Learning Module Part 4

The Greenhouse Effect
DIRECTIONS:Read the selection carefully. Then answer the questions that follow.

Have you experienced getting inside a closed car that’s been parked in the sun for a few hours? Maybe you perspire so
much because of the heat. The radiant energy of the sun heats the air inside the car, making it much warmer inside than the air
outside. The glass of the car windows keeps much of that heat trapped inside.
Similarly, gases in the atmosphere trap much of the radiant energy from the sun that reaches the
surface of the earth. All the things on earth absorb sun’s energy. These warm objects radiate
heat energy back into space. However, the atmosphere prevents a good part of this heat
from escaping back into space. This process of heat retention by atmospheric gases is
called the GREENHOUSE EFFECT. Without the greenhouse effect, all of the sun’s
energy would be radiated back into the space, and the earth would be too old for living
things to survive and evolve. Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect are called
greenhouse gases and include carbon dioxide.

Human activities release large amounts of carbon dioxide to the

atmosphere every year. Some of these activities include burning gasoline, burning of trees, leaves,
woods and wastes, power plants, burning coals, and burning of forests to clear land. Steadily,
there is an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. AS a result, more heat
energy is trapped by the carbon dioxide and other gases. It could cause the earth to warm. This
warming could change climate worldwide. How rapidly this GLOBAL WARMING might
occur is unknown, but a rise in air temperature of 20C to4 0C over the next 50 years is predicted.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

6. What could be done to decrease the amount of this gas in the atmosphere?

Let’s Read!
DIRECTIONS: Below is a selection about the ozone. Read it carefully to answer the questions that follow.

OZONE: PROTECTOR AND POLLUTANT

High above the earth in the atmosphere part called the
stratosphere, is a relatively little known gas essential to life on earth.
That gas is OZONE. Each molecule of ozone is made up of three atoms
of oxygen. Ozone in the stratosphere absorbs over
99 percent of the ultra violet light that comes
from the sun. It prevents most of the
radiation from reaching the earth.
Ultraviolet rays are often welcomed because they
cause skin to tan. They are sometimes used to sterilize objects because in high
concentration, they kill bacteria. They are also needed for the process of
photosynthesis which helps plants to grow including rice, vegetables, and
fruits – thus giving human beings food to eat. However,
this radiation can also cause sunburn and skin cancer.
Because ozone in the stratosphere is essential to life, reports that a number
of human activities can destroy ozone are understandably alarming. It was
reported in 1989 that the ozone hole was already
the size of the US mainland. Dubbed as the “ozone
hole”, this was brought about by the severe depletion
of the ozone layer by the Ozone Depleting
Substances (ODS) which are man-made chemicals. These are the chlorine
compound, particularly the chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) and the bromine
compounds called halons. In 2000, this hole reached a size of 17.6 million
square kilometres. But in 2002, the Antarctic zone decreased to 9.6 million
square kilometres. It also splits into two separate holes.
Also, Ozone is one of the ingredients of smog. A combination of smoke and fog. This hazy mixture of
gases damages people’s lungs and worsens heart diseases.
