Lesson Idea Name: Phases of the moon Introduction

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S2E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to develop an
understanding of the patterns of the sun and the moon and the sun’s effect on Earth.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered Learner

Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in
their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Blog ☐ Wiki ☐ Other: Website Creation Tool (list):

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://www.ducksters.com/science/phases_of_the_moon.php

this will also be located on my Blog.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson will address the Universal Design for Learning by providing
different opportunities for students to express what they’ve learned, and by activating their background
knowledge to complete the activity.
Lesson idea implementation: This lesson will be used as an introduction to a future in-class lesson on the
phases of the moon. The students will be informed ahead of time that they need to look at the flipped
classroom posted on the class blog, and to complete the activity before class. For this activity, there will be
posted the website to be used for the activity, and further written and voiced (audio file of my voice)
instructions to use the article to determine the current moon phase. The students will then post in the
comments what phase they think the moon is currently in, and that will be used for class discussion the next
day.
This activity will serve as a basis for the lesson the following day. There will be a class discussion on what
phase the students thought the moon was in the previous night, and further discussion on why the moon has
different phases.

Importance of technology: This activity could be completed in class without technology. However, that
would lower the LoTi and blooms levels, and it would turn out to be a simple homework assignment. By using
technology, the students are responsible for learning the information themselves, and immediately applying it
in real life.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: The only possible issue with this lesson would arise with students
making personal comments on the classroom blog. This could be a safety issue, assuming the students use
their real first and last names to comment. To avoid this, they can work with their parents to determine an
alias to use for classroom blog purposes, so as to keep their privacy.

Reflective Practice: This lesson is meant to be an introduction to the phases of the moon. As a “flipped
classroom” activity, the students will be completing this activity prior to class to up their understanding of the
topic and give them some real world experience with it.
