Lesson Idea Name: Fun with Cells

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 5th
Content Standard Addressed:
S5L3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the parts
of plant and animal cells.
b. Develop a model to identify and label parts of a plant cell (membrane, wall, cytoplasm,
nucleus, chloroplasts) and of an animal cell (membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus).

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Universal Design for Learning can be used to extend and support the learning experiences for all students.
In this lesson, students are working with the web-based application, Quizlet. This application is great for
English Language Learners, because the study sets can be translated into numerous languages. Students with
hearing disabilities can also benefit from using this assessment tool, because it allows users to listen to the
terms and definitions.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to the SRT activity, students will watch a BrainPop video on cells to introduce them to the topic and
activate prior knowledge. We will then discuss as a class the parts of a cell and what makes a plant cell
different from an animal cell. I will then provide a short overview of Quizlet, so students can navigate the
website on their own during the SRT activity.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Once students have learned about parts of a cell and are given a short overview of Quizlet, they will then use
either computers or tablets to go on Quizlet to work on the formative assessment at the own pace. This
activity will last around 15-20 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will provide correct responses to the class after the SRT activity because it will allow me to cover the
questions students may have struggled with during the activity. This will also give me an idea of who needs
more support on the topic.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, I will go over each question to provide clarification on questions that may have been
missed. I will also allow students to ask questions to ensure that each student understands the content the
questions covered.

How will the data be used?

The data I will collect will be the PDF results of the activity. This activity will be taken as a participation grade
because I am mainly using it as a formative assessment to differentiate further instruction for students. The
results will show me the areas students need more support in.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Spring 2018_SJB
Student Response and Assessment Tools
My personal learning goal for this activity is to learn what type of questions work best for my students. I also
want to see if this type of activity is effective and engaging for my students. I want to provide lessons and
activities that are engaging so students can learn content in a way that motivates them.

Reflective Practice:

After designing this lesson idea, I feel as though using SRT activities such as Quizlet allow students to interact
more with technology and engage them in learning. To further enhance this project, students can use the
Quizlet study sets in different ways for studying.
