DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

BONUS-POINT PROBLEM SET

Directions: (1) Solve the following as systematically as possible. Show your complete solutions.

(2) Draw the necessary diagram. No diagram will only get half of the respective points.

(3) Express your answers in four (4) decimal places.

(4) Highlight your final answers. Unhighlighted final answers will be considered incorrect. No erasures on
the final answers, otherwise, it will be voided. Use light yellow as highlighter.

1. At t = 0, a motorist traveling at 120 kph sees a deer standing in the road 100 m ahead. After
a reaction time of 0.3 second, he applies the brakes and decelerates at a constant rate of 4.5
m/s. If the deer takes 5 seconds from t = 0 to react and leave the road, does the motorist miss
it? Prove your answer using time and displacement.

2. A truck accelerates uniformly in one direction from an initial velocity of 3.5 m/s (point A) to
a final velocity of 9 m/s at point B. This velocity is maintained for 15 seconds to reach point C.
It is then braked uniformly at 0.8 m/s2 to come to rest at point D. If the total displacement
from A to D is 250m, determine (a) the acceleration rate from A to B and (b) the total time
from A to D.

3. Two cars A and B, have a velocity of 70 mph and moving in the same direction. A is 350 ft
behind B when the brake is applied to car B, causing it to decelerate at the constant rate of 12
ft/s2. In what time will A overtake B, and how far will each car have traveled?

4. An engineer is designing the runway for an airport. Of the planes which will use the airport,
the lowest acceleration is likely to be 4 m/s2. The takeoff speed for this plane will be 65 m/s.
Assuming this minimum acceleration, what is the minimum allowed length for the runway?
