Air supplies life to the world. Air lets our living planet breathe.

Air contains oxygen, which

is essential for life. All living things respire by breathing in air. The air humans inhale is oxygen
and on the other hand, humans exhale is carbon dioxide. Moving air, called wind, has great force.
It enables the movement of sailboats and gliders. It runs windmills, which are used to generate
electricity. Wind also helps in the dispersal of seeds. With the presence of unrestricted air humans
have, air pollution takes place.

Air pollution refers to the condition in which the existence of toxic substances in the
atmosphere, generated by various human activities and natural phenomena such as volcanic
eruptions, results in damaging effects on the welfare of human beings and the living environment
(Omasa 2002). Additionally, air pollution is further divided into primary and secondary pollutants.
Primary pollutants are released directly into the atmosphere from a source, where secondary
pollutants occur because of complex chemical reactions taking place from two pollutants reacting
with each other (Kibble and Harrison 2005).

Furthermore, air pollution can be caused indirectly, when buying goods and services that
use energy in their production and delivery. Most of this air pollution results from the burning of
fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline to produce electricity and power our
vehicles. Short-term exposure to air pollution can cause and aggravate many respiratory
conditions, including asthma, bronchitis and some severe lung diseases.

In addition to that, air pollution is mostly cause by humans. It is mostly due to the lack of
discipline, overpopulation and industrialization.

Lack of discipline among humans is somehow innate. Humans tend to abuse things which
are free. Humans also tend to not be contented on the things they have. Without discipline,
humans may cause air pollution without their consciousness.

Else, overpopulation is another main cause of air pollution. More people is proportional to
more waste it produces, more energy and foods they need, space to live and work on, and creates
more pollution. Space is sacrificed, forests that can provide oxygen depleted.

And finally, Industrialization is a global phenomenon that creates air pollution. Along with
the jobs and opportunities that comes with industrialization is the harm that it creates to the
environment.
In the Philippines, especially in Metro Manila, air pollution is at its alarming level. Metro
Manila is one of the most polluted metropolitan cities in the whole world. The Metro Manila
pollution is caused by two things. First and foremost is the exhaust from motor vehicles. Second,
the exhaust from factories and even first-class hotels in Metro Manila. Motorists still use leaded
gasoline which has been banned in advanced countries and it is a very common sight to see cars
and trucks that are obviously violating the anti-pollution laws. There are also factories that spew
out not only thick black smoke, that contains chemicals that may affect the health of persons
living in that area. Smog in Metro Manila is also very abundant nowadays.

In Batangas City, Philippines, The Department of Environment and Natural Resources

(DENR) chief has expressed alarm over the pollution caused by coal-fired power plants. Batangas
City’s quality of air becomes fluctuate to polluted because of industrialization and certain means
of production of energy.

Meanwhile, air pollution in Alangilan, Batangas City is very evident. Due to increase of
population, people tend to find more space to live at and the portion for tress, which creates
oxygen started to deplete. In addition to that, the place started to adopt the thought of
Industrialization, wherein restaurants and certain establishments produce smoke which contains
certain substances that may lead to air pollution. Lastly, the place is a road to transport goods
and services from highly urbanized places like Manila going to Batangas and vice-versa, and
motorists tend to still use leaded gasoline which emits black smoke.
