ITEC 7410: SIP Plan/Technology Plan Analysis

Name: Cara Humphries Semester: Summer, 2018

Type your answers below (ie. minimum of 2-5 sentences per question as appropriate).

School Improvement Plan Analysis:

 What is your school’s mission/vision?

The mission statement of RRLA is to develop today’s achievers into
tomorrow’s leaders using the 7 habits, best practices, and technology in
every classroom for every student.
 What are the targeted areas for improvement (ex. fourth-grade math, improved
LA scores for ESOL population, etc.) and the specific goals related to this
improvement area that are set forth in the SIP (ex. % gain in CRCT scores)?
These are the targeted areas for improvement for 2018-2019: Standards Based
Classroom (Teacher/Student Commentary, Word Walls, Interactive Notebooks,
Leadership Notebooks, Board Configuration, Writer’s Workshop, Student-Led
Conferences, Concept Mapping), Universal use of Leader in Me by all
stakeholders throughout the school and community, Implementation of PBIS.
The SIP addresses an instructional goal and a climate goal for the needs above.
Instructional Goal: By May 2019, 100% of teachers will utilize concept mapping
and teacher/peer collaboration in their teaching and classroom practices with
85% successful implementation.
Climate Goal: By May 2019, 100% of the faculty and staff will utilize a fully
developed discipline process with 85% successful implementation.
 How does your SIP address the needs of diverse populations regarding digital
technology equity for low SES and gender groups (ie. females) and assistive
technology for disabled learners? If it does not, what are your recommendations?
Reese Road Leadership Academy, a Title I school, addresses the needs of all
populations by allowing parents to check out laptops to use at home. There are
two computer labs, at least 5 computers in every classroom, and all classes have
the opportunity to use the computer lab at least once per week. The district
provides assistive technology as needed for students with disabilities. For
example a student who requires voice-to-text assistive technology as a testing
accommodation as stated in his IEP, is provided the necessary equipment from
district personnel.
 How is technology included in the SIP? In what ways is student technology literacy
included as a goal in your SIP? If it is not, what are your recommendations?
There isn’t a specific goal related to technology literacy, but there are strategies
related to literacy that could include technology. My recommendations for
technology literacy should include collaboration among students using Google
Apps. Our district recently assigned Google accounts to all students and I
believe that our school should take advantage of this. Some strategies that are
stated in the current SIP include using concept mapping and implementing
writer’s workshop with all students to improve literacy. These strategies could
be implemented using Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sites.
 Why is technology addressed (or not addressed!) as it is? [Additional Field
Experience option if interviewing others in the school to find this history.]
Technology isn’t addressed in the current SIP. Although, it does state that all
teachers must utilize online programs such as Classdojo and/or Remind to
communicate with parents.
 Are you pleased with the current treatment of technology-related issues in the
SIP? Why or why not?
In order to further our students’ technological skills, we must go deeper with
technology implementation in the classroom. The action steps that are stated
within the plan include: Teacher/Student Commentary Word Walls, Interactive
Notebooks, Leadership Notebooks, Board Configuration, Writer’s Workshop,
Student-Led Conferences, and Concept Mapping. Although these steps are best
practices, they are not encouraging the development of 21 st century skills.
 Would you like to see technology issues represented differently in future SIPs?
Why?
Yes, because students are not getting the exposure required to be successful in
the 21st Century. The skills and critical thinking needs to start as early as
elementary school.
 What are your first thoughts of how technology could contribute toward achieving
the mission/vision/goals set forth in your school improvement plan?
The mission statement states that we will build leaders using best practices and
technology, but we are not doing this to the best of our ability throughout the
school. Allowing students to use Web 2.0 tools to collaborate with peers and
teachers on writing projects, will be a more efficient way to implement the
writing process. With the use of other online tools and software, students will
be more engaged and less likely to misbehave.
 How might technology be integrated more effectively into your SIP in the future?
I would recommend the following changes to the Instructional SIP goal:
Instructional Goal: By May 2019, 100% of teachers will utilize concept mapping
and teacher/peer collaboration in their teaching and classroom practices using
Google Apps with 85% successful implementation.

District Technology Plan Analysis:

(Note: Most districts do have a plan. Contact district-level personnel for a copy if
needed.)

 What are the three main curriculum goals in your district’s technology plan?
1. Teachers collaborate to make instructional decisions based on a diverse
data set, including student and teacher observations and reflections,
student work, formative and summative assessment results, and data from
analytics embedded within learning activities and software aided by real-
time availability of data visualizations, such as information dashboards.
2. In Future Ready schools, leaders ensure the availability of ongoing, job-
embedded, and relevant professional learning designed and led by
teachers with support from other experts. Clear outcomes for professional
learning are developed and align with a vision for student learning.

3. Embed an understanding of technology-enabled education within the roles

and responsibilities of education leaders at all levels and set visions for
technology in learning.
 What strategies are outlined for achieving these goals?

-Plan for, budget, purchase, and begin installing a network infrastructure that will support 1-
to-1 in each school.
-Pilot and select the devices for students and teachers that are robust yet affordable for a 1-
to-1 implementation.
-Determine the implementation model and select the pilot school/grades and teachers.
-Extend the Technology Advisory Committee to include community members and students in
addition to principals, teachers, and technology support that will meet regularly to discuss the
health and future of technology in our schools.
-Administer Levels of Teaching Innovation (LoTi) Digital Age Survey to all Teachers and Leaders
-Using the data from the LoTi Assessment, begin building professional learning modules for
teachers and leaders.
 Does the plan seem achievable over the designated timeline? Why?
This plan is designed to take place over a 3-year span. It seems achievable because
some of the action steps listed above have already taken place.
 In what ways would you like to see the plan improved?
I noticed that the plan is geared towards a 1-to-1 model for every classroom, but it
doesn’t state how and what type of instruction would take place once we get all of
these devices. Teachers need to understand how to implement instruction using Web
2.0 tools.
 What could you, in your current or a future position, do to help support implementation
of the plan?
I am going to be our school’s media specialist this coming school year, and I plan to be
a resource to teachers. I am hoping to do some workshops on using Web 2.0 tools in
the classroom. If I can get teachers excited about using these tools in the classroom,
they are more likely to use them. I want to build the knowledge of how to use Literacy
and technology together.
 How does the plan address the needs of diverse populations regarding digital technology
equity for low SES and gender groups (ie. females) and assistive technology for disabled
learners? If it does not, what are your recommendations?
Assessments can be aligned to UDL and adjusted to meet the needs of all
learners i.e.; increased font size, text to speech options, bilingual
dictionaries, glossaries and more.
 In what ways does the plan tie-in to your local SIP?
The District Technology Plan correlates with our school’s mission statement because it
states that teachers will implement technology and best practices for all students. Our
SIP includes the use of technology for the use of our required reading and math
programs, but doesn’t include anything outside of that such as the use of Web 2.0
tools.

School Tech Plan Status: N/A

(Note: Most schools will not have a tech plan. In this case students can only answer
question one and maybe elaborate on why there is no plan and if there ever was a
history of tech planning at that school at all.)
 Is there a technology plan that is separate from the SIP at your school? If so, when
and how was it created?
 Do members of the school community know about the tech plan?
 Is it being implemented effectively? Why or why not?
 What strategies could be implemented to help accelerate adoption of the plan?
