School of Letters, the graduate School of Law, and the graduate School of Economics (Master’s Course).
This institute, as a graduate school with master’s and doctoral degree programs, trains high level-
professionals in the master’s course and through continuous education in two programs of the doctor’s
course fosters creative teachers and researchers with specialized advanced skills.
The master’s degree program has three divisions: the Division of Public Policy and Management,
which trains students to become highly capable professionals who can work for municipal
governments, enterprises or NPO’s; the Division of Social Systems, which conducts research on the
social environment, (i.e. the family, community, etc.) which surrounds individuals; and the Division of
Humanities, where students learn about the environment as it relates to cultural pursuits such as
language, ideas, religion and the arts.
The doctoral degree program has four courses: Human and Cultural Environment Studies course,

5. Characteristics of the Kanazawa City
Ishikawa Prefecture is located in central Japan.
It takes about 3 hours from Tokyo and 2 and
half hours from Osaka. With the peak of Mt.
Hakusan to the south and the Noto peninsula
to the North, Ishikawa is blessed with an
abundance of nature. Kanazawa, the capital of
Ishikawa, is an ancient city sharing historical
and cultural characteristics with Kyoto. With
over 400 years of history, the city is very
popular in Japan for its traditional culture.
Located in the center of the city Kanazawa
castle and Kenroku Park, one of the most
famous Japanese gardens in the country,
together with the traditional atmosphere of the
city, continues to attract tourists from all over
Japan. Kanazawa is also the administrative,
economic, and cultural hub of the region, with
many branch offices of government and private
enterprises.

6. Outline of Kanazawa University

― A Research-Oriented University Open to the

World ―
Kanazawa University has been contributing to the growth of Japanese higher education and
research as a key university of the Hokuriku region since its foundation in 1862.
Kanazawa University aims to be “a research university dedicated to education”, and a number of
world-class research projects are being conducted here.
Some of the major research projects are as follows: an innovative neuro-scientific study to clarify
human psychoneurotic activities; environmental research in the regions of the Japan Sea Rim
involving the observation of yellow sand; creation of novel areas in the life sciences using the atomic
force microscope with the highest measurement speed; treatment for lifestyle-related diseases; an
underwater drilling project for collecting mantle material.
We are also conducting other important projects, such as research into the intangible cultural
heritage of China and Japan for the purpose of its preservation, succession and utilization; research of
quantum critical phenomena in the micro-K temperature range using one of the best adiabatic
nuclear demagnetization cooling apparatus in the world;environmental measurement in the Angkor
ruins in cooperation with the Cambodian government. Kanazawa University is a leading
comprehensive university where scholars in the fields of arts, science and medicine are carrying out a
wide variety of research.
With about 11,000 students, 3,000 teaching and
administration staff, and a collection of 1.76 million
books, the university plays an important role as an East
Asian research base and is constantly raising the bar.
Kanazawa University has international exchange
agreements with more than 100 universities in 22
countries, and has nearly 350 international students
from over 40 (mostly Asian) countries.
Kanazawa University has two main campuses —
Kakuma and Takaramachi-Tsuruma with a total area of
2.66 million square meters. Kakuma, the largest
campus, occupies an area of 2 million square meters,
and as one campus is the third largest in Japan.
The campuses have a ubiquitous environment with
wireless LAN, which enables students to use the
Internet anywhere on campus. Students have their own computers ( international students can
borrow PCs ) and can get individual advice through the network. We have created our original
E-learning materials, which enable effective self-learning on the part of the students. We have also
developed an original portal site to instruct and support students individually.
