting the Dual
In-Line Package (DIP) switch of a board.

5. Verify the functions of the new parts.

After completing parts replacement, maintenance personnel must verify the functions of the new parts through
the testing methods described in the manual. The operation is considered as successful only when the new parts
are proved to be running normally. Otherwise, contact a Huawei local office for timely technical support.

6. Return and repair the faulty parts.

If a part that is replaced is confirmed to be faulty, maintenance personnel should fill in the Faulty Card for Repair,
and send the card and the faulty part to a Huawei local office for timely maintenance.

4.2 Replacing CXPA/CXPB with the 1+1 Protection

This section takes the CXPA for example and describes how to replace a CXPA/CXPB with 1+1 protection and the
precautions that must be taken during the replacement.

 Impact on System

If 1+1 protection for CXPAs works properly, replacing a CXPA will not affect services.

 Precautions

When replacing a CXPA, ensure that the following requirements are met:

 When the device is running, only the standby CXPA can be replaced.

 If the active CXPA has to be replaced, first perform an active/standby switchover on the CXPAs so that the
active CXPA becomes standby.

-16-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN
950BMulti-service Access Equipment

 For ATN 950B, slots 7 and 8 house the CXPAs. The slot numbers do not indicate which one is active and
which one is standby.

 The software package and configuration file on the new CXPA must have the same version as those on the
CXPA to be replaced.

 Tool

 ESD wrist strap or ESD glove

 Phillips screwdriver

 ESD bag

 Procedure

1. Wear the ESD wrist strap, and insert the grounding end into the ESD jack on the device, or wear the ESD
gloves.

2. Check alarms to see whether the CF card on the CXPA to be replaced is working properly. If the CF card is
working properly, remove the CF card and install it on the new CXPA. For operation details, see Replacing CF
Cards.

NOTE:

 You can check alarms either using the NMS or running the display alarm all command in the user
view.

 For ATN 950B, if the active CXPA's CF card is working inappropriately when you replace the
standby CXPA, ensure that active and new CXPA's CF cards store the same contents.

 In other cases, the CF card can plug-and-play.

3. Check the version information of the software package in use.

Run the display version command to check the version information about the software package in use.

4. Save the configuration file in use.

Run the save command to save the configuration file and then run the compare configuration command to
check whether the in-use configuration file and saved configuration file are the same.

5. Prepare a new CXPA and verify that the board connector does not have bent pins. Copy the software package
and configuration file to the CF card's root directory on the new CXPA.

NOTE:

 The files that must be copied (backup files) include the software package (.cc file), configuration file
(.zip or .cfg file), bcf.txt file, and patch file (.pat file).
 Run the display startup command to check the file names. A patch file is optional. If no patch has
been installed, there is no patch file for backup.

6. Determine the position of the CXPA to be replaced.

-17-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN
950BMulti-service Access Equipment

Before removing the CXPA to be replaced, confirm the CXPA's position information, indicating the specific
cabinet, chassis, and slot.

An ATN 950B can house two CXPAs in slots 7 and 8.

Find the CXPA to be replaced and attach a label with a replacement indication on its front panel.

7. Determine the active/standby role of the CXPA to be replaced.

a. Run the display device command to check whether the CXPA to be replaced is standby. If it is standby,
proceed to step 8.

b. If the CXPA to be replaced is active, run the slave switchover command to perform an active/standby
switchover.

c. Run the display device command again to check the slot number for the active CXPA and verify the
switchover.

CAUTION:

For ATN 950B, if the active CXPA has to be replaced but the standby CXPA is not working properly,
troubleshoot the standby CXPA and then proceed to the replacement.

8. Remove cables connected to the CXPA and attach labels onto these cables.

9. Remove the CXPA from the chassis.

CAUTION:

 During the operation, pull out the board slowly and smoothly to prevent it from colliding with the
neighboring boards and from interrupting other running boards.
 When removing a board, do not touch the parts on it to avoid damages to the board.

b. Properly wear an ESD wrist strap and insert the ground end to the ESD jack on the cabinet.

c. Untighten the captive screws anticlockwise with a Phillips screwdriver.

d. Hold the CXPA's ejector levers with both hands and rotate them to the open position with proper
force. When the ejector levers and front panel form a 45-degree angle, the CXPA will be disconnected
from the backplane.

e. Hold the CXPA's ejector levers and pull the CXPA out of the slot along the guide rails. When the
CXPA is half out, hold the lower side of the CXPA and steadily remove the other half.

f. Put the removed CXPA in an ESD bag.

10. Insert the new CXPA into the chassis.

CAUTION:

 During the operation, insert the board slowly and smoothly to prevent it from colliding with the
neighboring boards and from interrupting other running boards.
-18-
Maintenance and Fault Management Manual for ATN

 When removing a board, do not touch the parts on it to avoid damages to the board.

b. Take out the new CXPA from the ESD bag.

c. Hold the ejector levers on the CXPA with both hands, and also hold the lower side. Steadily and
slowly push the CXPA into the slot along the guide. When the CXPA's positioning pin contacts the
chassis's positioning holes, stop pushing the CXPA.

d. Rotate the ejector levers to the closed position (the positioning bolts will be in the positioning holes).

e. Tighten the captive screws clockwise using a Phillips screwdriver to fix the board.

11. Check the running status of the new CXPA.
