Power

When you purchase an automobile you are interested in the horse power of an engine, you know
that an engine with high horse power is most effective in accelerating an automobile

Definition

Power “P” measures the rate at which work is being done. Its defining equation is P=work done/time
taken or in symbol P=W/t. when work is measured in joules and time in seconds the unit for power is
the joule/second, which is called the Watt, after the Scottish inverter James watt inverted the
engine. For motors and engines, power is usually measured in horsepower were 1 horsepower is 746
watts.

Of Couse, since the watt is the S.I unit for power we must use it in our equations. For example, an
electric motor that has an output of ¼ hp is capable of producing 186 watts of power. That means
that the motor can perform 186 joules of work each second. Note: power= work/time:Fs*s/t
therefore power is also force * velocity since s/t is velocity

If power is measured in kilowatts and time in hours then the work done by the source of the power
has the units of kilowatts*hour and this unit of work is called the kilowatt hour. Kwh it can be
related to the joule through. Convert kWh to Joules

If an object can do work we say that it possess energy, for that reason, energy is often say to be the
ability to do work. The concept of energy is too complex to be described fully in such a brief
statement, associating energy and work still proves useful. Ther are many types of energy, our
begins with kinetic energy

A moving baseball can break a window, a moving hammer can drive a nail and a stone moving
upwards can actually lift itself against the force of gravity, obviously, moving objects Have the abilty
to do work in other words they possess energy. The energy possessed by an object because of its
motion is called kinetic (K.E) we can now derive an equation for kinetic energy relating work and
motion
