Low-cost companies

Dear students, professors, and colleagues. Thank you for giving me the opportunity
to make this conference here at the University of Edinburgh, the city where our
company was founded. It is an honor for me to be here.

First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Gareth Williams and I am the
co-founder and CEO of Skyscanner Ltd, one of the world’s largest travel search
engines. We are an independent company, founded in 2003 in Edinburgh, with
offices in countries like USA, Spain, China and of course the UK. We count with over
32 million visits a month and 11 million app installs and growing up. Our products are
available in over 30 languages and 70 currencies.

So, let me explain you in a very easy way how we work: our partners have agreed to
give Skyscanner a commission for every reservation made through our site or for
every visit that the partner’s website receives. And because most of our partners are
low-cost airlines, today I am here to tell you a little bit more about them.

In general terms, the airlines were the first in the sector of the “low cost”
phenomenon in the economy, but now we can find this kind of companies in every
sector. All of them guided by one only goal: to keep and increase their users.

I am sure each one of us in this room has already tried the services of one of the
biggest low-cost airlines, like Ryanair, and I am sure you understood why the flight
was so cheap. These kind of companies are focused on saving from everywhere.
For example, they have a very big restriction on the luggage and their policies are
changing all the time. The last change announced on 15th of January this year was
that you can take on board only one small bag that must not exceed the
35x20x20cm. For the other one, up to 10kg, you will have to pay a 50€ extra charge,
unless you book the Priority boarding. Another thing as a low-cost service is that
their seats are not foldable, the staff is mainly beginner and on low wages and you
have to pay for everything you would like to consume on board (food, water, etc.)
But, is what you have paid for, right?

However, let’s focus on the main pro of these airlines, and that is the price of the
flight. For every person that travels a lot, and mainly for the students, is the best way
to travel around. People who choose low-cost airlines are ready to give up on some
basic services or luxuries in order to get the most economical price. So that is why
these young low-cost companies are so fast-growing and have become the kings of
the cheap flights. And this is the main reason we work with them.
Nevertheless, nowadays, the low-cost carrier has been growing up and we can find it
in every industry: textile companies like Primark or H&M, furniture companies like
Ikea, mobile phone companies like GiffGaff and Lebara mobile, international
supermarket chains like Lidl or Tesco or car rental companies like Goldcar or
Easycar. Economically reviewed, all of them are based on offering very low levels of
cost and, at the same time, very competitive. Their products are very basic but
functional and with almost same quality as the traditional ones. Furthermore, another
pro is that these kind of companies are generating a lot of job opportunities. But
their low-cost strategy is much more than that and in this time of crisis, low-cost has
become a trendy.

So, to conclude, I would like you to take into account the importance of the low-cost
companies in our global economy and who knows… maybe some of you have
already an idea for the next successful low cost business.

Thank you very much for your attention.
