DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

PROBLEM SET 4

Directions: (1) Solve the following as systematically as possible. Show your complete solutions.

(2) Draw the necessary free body diagrams. Incomplete FBD will only receive half of its point.

(3) Express your answers in four (4) decimal places.

(4) Highlight your final answers. Unhighlighted final answers will be considered incorrect. No erasures on the final answers,
otherwise, it will be voided. Use light yellow as highlighter.

1. Packages are thrown down an incline at A with a velocity of

1.52 m/s. The packages slide along the surface ABC to a
conveyor belt which moves with a velocity of 3.75 m/s.
Knowing that the kinetic friction between the packages and the
surface ABC is 0.20, calculate the distance d if the packages are
to arrive at C with a velocity of 3.75m/s.

2. A 5-lb block is suspended from a spring which has a spring constant

k = 0.7 lb/in. The spring has a length of Io = 20 in when not stretched.
The block is released from rest at y = 0. Determine a) the speed of the
spring at y = 6 in, and b) the maximum displacement of the block.

3. A train weighing 1200 tons is pulled up a 2% grade at 10 mph. If the train resistance is constant at 12 lb/ton and the
power exerted by the locomotive remains constant, what will be the speed of the train on the level track? What
horsepower does the locomotive develop?

4. Find the velocity of the body A in the figure after it has moved 15 ft from
rest. Assume the pulleys to be weightless and frictionless.
5. Find the value of P that will give the system of blocks shown in the figure a leftward velocity of 25 ft/s. 10 seconds
after starting from rest. The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.20.

6. A towing force of 400 N, acting at an angle of 45o, is applied to a 150-kg crate which is originally at rest on a smooth
horizontal surface. Determine the final velocity and the normal force which the surface exerts on the stone if the towing
force is applied for a time interval of 10 seconds.

7. A ballistic pendulum consists of 1 5-kg sack of sand from a lightweight cord 2 m long. A 0.08-kg bullet strikes the sand
and becomes embedded in the sand. If the maximum angle of swing of the pendulum after the impact is 30o, calculate:
a. the speed of the sack of sand and the bullet immediately after the impact b) the speed of the bullet before the
impact.

8. The balls A and B in the figure are attached to stiff rods of negligible weight. Ball A is released from rest and allowed
to strike B. If the coefficient of restitution is 0.60, determine the angle through which ball B will swing. If the impact lasts
for 0.01 sec, also find the average impact force.
