2 PROXEMICS

The study of the symbolic and communicative roles of the spatial separation individuals maintain in various
social and interpersonal situations, and how the nature and degree of this spatial arrangement relates to environmental
and cultural factors.

3.2.1 Personal Space: invisible boundary surrounding tha person’s body into which intruders
may not come.
Acceptable infringement of personal space in lobbies, elevators, subways, fastfood and
other public spaces.

3.2.2Personalization and Personalized Space:


 Staking claim to places
 Manifestation of desire for control and an expression of aesthetic tastes as well as an effort to
make environment fit activity better.
3.3 TERRITORIALITY AND DEFENCE SPACES
3.3.1 Territory : is a delimited space that a person or a group of persons uses and defends as
an exclusive preserve.
3.3.2.1 Ownership of or right to a place. e.g. Land titles, deed of sale
3.3.2.2 Personalization or making of an area. e.g. stores and gates
3.3.2.3 Right to defend against intrusion. e.g. fences
3.3.2.4 Serving of functions ranging from physiological to self-actualization

3.4 THE CONCEPT OF PRIVACY


3.4.1 Definition : The ability of individuals or group of individuals to control their visual,
Auditory, and olfactory interactions with others. The ability to control
Interactions to have options and to achieve the desired level ofinteraction.

3.4.2 Kinds of Privacy :


 Solitude - the state of being free from observation by others.
 Intimacy – the state of being with another person but free from outside world
 Anonymity – the state of being unknown even in a crowd
 Reserve - the state in which a person employs psychological barriers to control unwanted
intrusions.

3.4.3 Purpose of Privacy:


 Personal autonomy
 Release of emotion
 Self evaluation
 Limit and protect communication
