DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

PROBLEM SET 3

Directions: (1) Solve the following as systematically as possible. Show your complete solutions.

(2) Draw the necessary free body diagrams. Incomplete FBD will only receive half of its point.

(3) Express your answers in four (4) decimal places.

(4) Highlight your final answers. Unhighlighted final answers will be considered incorrect. No erasures on the final answers,
otherwise, it will be voided. Use light yellow as highlighter.

1. A jet plane travels along a vertical parabolic path defined by the equation y = 0.4x2
where x and y are in km. At point A, the jet has a speed of 200 m/s, which is increasing
at the rate of 0.8 m/s2. Calculate:

a. the radius of curvature of the path at A

b. the normal component of acceleration
c. the magnitude of the acceleration

2. A particle moves in a circle in accordance with the equation s = t4 – 8t, where s is the
displacement in feet measured along the circular path and t is in seconds. Two seconds
after starting from rest the total acceleration of the particle is 48 ft/s2. Compute the
values of ax and ay at this instant and sketch how the path curves.

3. A stone has an initial velocity of 200 ft/s up to the right at a slope of 4 to 3. The For Item 1
components of acceleration are constant at ax = -12 ft/s2 and ay = -20 ft/s2. At the top of
the path, compute:

a. the radius of curvature at the top of the path.

b. the tangential component of acceleration
Sketch how the path curves.

4. A shell leaves a mortar with a muzzle velocity of 500 ft/s directed upward at 60o with
the horizontal. Determine the position of the shell and its resultant velocity 20 seconds
after firing. How high will it rise?

5. The volleyball player serves the ball 6 meters from a 3-m high net with the speed of 12
m/s at 28o with the horizontal. If initially, the server holds the ball 1.5 m from the floor For Item 6
and the ceiling is 10-m high, determine whether the ball clears the top of the net
and lands inside a 10x5 m2 baseline.

6. Using the schematic diagram of a Porter governor shown at the right, determine
the rotational speed in rpm about the vertical axis AD at which the weight D begins
to rise if each flyball weighs 16.1 lb and the central weight D is 40 lb.

7. What counterweight W will maintain the Corliss engine governor in the position
shown in Figure 2 at a rotational speed of n = 120rpm. Each flyball weighs 16.1 lb.
Neglect the weight of other links.

8. An airplane banks at an angle of 60o while making a horizontal turn at 650 km/hr. Calculate the force exerted by a 65
kg pilot against the seat.

9. A curve in a race track has a radius of 200 m and a rated speed of 175 km/hr. Knowing that a racing car starts skidding
on the curve when travelling at a speed of 330 km/hr. calculate:
a. the angle of banking
b. the coefficient of static friction between the tires and the track under the given conditions
c. the minimum speed at which the same car could negotiate the curve.
