LEARNING OUTCOMES
This assignment requires you to draw on several areas of study within this module. You are
expected to demonstrate and will be evaluated as follows:
1. Acquisition of skills in the handling and interpretation of documentary evidence for the Project.
2. Greater awareness and appreciation of different perspectives on history and who 'makes history', such
as personal family-tree history, local and community history, 'fan histories' on web-sites, professional
academic history, heritage and commercially marketed history, with some reference to the related
history employability or volunteering potential of these aspects.
3. Ability to apply some of the skills and approaches introduced in the module to the Project brief, in
order to compare and contrast aspects of 'local history' with wider 'global trends' such as
industrialisation, leisure and the 'heritage' industry.
4. Ability to show investigative skills, which may include library and archive searches, arranging and
recording interviews, recording visual material, and personal initiative in arranging to undertake such
project-related research.
A. THE REQUIREMENTS
An individual assignment consists of two components, not more than 2500 words.
The assignment must adhere to standard academic documentation standards:
Usage of appropriate citation and reference according to the Harvard Name
Referencing System in order to avoid plagiarism.
Font type; Times New Roman.
Font size; 12 pts.
Vertical / line spacing; 1.5-line spacing.
Use your own words to convince your understanding in the topic discussed instead of
“cutting and pasting” . The total word count should be 80% derived from your own
ideas in elaborating the detailed discussion.
Referring to www.wikipedia.com or similar sites as a source for your work is not
permitted.
Diagrams, figures, tables etc may be included without word penalty.
A sliding scale of penalties for excess length will be imposed according to the amount by
which the limit has been exceeded.
B. TOPIC
Topic: History of Rise and Fall of Ottoman Empire (1300-1922)
Ottoman Empire which lasted from 1300 to 1922 centred on the region of modern Turkey and
spanned three continents at its greatest territorial extent, covering the area from Hungary in the
north to Aden in the south and from Algeria in the west to the Iranian frontier in the east.
Through its vassal state of the Khanate of the Crimea, Ottoman power also extended into the
Ukraine and southern Russia. Its name derives from its founder, the Turkish Muslim warrior,
Osman, who established the dynasty which ruled over the empire throughout its history.

Students are required to conduct a research on “History of Rise and Fall of Ottoman
Empire (1300-1922)”. This assignment consists of two components: project proposal and
project implementation.

First Class
Above 75% This is work of an exceptional standard. The work demonstratse excellent understanding of the
question and focus on the question throughout. It must demonstrate outstanding research ability,
in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject and relevant literature. The analysis,
interpretation and argument must be sophisticated, supported by extensive sources and
methodologically sound. The language and referencing is error-free.
70-74% This is work of an excellent standard. The work demonstrates excellent understanding of the
question and focuses on the question throughout. It demonstrates excellent research, in-depth
knowledge and understanding of the subject and the relevant literature. The argument is well
constructed and supported by excellent sources. The analysis and interpretation is sophisticated
and shows independence of thought. The language and referencing must be virtually error-free.
Upper Second
65-69% This is work of a very good standard. It demonstrates a good understanding of the question and
focuses on the question throughout. It draws on wide-ranging research, in-depth knowledge and
a thorough understanding of the subject and the relevant literature. The argument is well
constructed and supported by wide-ranging sources which must be correctly referenced. The
work must demonstrate good critical skills with evidence of a strong attempt to interpret and
analyse existing arguments. It must be fluently and accurately written.
60-64% This is work of a good standard. It demonstrates a good understanding of the question and
focuses on the question throughout. It demonstrates a sound and accurate understanding of the
subject and relevant literature. The argument is well constructed, must demonstrate some
analytical ability, and be supported by a good range of sources which are correctly referenced.
The English is fluent and contains few errors.
Lower Second
55-59% This is work of a quite a good standard. It demonstrates a clear understanding of the question and
provides a reasonable and focussed answer. The work demonstrates sound knowledge of the
topic and familiarity beyond the basic reading. It is a well-organized essay with no significant
errors or omissions. Some analytical ability is demonstrated but with only limited critical
evaluation. Clearly written, but possibly with some errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
The work is correctly referenced but with a rather limited bibliography.
50-54% The work demonstrates adequate knowledge of the topic and familiarity with the basic reading. It
demonstrates coherent and competent organization of the material and adequate focus on the
question. Some attempt is made to interpret and analyse existing literature but with very limited
critical evaluation. There is adequate fluency with an acceptable number of spelling, punctuation
and grammatical errors. The work is correctly referenced on the whole but with a limited
bibliography.
Third class
40-49% The work demonstrates some understanding of the question and a basic, though insufficient,
understanding of the topic/literature. The work contains flaws in the argument and material is not
well organized, it offers poor analysis and interpretation, contains some errors or omissions and
uses a limited amount of even basic reading. Language lacks fluency and there are significant
errors of spelling, punctuation or grammar. Referencing is inadequate.
Fail
30-39% The work demonstrates a poor understanding of the question and presents insufficient
understanding of the subject and/or relevant literature. It is disorganized and fragmentary, with
no interpretation or analysis, and little or no familiarity with even essential reading. The work
contains significant errors and/or omissions, has a poor standard of written English and limited
bibliography and/or lack of references.
Below 30% The work demonstrates only a skeletal understanding of the subject with major errors, omissions
and/or misperceptions and no evidence of familiarity with module readings and other materials.
Appropriate writing skills are lacking and there is no bibliography and/or referencing.
