Introduction

Internship is critical for Business students. Internship is really a practical experience


or teaching for students in which they know about the knowledge of Specific
organization in which they are doing their internship. The background of my study the
purpose, scope, objective, methodology and the organization in which I did my
internship is like this. In my internship I expand knowledge about the MCB where I
did my internship. I am very thankful to Manager; Mr. Taimoor Butt who giving me
a learning surroundings in the branch.
Internship is basically a training session or gaining experience in an organization to
learning and collecting the special information from doing the actual work in that
organization. I did my internship in MCB and increase the knowledge about what they
do in the branch. I actually love to join the banking sector after my BBA that’s why I
chose MCB for my internship to gain the knowledge of bank. The competition is very
high so this is the right period in which I can gain and learn about that bank. That
information is making me very beneficial after the degree of BBA hons. Its
competition all around so it’s the time to know about the knowledge of a company
because it can prove beneficial for me after my graduation. I was work in many
departments in MCB and acquire the information about what type of activities were
performed there. That kind of activities is also polish internal skills in my personality.

OVERVIEW OF THE MCB

Before the separation of India Pakistan the requirement of more Muslims bank was
incorporated. Muslims wants to more invest this sector and also they have the
authentic financial background. The idea smooth’s the path for building up MCB

Detail History

MCB bank was recognized according the companies Act 1913 on 9th July, 1947 in
Calcutta initially. Because of changing conditions of the state the certificate of
incorporation was made on 17th August, 1948 for the waiting of certificate was issued
in Chittagong. The bank first main office was recognized in Dacca. And Mr.
G.M.Adamjee was appointed as a first chairman. This was established with the
amount of Fifteen million.

After the establishment the main office was transferred to Karachi on August 23rd,
1956. Now the main office transferred to Islamabad in July 1999 through a special
law. Also changed the name is principle office.

After that the bank was nationalized on January 1st, 1974. Also have a long network
of branches in which 506 and the deposit balance is Rs. 1640 million. MCB is
familiar in the public as a conservative bank but we also know that nationalism also
leave some affects. MCB was privatized at the end of year 1991 with the total
branches of 1287 and deposit cash value is 35029 million.

Today MCB bank has been established with the passage of time, knowledge and
experience. An important financial organization, in period and quantity, it represents a
fully rising, authentic gaining organization.

Bank has some important rules and regulations and nobody try to break these rules. A
bank employee dressing is just normal. Mostly male employees are in formal
dressing. The building of this branch is newly constructed look like to maintain his
work. The customer of this branch are mostly satisfied but some rare are not.
Customers are the happy with the performance of the employees work. The daily
activities are performed on time. But in case of any holiday some work are pending
but the staff complete the pending work in a week. The budget of the bank is very low
but the branch members are utilizing these resources very efficiently. The staff of the
bank is very cooperative.

ACCOUNT OPENING DEPARTMENT
In the very first week of the internship I was worked in the department of account
opening and the job activity of the department is opened the account and closed. The
accounts are many types’ individual, organizations, corporations, associations and
charitable organization and other more.
Basics to open an account
Initially when I was starting the internship I learned about the account opening
process which types of documents needed for open an account. I also learned about
the documents how to fill and what type of information needed by bank for opening
the account. And also how to provide detail information of account opening to the
customers. Further information are the following.
Introduction and preliminary investigation
Firstly bank investigates and takes the introduction from customer and see the person
is attractive for MCB. Like the other bank of Pakistan required that necessary
information. After that takes information about the customer occupation or business.
Than customers should be must introduce themself. Mistake of any kind in this
process of taking information become the reason of any penalty. Not only the banker
but also the other general public whose are affected. The federal ombudsman of
Pakistan made many rules for complaints of the customer. Also require the photo
copy along with National ID card for open the account. After the check of ID
originality then return to the customer.
Preliminary investigation is necessary because of the following reasons:

 Avoid frauds: I learned if the banker will not take the following information
that is given and the undeserved person gets the cheque book for wrong
purpose. Then the banker feels guilty that he was giving permission to that
person for using wrongly to open an account.
 Safeguard against unintended overdrafts: many of time some mistake
occurs due to not specified the account over draft. Like the amount of a
account is more than its original amount. Also like credit entries made the
other account than that person bank balance will decrease.
 Inquiries about clients: MCB bank provides the necessary information about
the customer’s financial condition of the customer. The bank gives only the
idea about the customer and other bank take decision upon that information.
Specimen signature
The account is opened than MCB clients offer a form of the signs as a sample. That
signature express on all the cheques required when the cash withdraw from the bank
and give permission for payment. This signature take on the special card that card is
called specimen signature. And mention the customer full name account number and
also the date. At the time of payment if the signature did not matched than the cheque
return and write the signature differ on cheque. And in case of signature is fake than
the banker has no liability of his loss because he received the permission of the
payment.
How to open an account (General)
The following points are very important at the time of opening the accounts.
 New accountholder must introduce himself as a bank new client.
 Banker must take the signs on the account opening form and also confirmed
that signature.
 Bank required a copy of ID card.
 After that bank recorded and accept the customer form and introduced him as
a account holder. Also bank have the right to refuse to open the account
without any reason.
 Every account is assigning some digits for the communication of the
transaction of the banks.
 The initially amount is required to open an account are given Rs. 1000.
 The bank can change the minimum balance rate in the account anytime.

I observed According to my observation in MCB, when a customer wants to open an
account; the bank officer gives him an application form. The data which is very
necessity to know by the bank are written on the account opening form. And also need
some important document that is support the written points must attach with the form.

Sole proprietor’s account
If the customer wants to open the account of business that is fall in sole proprietor

In case of individual account that is may be private or joint MCB require the
computerized national identity card.

Joint stock company


When customer wants to open the joint stock company account MCB must require the
certificate to submit the license copy and the other following documents should be
require.

the company. That document contains the rules and regulation of the
company.
 Licensed original copy of the resolution of the board of directors. In this
certificate include all the management structure.

 Licensed original copy of the certificate of incorporation or registration. Its
mean the company is legally registered.
 Require the original copy of certificate of the commencement of business in
public limited case.

Issuance of cheque book


After the opening of account of the customer bank giving the cheque book for
withdraw and deposit of the cash in his account. Basically give the authority to the
account holder to operate the account. The first cheque book gives the account holder
after all necessary requirements are completed. Cheque book can be ten; twenty, fifty
and hundred pages it’s upon to the account holder apply for what. Cheque book also
keep with demand slip for the issuance of the new cheque book. The slip fill and
signature require on the slip. Also confirm the signature of the account holder. And
record the cheque book serial no. also requires the address of the account holder with.
Mostly one cheque book is requiring for operating the account but in joint stock or
partnership account need a number of cheques book. Than bank provide all the
account holder cheque book.

Second week

FOREIGN EXCHANGE DEPARTMENT


Second week of my internship I was shifted another department of foreign exchange
department. This department my instructor name is Mr. Jawad. He is very kind and
cooperative. He gives me very important information about the foreign exchange
department. He is giving me the overview of the foreign exchange currency accounts
which I was explain in previous foreign exchange department. In this department the
thing is very important I learnt how foreign companies send money in our country and
the people whose relatives live in foreign country can received the money.

The foreign companies that send money are following

 Ria
 Money express

 MCB made the foreign payments to those people who have the pin codes.

 And that pin codes lies between 9 to 16 digits. That digits are in numeric form
and some of these are companies whose pin codes along with alphabets

 Also ask the information about the transaction to the customer. Like how
many amount or etc.

 MCB bank required the NIADRA identity card for the payment of foreign
remittance.

 Than the information code in computer and give the instruction to the
computer to print out that transaction.

 Also open the foreign currency account if the customer is willing to open the
account.

 The two ID card copies and ask about the profession of that person and ask
which type of account you want to open. That information is must require to
open the account.

 These activities also performed under the CSO department.

Third week

MANAGEMENT OF CASH
The third week of my internship is spent in cash department. Mr. Farhan is my
supervisor in this cash department. In this department I observe this is the most
important department of the bank. The person that mange that department must
remain very active responsible and also risk taker. This department has another name
that is container department and the managing person of that department is called cash
manger or the chest manger. In many branches those are not independently branch
manager performs the duties of the cash manger. The surplus cash is maintained in the
main branch. And main branch send the cash to other branches on daily bases. The
main branch is also bound from the limited cash maintain from state bank of Pakistan
instruction. Even the main branch has the surplus cash amount than in case the branch
manager will be responsible. New notes and prize bounds also include the activities of
the cash manger. The keys of the cash locker keep three people and cash manger keep
the money after counting of cash. The cash manger also keeps the records on daily

bases in the book of account or data base in computer. After the satisfaction of the
cash manager also verify the stamp and signature made the cash payment. MCB cash
department are very important worked effectively.
UTILITY BILLS COLLECTION
After that I was transferred in the collection of utility bills department. MCB collect
the bill as the behalf of the WAPDA, Sui Gas Companies and Pakistan
Telecommunication putt the stamp and also signature of the banker also mention the
date in which customer pay the bill. After the transaction complete banker must
record that activity on the bills scroll form. After that a part of bill is return to the
customer and the other part copy keep the bank and the original copy send to the bill
department. Bank also received the charges of that service providing.
Fourth week
HOW TO HONOUR A CHEQUE
I observed in MCB during my period of internship cheques are received for the
following purpose.
 For the payment of cash.
 For transfer of money from one bank to another.
 For the purpose of clearance.
For cash Payments
At the time of payment bank must checked the following information.
1) The date on which sign the cheque.
2) Sign of the drawer.
3) Sign of the payee.
4) Check bearer cancelled or not.
5) Check the payee account has this bank or not.
6) Check the sign of the drawer if four to five situation exit.
7) Amount of cheque and the figure both match.
After all the above activities are performed then comes to token.
1) Token number
2) Cheque number
3) Cash Amount written on the cheque.

The very first step is all the cheques are recorded in day book with the numbers and
serial numbers. After that a Performa filled bank on who was drawn cheque number,
amount, should be mentioned. After that cheque is attached with this Performa.

Fifth week
CLEARING
I spent my fifth week of internship in clearing department. The cheques which need
cleared are passing through the following procedure.
Following information is recorded in the clearance book.
a) The person who receive benefit name should be mentioned.
b) Also mentioned the name of the bank.
c) Also mentioned the branch name.
d) Cheque number mention.
e) Also mention the amount given.
When the clearance is sent this transaction should be record in the books. Also
mention the future date and day. Cheque and slip are separately treated and cheque
sent for clearance. Clearing slips of credit are recorded in clearing documents. These
credit transactions should be debited when the cash received from the other branches.
The following receipts are stated.
1. The clearing sent is less than from the clearing received it’s called credit
receipt.
2. The amount of clearing received is less than the clearing sent than debit
voucher is called.

During my two weeks of last and second last the supervisor gives me the instructions
about the advances department. He told me if you want to reach on success you must
have the knowledge about the advances. Also know about the major important
departments of the banking sector. Then I observe in the banking the most interesting
department is advances. And bank also offers the opportunity to work in that
department.
MCB follow the procedure for providing the loan. Customers apply for the loan and
give application to the manger and manger takes the necessary information about the
customer. Bank sent that necessary information along with the property document to
the legal advisor of the bank. That legal person gives their response to the bank after
seeing that documents. Branch manager and the advancing department manger
discussed that information and take decision to grant the loan or not. The both manger
are willing to grant loan than they sent the application with the request letter and
documents to the regional office. When regional manager decided to grant the loan
than made the letter that is signed by the regional officer. Also send this letter to the
manager of the branch. Finance manager receive that letter and made a DAC
(Disbursement Authorization Certificate). Also give the loan of that person who has
the bank account
The following records is made for loan.
 The clients apply for the loan.
 Take the services of the lawyer to know the information.
 Regional office gives the letter of approval.
 Vetting License.
 The Evaluation of any expertise accepted by the state bank of Pakistan.
 The made of new title deed.
 Confirmation statement.
 Made the order to give the authority of decision to the other party. Power of
attorney transfer.
 Mortgage deed contains the certain information about the loan.
 Alteration document prepared.

I also learn about the important documents that’s required for financing. The
important point is that cash is providing on the base of security. When provide the

Due to this MCB include in the list of highly automated banks of Pakistan.
 Strict advances policy
Due to strict policies very less amount of advances and debts turn into bad debts. So
this is strength of the MCB.

WEAKNESSES
Weaknesses are divided into following;
 Lack of advertisement
Mostly people are not known about the bank products. Because of no proper
advertised their product.
 Behavioral differences about customers
Make different behavior with rich customer give more importance. And while the
other hand just provide the services to a normal person who have no good reputation.
The employees of the MCB have double standards.
 Inefficient HR policies
In the bank has no job rotation just stick on one place have no idea about any other
field or department.
 Mismanagement of time
Have no proper timing of launch also some branches closing time is 5:00 pm while
the other some in 5:30 pm closing timing.

MCB has fewer employees so the burden of employees will be increase. This is
another drawback.
 Promotions are not timely
The sick system sticks at one place. Not change their ranks so no motivation.

Opportunities for MCB are:

MCB is the first private bank who received many awards in previous history so the
MCB bank has good reputation in the market. Also can made investment to capture
the opportunities for gaining more profits.

 Emphasizes on information technology


MCB should made development in information technology. Focus on the IT specially
E banking can improve their progress.
 Branch network
MCB can expand their branches in the market. The state bank of Pakistan gives
lenient licensing policy for open new branches.
 Marketing
MCB can made and improve their marketing strategies. Due to this the sales of the
bank would be increase. Also the share price in market automatically increased.
 New products and schemes
New products can introduce because the opportunities exist in the market.
THREATS
MCB has the following threats:
 Government policies
Government rules and regulation another threats for MCB. One policy changed but
the affect is too large.
 Increased competition in banking market
The competition of the banking sector is increased day to day. So the threat is that a
new entrant can take his place due to high competition.
 Unstable economic situation

Summary of Learning
The primary mission of the MCB employee’s foundation is to teach the all member
and other with the new technology. MCB regularly teach or provide the experience
about the latest technology. Bank gives its staff IT program for enhance their abilities
and skills. I also learn about the skills and gain experience during the period of my
internship.
The student of UOG I have the option and opportunity for utilizing my skills and
knowledge. Internship is the initial stage in which we enhance and used our skills
practically. Before start the internship this statement is non-concerning for me.
I also learned and performed the following activities in MCB.

Skills and qualifications I have gained from the internship

There are many abilities and knowledge in my self-achieved from the internship I will
discussed these skills and qualification in detail.
First of all my speaking expertise is very improved because in bank I met different
people from different areas the culture and beliefs standard of all the person are not
same that’s why I got this chance and met with these people I know that how can we
met with different people in different conditions and how can we handle these
condition with our mind.
In my period of internship there are many other internees are also working in bank.
Our manager gives task to us and we can complete these tasks with teamwork of all
other internees in this way I can learn that how we can work with teams and groups
how we can help with each other if anyone have problem with his work.

With the help of the internship I got realistic experience, because it is said that the
person who got lots of education and degrees be unsuccessful to impress his employer
if he have no practical experience in past.
I know the computer software very well which is used in MCB in future if I am
engaging banking sector. I should be familiar with these software and gain command
on it very soon.
Responsibilities that I have undertaken during my internship period
There are many responsibilities undertaken by me these can be conferred in detail
Firstly when I am working in remittance the main duty arise to me that I note correct
amount which can be received by client from abroad if mistake occur the balance
between payments and receipts can never be equal.
When I am working in recording of transaction the most concentration can be given to
this area because bank operations can be note a single rupee if one rupee can be
missing from balance then clearing work cannot be accomplished and all clearing
staff can be hold in bank.
Other responsibilities of mine are to make sure the customer signature when the
payment is made on cheque, if signature cannot be corresponding then no payment
can be made to that customer, that’s why signature can be matched with proof is very
necessary.
When people got loan from bank and pay interest on it, then there was also the date of
payment back the amount of credit to bank. This time the bank gives written notices
to them who got loan from bank and not pay back. In this time my responsibility is
that I can write notices to him and send these notices to their mailing addresses.
Different challaan forms are given to bank for payment of different types of amount at
the closing time of bank these challaan forms are given to me for recording of
transaction into document with amount and name of person who deposit it.
Internship will affect my career plan
Yes the experience which I am gaining from MCB will affect my job plan. because I
gain many skills and experience how to tackle many accounts at a time, also know
how to send money to another account of the accountholder. What are the charges are
deduct annually. How give loan to the customer and what type of investigation made
before giving the loan. Securities and guaranties are necessary from them I know what
type of guaranty is required for what amount and duration of loan granted.

I also work in clearing section of bank in which the balances of all the accounts are
check daily if any discrepancy arises the balance can be check very soon and give
report to manager.
I work in remittance department in which local money is granted against foreign
currency when a client came to bank with foreign currency the bank will give local
currency after deducted commission.
In near future I got job in bank then there is no complexity for me to work at bank
because I well alert from almost all the operations in bank and I got command in all
operations of bank in very short time and become successful officer.
If I want to get job in any bank after completion of my education I hope I will never
be discarded because I have lots of experience for all departments in bank and I know
what problem can be resolve from where, what techniques can be apply to it for
solving it.
Internship activities are correlated with classroom knowledge
Yes classroom information is very cooperative for me during the whole period of
internship. In classroom when we got assignment from teacher we can be arrange this
assignment with the help of our group members this procedure is repeated in bank
when my supervisor assigned task to me I can complete this task with help of other
internees.
The statement of the bank is just like the subject that we study in BBA financial
accounting and financial statement. These courses giving me help to understand the
bank statements. Now I have a lot of knowledge about the financial statement. I think
I can face all type of problems about that area.
The time I was write notices to that person who obtained loan from bank but not
returned back I write these notices in English in this stage our course “Business
communication” is giving me a lot help because in this subject we wrote many kinds
of business letters to different person who not return money.
The case in which customer did not return the amount of loan in that situation the
course of business law helpful how to deal with that customers legally. Because in
this course we studied about the law of business. What kind of punishment gives to
the customer?

The financial statement and also the report shows the performance of the MCB is
increasing day by day. The earning of MCB has increasing previous some years and
also this trend continuously exists in future. So we find that MCB has very successful
in the coming future period. In the future the shareholder gain more profit so the
shareholder invested more. Time to time I think if bank follow the following
instructions the bank would be in a situation of improvement, expansion and
development. I think the performance of the bank will be positive if the customer
supporting the bank. If the customers fully cooperate with the bank the results should
be double goods. Also that situation is exchully good, determined and motivated for
the bank. In that situation bank can compete all the competitors of within the country
also outside the country.

RECOMMENDATIONS
 MCB should give the more bounces to the employees for the motivation of the
employees. Give more benefits to decrease the issues between the upper and lower
officers. Due to this the working progress would be improve.
 Our system is that where the employees have a lot of conflict with other
employees so the officers should communicate to the top management. If that
communication made than the top management take some steps for the purpose of
removing these conflicts. Recruitments should be strictly on merit basis and
induction should be after proper and extensive training.
 The staff should change time to time because new staff is very responsible toward
their duties.
 Also increase the international branches to capture that market for earn of high
profit.
 Must follow the rules and regulation of the modern banking system. Made the
possible this rule implementation it would be positive response.
 The customer product and services should be upgrade.
 To meet the international demand bank should be follow the global baking
system.
 Bank should pay attention on the staff training. Also changed the staff with skilled
staff. The special amount spent for the training and recruitment of the employees.

 Many of the employees remain in the same rank most of the time I thing
organization should be rotate their jobs for more gaining and learning. Also added
the promotions.
 Each year many of the members of the bank go to another branch and other are
come here for gaining the experience and skills in any place. The purpose of the
teaching employees is given the advance studies in their profession. Also gives the
time to attend the lectures and training session for the improvement of their skill
and knowledge.
 Every year the salaries are becoming low this is bad impact on employee
performance so we should remove this drawback through made some policies
related this problem.
 MCB bank has no proper timing of launch also delay their activities so bank
should made those policies that are removed that problems.
