Sales Guidebook
Inverter
The FR-A800 series is now released
-Introduction-

Thank you for your continued support in sales promotion of Mitsubishi Electric products.
Since the production start in 1981, Mitsubishi general-purpose inverters have been at the industry’s highest level
in quality in the market. Especially since 2005, when the 700 series was released, Mitsubishi has successfully
maintained its top market share in Japan. Mitsubishi inverters are now used in various applications, such as
conveyors, textile machinery, fans, and pumps.
In such a situation, the market recently requires safety, ease of use, system support, environmental adaptability,
and intercompatibility as well as, of course, improved functions and performance. Additionally, the
globally-integrated model is strongly demanded. To respond such requirements and demands, Mitsubishi has
developed a new series, FR-A800 series, as a new flagship model for the first time in 8 years.
Other manufacturers are also releasing new products, and the competition is getting more intense. With the
FR-A800 series, with concepts of "Unparalleled Performance" and "Uncompromising Quality", Mitsubishi aims to
achieve further increase in the market share and promote sales in such a competitive market environment.
Please promote the sales aggressively to achieve the No. 1 share not only in Japan, but also in the world.

Line control
Line control is necessary for the machining of elongated products such
as paper, thread, wires, all kinds of sheet, and tape. This will respond
rapidly to changes in line speed and suppress the occurrences of
winding unevenness. This contributes to a steady supply of high-quality
products.

Terminal response adjustment function
The response of the input/output terminals of the FR-A800 series is improved compared to the FR-A700 series. The
response timing may differ depending on the application. In such a case, the terminal response can be equivalent to
that of the FR-A700 series by setting Pr.289 Inverter output terminal filter and Pr.699 Input terminal filter.
Adjust Pr.289 and Pr.699 according to the system with a guide of 5 to 8 ms.

What is the speed control range, 1:200?

The speed control range indicates how low the speed can be under speed control.
For 1:200, 0.3 Hz to 60 Hz

What is the speed response, 50 Hz?

The speed response indicates how fast the inverter follows the change in the speed command. (The larger value
indicates the better speed trackability.)
For 50 Hz: Response time (T) = 1000  1 / (2    50) ≈ 3.18 [ms]

5
What is torque control?
The motor controls generated torque (current). In torque control, torque (current) against a torque command is
controlled. When the load torque is small, the speed automatically increases, and when it is large, the speed
decreases. When the torque equals the torque command, the speed is maintained. This control method is typically
used for winding/unwinding.

What is the torque control range, 1:20?

The torque control range is a ratio between the rated torque and the minimum torque with which torque control can
be performed with the specified torque control accuracy.
When the rated torque is supposed as 100%, the torque control range 1:20 indicates that torque control is
available with up to 5% of the rated torque.

Difference between the absolute torque accuracy and the repetitive torque accuracy
Both indicate the accuracy when the rated torque is supposed as 100%.
Absolute torque accuracy: Difference between the actual torque and the torque command
Repetitive torque accuracy: Fluctuation between the average of the actual torque and the actual measured torque

Terminal response
The terminal response indicates the time from when a signal is input to when the inverter recognizes the input or
from when the conditions for signal output are satisfied to when the signal is actually output.

Communication response
The terminal response indicates the time from when a communication signal is input to when the inverter
recognizes the input or from when the conditions for signal output are satisfied to when the signal is actually output.

Machine tool
Cutting-edge machine tools are harder and thinner than ever before to
be applicable to diverse new materials. High-speed rotation is required
more than ever before in order to be applicable for fine and precise
cutting on hard and difficult-to-grind materials.

7
Reason for the upper limit of the output frequency, 590 Hz
The export control order about frequency changers has been reviewed and is scheduled to be revised by the end of
fiscal 2013 with the following two changes:
1) The article "Frequency changers with output distortion ratio less than 10%" is eliminated, and
2) The condition of "exceeding 600 hertz and less than 2,000 hertz" is changed to "equal to or exceeding 600 hertz
and less than 2,000 hertz".
Further, since the output frequency may become higher than the command frequency depending on the control
method, the upper limit of 590 Hz was determined.

The inverter supporting high frequency exceeding 590 Hz will be prepared as a dedicated model.

PM sensorless vector control
What is a permanent magnet (PM) motor?
A PM motor is a synchronous motor with strong permanent magnets
embedded in its rotor.
Easy maintenance for sensor (encoder)-less motor
• No additional cables means less wiring space required.
• Improved reliability is obtained in unfavorable operating environments.
(e.g. high vibration)
• PM motors are usually smaller and
lighter than induction motors.

01 LEADING DRIVE PERFORMANCE

(4) For accurate and stable transport between machines
PM sensorless vector control
What is PM sensorless vector control?
The speed and magnetic pole positions, the two essential bits of
information to control a PM motor, are detected without a sensor (encoder)
The speed detection internally-performed in an inverter enables highly
accurate control of a PM motor, almost as accurate as an AC servo
system, without the need of a sensor (encoder). *3
Combining with Mitsubishi MM-CF
series IPM motors facilitates aspects
of high-level control with no encoder
such as
"simple positioning*4" and
"zero speed torque".
*3: Speed fluctuation ratio: 0.05% digital input)
*4: Positioning accuracy (with no load) of 1.5K and
lower: 1.8º, 2K or higher: 3.6º

Simple positioning and zero speed torque

In combination with the IPM motor MM-CF series, "simple positioning", "zero speed torque", and "servo lock" are
available.
Simple positioning is performed on the assumption of 4096 pulses/motor shaft rotation.
Positioning accuracy (with no load) 1.5K and lower: 1.8º, 2K or higher: 3.6º
Specifically, if a pulse of position 0 to 4095 is commanded, the accuracy is about 20 pulses.
10
01 LEADING DRIVE PERFORMANCE
(5) Taking motor performance to the max
Induction motors and magnet motors can be combined freely
The cutting-edge auto tuning function
The PM motor auto tuning function, which has been newly developed,
enables operation of other manufacturers' permanent magnet (PM) motors.
Operation with all Mitsubishi induction motors and PM motors, in addition
to induction motors and PM motors from other manufacturers*5, is possible.
That means you need less motors for spare and stocks.
(With IPM motors other than MM-CF and PM motors manufactured by other companies,
simple positioning control or zero speed torque cannot be used even if tuned.)
*5: Tuning may not be available depending on its motor characteristics.
Low speed, high torque realized with SF-PR motor
By combining with Mitsubishi's
high-performance, energy-saving
motor SF-PR, 100% continuous
operation is possible from a low
speed of 0.3 Hz for inverters of any
capacity.
(when using Real sensorless vector control)

When the MM-CF series is used

The general-purpose motor driving setting can be switched to IPM driving setting by only one setting (only by setting
the parameter [IPM] to "3003" (MM-CF)).
* When the MM-EFS series is used, tuning is required. (The S-PM series motors (GV-S, GV-SSY, and GV-SHY)
cannot be tuned.)

(2) Reliable and secure maintenance
Standard 24 VDC power supply for the control circuit
With the existing control power supply to R1 and S1 (AC), 24 VDC input is
equipped as standard.
The 24 VDC power supplied from outside can be fed to the control circuit
locally, enabling the parameter settings, communication operation and
safety maintenance without turning ON the main power.

Prevention of trouble with temperature monitoring

The inverter is equipped with an internal temperature sensor, which outputs
a signal when the surrounding air temperature is high.
This facilitates the detection of rises in temperature inside the inverter
following cooling fan malfunction, or rises in surrounding air temperature
due to inverter operating conditions.

For 24 VDC control power input, connect the 24 V external power supply having the following specifications across
the terminals +24 and SD.

Input current 1.4 A or higher

15
02 SECURITY & SAFETY
(3) Quick reaction to troubles
Easy fault diagnosis
The operating status (output frequency, etc.) immediately before the
protection function activates can be stored in the inverter built-in RAM
with the trace function. Stored data (trace data) can be copied to a USB
memory device, facilitating easy trouble analysis at a separate location
by reading into FR Configurator2.
Trace data stored in the built-in RAM is deleted
when the power is turned OFF or the inverter is reset.

Clock setting is now available in addition to the already-available cumulative

energization time. The time and date at a protective function activation are
easily identified. (The clock is reset at power-OFF.) The date and time are
also saved with the trace data, making the fault analysis easier.
By using the real-time clock function with the optional FR-LU08 (when using
battery), the time is not reset even when the power supply is turned OFF.

 Trace data or clock data of the clock function stored in the built-in RAM is deleted when the power is turned OFF or
the inverter is reset.
The data can be held with any of the following conditions.
• Separating the control power supply using the terminal R1 or S1 or the 24 V external power supply
• Keeping the control circuit energized
• Setting Pr.30 Regenerative function selection to any of "100 to 102, 110, 111, 120, and 121 (no reset when
power is supplied to the main circuit)".
(However, the main circuit power supply is turned ON during while the protective function of the inverter is
being activated, inverter reset is performed.)

* For the real-time clock function, refer to page 29.

(3) To aid with maintenance
Reduced wiring check time

Split-type covers are adapted for all capacity models.

Maintenance is now easy because all an operator has
to do is to remove the cover for the target wiring area.

A serial number is stored as an

inverter identification number.
Administration of different inverters
via communication or using the
FR-LU08 or FR Configurator2 has
become much more simple.

ECO-FRIENDLY FACTORIES
The power consumption by motors is said to amount about the half of
all power consumption made by the Japanese manufacturing industry.
Factories can save more energy without dropping their production.
Less energy and more production-the FR-A800 series will help you to
get the both.

(1) Energy-saving function tailored to system, application

Variety of functions
Check the energy saving effect at a glance
• You can check the energy saving effect on the energy saving monitor.
• The measured output power amount can be output in pulses.
Reduce power consumption during standby
• Control circuits other than those for power-related parts can be operated
with 24 VDC power supplied from an external power source.
Since the control circuit can use the external 24 VDC, other power
control circuits can stay OFF while no driving is required, and that saves
the standby energy.
• By turning the cooling fan ON/OFF based on the inverter status,
wasteful power consumption during stoppages can be reduced.

04 ECO-FRIENDLY FACTORIES
(1) Energy-saving function tailored to system, application
Variety of functions
Save energy with Optimum excitation control
The excitation current is constantly adjusted to drive the motor in the
most efficient method which leads to energy saving.
For example, with Optimum excitation control with motor load torque of
10%, motor efficiency has increased by approximately 15% over the
previous V/F control method.
Effective use of regenerative energy (option)
Multiple inverters can be connected to the FR-CV/FR-HC2 via a common
PN bus.
Regenerative power is used at other inverters, and surplus energy is
returned to the power supply, resulting in energy saving.
The 315K or higher models are inverter-converter separated types, which
are suitable for power regeneration. A842
The converter, not used
in a power regenerative M
system, is separated
(315K or higher).

Power regeneration

26
04 ECO-FRIENDLY FACTORIES
(2) PM motor contributes to the energy saving in factories
PM motor
If the inverter is being used for an application requiring constant-torque,
such as a conveyor, factory energy savings can be achieved by replacing
your current induction motors with permanent magnet motors (PM motors).
(Tuning is required for an IPM motor other than MM-CF, and for the PM motors of other
manufacturers. Please contact your sales representative.)
Why is a PM motor so efficient?
• The current does not flow to the rotor
(secondary side), so there is no secondary
copper loss.
• Magnetic flux is generated by permanent
magnets, so less current is required to drive a
motor.

(1) Various network compatibility

brings all the control in your hand
Compatibility to various open networks
 A controller can control and monitor an inverter via networks. RS-485
communication (Mitsubishi inverter protocol, Modbus-RTU protocol), which
is supported as standard, conveys data up to 115.2 kbps.
 A function block (FB) programming for
CC-Link communication is available for the
MELSEC-Q/L series. Inverter control
sequence programs can be created easily.
 Communication options are also available for the major network protocols
such as CC-Link and SSCNET III/H as well as DeviceNetTM, PROFIBUS-
DPV0, and LONWORKS. Other Ethernet networks are also supported.
CC-Link IE Field, FL-net remote I/O (to be released soon) etc.

Maximum RS-485 communication speed

A700: 38.4 kbps
A800: 115.2 kbps

What is the function block (FB)?

A function block is a group of ladder blocks that are repeatedly used in sequence programs so that using it
repeatedly can be easy.
This facilitates program development, reduces errors in programs, and improves the quality of programs.
FBs for CC-Link are compatible with both the MELSEQ-Q and L series and can be used in GX Works2.

05 SYSTEM SUPPORT
(2) Selection of optimum capacity to suit the application
Multi-rating
Rated current and four different overload capacity ratings (SLD rating
(super light load), LD rating (light load), ND rating (normal load), HD rating
(heavy load)) can be selected with parameters. The optimum inverter can
be selected to suit the application, and by selecting an inverter with SLD or
LD rating, equipment size can be reduced. The HD rating is best suited for
applications requiring low speed and high torque.
If using an inverter with capacity of 75K or higher, or motor with capacity of 75 kW or higher,
always select and install the inverter based on the capacity of the motor with DC reactor.

With the FR-A800 series, the suitable rating can be selected from four types according to the load rating. (The ND
rating (initial value) is equivalent to the A700 series.) In an application where the load is stable and overload does not
occur or where the surrounding air temperature of the inverter is 40ºC or lower, the motor having larger capacity
(rated current) by one rank can be driven. This contributes to downsizing of the enclosure and cost reduction.
For the 18.5K or higher, setting HD improves the permissible load compared to ND, and this improvement will be
larger for the higher-capacity model.

For example, for FR-A820-7.5K(00490)

(3) Wire saving, space saving
Built-in brake transistor
In addition to the 22K and lower, 400 V class 30 to 55K models have also
been equipped with a built-in brake transistor. In an application where the
motor is hardly decelerated, connecting a brake resistor can shorten the
deceleration time. Wiring, space, and ultimately the cost will be all saved.

 Inverter control such as inverter operations triggered by input signals,
signal output based on inverter operation status, and monitor output can
be freely customized based on the machine specifications.
 All machines can be controlled by the inverter alone, and control can
also be dispersed.
 Time-based operation is possible by using in combination with the real-
