Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Universal Design for Learning principles are addressed in the lesson because it allows students to show
understanding by answering different types of questions. The Socrative assessment includes multiple choice
and fill in the blank/short answer questions. Students can log on and take the assessment online, or it can be
printed out on paper so that students can write their answers. Socrative gives students immediate feedback
so they are able to see what they are successful with and what they still need to work on. The teacher can use
these results for future planning to ensure student success. Socrative is also extremely an engaging and
interactive website.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to the Students Response Tools activity, students will have been introduced to telling time in hours and
half-hours. They will know that the short hand represents the hour and the long hand represents the minutes.
The SRT activity will be introduced to students after they are familiar with telling time. It will be given to
students as a formative assessment before moving onto the next standard. They will log onto their computers
or tablets and be instructed to answer each question.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will log onto Socrative using a computer or tablet. During the assessment, they will work on
answering each question individually. The teacher will walk around and monitor students as they are taking
their assessment, as well as observe the real-time data that is being displayed to them.

The only material students will need to complete the activity is a computer or tablet, unless they are taken a
written version of the test, where they will need a pencil. Students should be able to complete the
assessment in about 20-25 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Yes, each question will be pre-selected with the correct answers so that students can self-assess and see if
and why their answer was incorrect. This will be done so that students can see where they made a mistake
and how to fix it.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

If the class was successful with the SRT activity they will move onto the next standard.

If the class was not successful, the teacher will review the data and scores and use them to re-evaluate how
the lesson originally taught to the class. The teacher will create a different lesson on that teaches the topic in
a different way.

How will the data be used?

Student data will from this activity be collected and saved. The teacher will use this data to see how students
compare to the rest of the class and see where they need improvement. This data will also help the teacher
self-assess their teaching and differentiate a new lesson if the data proves the first one was not successful.
The data from this particular assessment will also be used as a quiz or test grade. Each student’s data will be
saved individually to help track student progress and success.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal goal for this activity is that my students are successful with telling time and using Socrative as a
form of assessment. I also hope that students learn how to self-assess their work by using the live feedback
that Socrative provides for them. I hope that I will learn if my teaching of the activity is successful and also
hope to better learn and become more familiar with Socrative.

Reflective Practice:

I think this activity impacts student learning because it provides students with instant feedback that they can
self-assess and correct with. This activity was designed to be a summative post assessment but could also be
used as a pre-assessment to check for understanding before teaching the standard. Using it as a pre-
assessment provides the teacher with information about what the students know and need to know,
therefore, they can focus more time on teaching unknown content. Socrative can also be used as a formative
assessment in the middle of the lesson to check for student understanding.
