TUNNING OF THERMAL SYSTEM

(DIGITAL THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF HOT PLATE METHOD )

FEATURES :
1. Design concept of apparatus according to Indian Standard (IS : 3346-1966). The
dimenstions are not exact as per standard.
2. Six thermocouple for measurement of temperatures on either sides of specimen and guard
Heater.
3. Complete panelised electrical controls and measurement.

DESCRIPTION :
Thermal Conductivity Apparatus is designed to detemine Thermal Conductivities of
Insulating materials in the form of slabs. The Apparatus consists of main Central heater.
Sandwitched beteween the specimens. Cooling plates are provided on the either side of the

specimen. Two identical specimens are clamped between heater and cooling plate. Ring
guard heater ensures undirectional heat flow through specimen.
Specification

1) Central Heater - suitable capacity, with 100 mm dia. Sansandwitheched between two
copper plates
2) Ring Guard Heater - of suitable capacity, with 37mm width sandwitched between two
copper plates
3) Cooling chamber with water circulation arrangement.
4) Speciment -6 to 20 mm thick, 180 dia.
5) Glass wool bag insulation around the set-up
6) A Control Panel comprising of -
a) Voltmeter - 100/200 v
b) Ammeter - 0 - 2 A
c) Dimmerstats for central & guard heater 0-240 V 2 A - one
d) Digital Temperature indicator 0-2000c with 0.10C least count using chromel
alumel thermocouples, provided with cold junction compensation
EXPERIMENTATION

1) Determination of Thermal conductivity of insulating Material in the form of slab.

2) Study of variation of Thermal Conductivity of the material with temperature
3) Comparison of Thermal conductivities of various insulating Materials
SERVICE REQUIRED
1) 230 V. A.C. stabilised supply with earthing connection.
2) Cooling water supply at the rate of 10 to 15 lit/min
3) Space area 0.5m x 1.5m at working height. A Technical manual accompanies the
apparatus which describers the equipment and procedure to conduct the test.
